Games that have aged well

Post » Fri Dec 24, 2010 3:54 am

Pretty much any Final Fantasy before FF11. I still play them all to this day.

Chrono Trigger still gets played.

Chrono Cross, not so much.

Diablo 2 still gets played but for some reason it won't let me online. :(

MEGAMAN... of course. All of the initial series and X 1-3. I wish I had Megaman Legends 1 and 2.

Super Mario Bros 3 is just as fantastic today as it was when it released.

I also still play the Zelda games.

So many from the ages gone by are timeless. Today's generation can't really claim the same.

Games like Morrowind, Deus Ex, Half-Life 2, Planescape:Torment. I am happy that a lot of my all time favorites have held up over the years. While some of them are far from graphical powerhouses by today's standards, things like story, atmosphere, and gameplay still hold up. As long as those do it for me, awesome. If not, there are always mods.

In my opinion Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES version), Final Fantasy IV and VI, Lufia II, and SoulBlazer all aged pretty well. I think last time I looked FFVI was still $60 and that is for an SNES game. All of those games still look great even today and the game play of all (to me anyways) is excellent.

I would say Morrowind and as well and with the followings Diablo II, Warcraft III, and Starcraft though the only one of the previous four I mentioned that I play is Morrowind. I was into Diablo II for awhile but not in a long time and the others I just couldn't get into to play more then 10 minutes or so of each.

Games I played and loved during my childhood and which evoke a lot of nostalgia in me.

Yeah funny that those have aged the best.

Classic Doom with a source port that allows modern resolutions.

Also Half-Life with the high-def models.

And NES-era Megaman, so good in fact that Megaman 9 and 10 went back to their style :lmao:

Is that a mod or something?

GTA 3, Vice City and San Andreas. I still play 3 from time to time, it just has this magical quality I can' quite put my finger on.

It is an update that was originally released with Blue Shift, it includes much improved models for some creatures, NPCs and weapons. More detailed info here: http://half-life.wikia.com/wiki/Half-Life_High_Definition_Pack

I think he means the upgraded models bundled with the Blueshift expansion.

Half-Life is one of the few FPSs that has aged well. I was playing it recently and it still feels great. The old Doom games are still as fun now as they were 15 years ago.

I find that 2D games tend to age better than polygon-based games. Alot of the old 8/16 bit side-scrollers are still alot of fun, whereas alot of the 32/64/128 bit era games are practically unplayable now that I've gotten used to more modern gameplay mechanics.

Morrowind
Daggerfall
Doom 1, 2
Duke Nukem 3D
Monkey Island 1-3

Just to name a few.

If you're talking about graphics I'd say any well done cel shaded game. For example Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, people seemed to worry about it's graphics but IMO while Ocarina of Time now looks terrible (not the art style and not the game itself obviously) Wind Waker still looks great :celebration:

I find that Planescape Torment actually looks better right now than it did on release day (where the average gamer had much smaller monitors), because the higher resolutions allow you to see more of that beautiful hand-drawn world at once, it doesn't simply stretch it.

Baldur's Gate 2. It's still one of the best cRPGs out there, and even though it never came with an editor there's lots of mods still being made that expand it's boundaries even further.
