Games that have aged well

What games do you all think have aged well and are still holding up today?

I'm going to go with Diablo 2, Warcraft 3 and Oblivion.

Diablo 2 definitely. Probably Starcraft, as people still play it.

Morrowind, people are still modding that. And it's awesome to boot.

StarCraft
Age of Empires II
Most any Mario Bros game, especially Super Mario World
I'm guessing the original Red and Blue Pokemon games could still hold up since it's the same basics today.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that, though Oblivion is still a fun game to play (if I still had the disc), it can't fit into the "has aged well" group because I don't consider it old enough. I mean, it's just over 5 years old.

Final Fantasy VII, VIII and IX.

I'm not a graphics snob, but I think early 3D games looked hideous (low poly models that were heavily aliased). Even so, the Final Fantasy games have held up thanks largely to pre-rendered backgrounds, good art direction and some of the best visuals to come from the PSone (in VIII and IX's case, at least). Tons of content, stories that are still good by today's (gaming) standards, and turn-based combat is timeless.

Chrono Trigger
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Super Metroid

Just about any 16-bit game could probably make the list since the visual style seems to have risen in popularity in recent years, but those three are a few whose gameplay has aged as gracefully as the graphics.

The original three Crash Bandicoot games. Still play it from time to time. It was the first game I ever bought myself. I was about 6 or 7 at the time. I'm now 21 and I still love it. Definitely a good game.

Theme Hospital.

Even after all these years, it's still a pleasant game to look at and play. And as a management sim game, it's certainly never been beaten.

I thought that was so glaringly obvious I didn't even have to mention it. :P

Of course graphically, the character models are pretty bad, and most levels are rather sparsely cluttered compared to games today... But that's what mods are for. Go HTDP, New Vision and Revision!

nah the French modding scene is huuuuuge

I'm 99% sure that the Crash Bandicoot mod is french... after all the title on the page is "Crash Bandicoot Return - le mod pour Crysis" (the mod for Crysis, if you don't speak French)

Another game that ages well: Doom 2, I played it at a LAN party recently and it was awesome

Most stylised and/or 2D games, actually. The realism approach in the mainstream just ages games faster. Really, really fast.

Agreed. Many 2D games from the early 90s aged very well, while many 3D games from the 90s haven't aged particulary well at all.

Anyway, some games of the 80s and 90s that I still enjoy greatly :P
Phantasy Star
Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap
Another World
Flashback
Agony
Super Cars II
Shadow of the Beast
Streets of Rage
Super Mario World
F-Zero
Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past
Super Metroid
Final Fantasy VI
Chrono Trigger
UFO: Enemy Unknown
Indiana Jones: Fate of the Atlantis
Day of the Tentacle
Suikoden
Suikoden II
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

I still enjoy the original System Shock and Daggerfall a great deal too, but I wouldn't say their graphics aged well.

Original Halo
Driver and Driver 2 on PS1. Damn good games, those were
TES games are like good wine; better with age! Though I much prefer them over wine :foodndrink:
