Without a doubt, Deus Ex was one of the best game stories I had ever experienced. It pulled me in from the start and held my attention throughout eight playthroughs. For me, a huge part of its fascination was the inclusion of "real world" organizations and conspiracy theories, and all of this played out in a familiar, and realistic world. As I walked through Battery Park, speaking with the sick, the drugged, and the homeless, I felt like I was part of a living world not too different from today's world. Walking through Hell's Kitchen's desolate streets, with its no-class, run-down hotel and night club, understaffed and undersupplied clinic, inhabited by all forms of scum, I felt like I was truly experiencing a world being stripped of freedom and safety, and the scariest part? It put me in a place that isn't much different from some of the places I've seen in my life. Besides the setting, the storyline itself was so full of twists, turns, and revelations, that it kept me on edge, always eager to see where it was going next, and it all flowed naturally. Partly thanks to very memorable and well developed characters.
Runner-up's would be Morrowind, Bioshock, and Dragon Age.
