Gamespot Review spot on or disagree?

http://www.gamespot.com/reviews/fallout-4-review/1900-6416306/

I don't know if anyone has caught this yet, but here is the review by gamespot.

And before you watch the video, there are some gameplay spoilers, nothing story driven.

But do you agree with the reviewer?

is the look of somethings in the game outdated but there is so much to explore and see that you just don't care?

Could companion scripting be updated and allow for the A.I. of the character to actually be useful?

thoughts?

Well, pretty disappointed in the graphics and companion AI. Exploration and crafting look good. Not sure how the new leveling/perk system will work. Looks like early on it may be fine, but how well is it at later levels? What level will I need to be before I'm actually playing the character I was trying to build since level 1? Be interesting to see.

I've always been disappointed at the companion systems. Its svck a hassle to stop combat to try and get your companions to do something they should of been doing in the first place. ED-E was pretty much the only companion I didn't worry about most of the time except for a pack mule. With him flying around, he always worked.... except when I got to a particular ledge or something that he couldn't "traverse".....

but other than that it looks good. I mean Skyrim's graphics weren't the best but I still loved it. I love fallout games so i'll love this one too. I'm just hoping that higher leveling won't be such a grind. i'll be putting lots of points into attributes that get me to the gun modding early so that way i'll have an edge.

Lonesome Road ED-E was the best robot companion i've seen ^_^ And surprisingly lot of personality for a thing that didn't have facial expressions and couldn't talk :hehe:

Yeah, I know, halo 5 is the worst sometimes. Half the time i'm yelling at the screen for the squad members to move out my line of fire or to keep up, but atleast the squad commands are simple. Just point at something and hit up on the D pad to do it.

Well i don't typically play with companions. Even if their AI was much improved id still rather just go by it on my own. So that criticism, even if completely valid, does not actually affect me.

Glitches and not the most natural animations are entirely in my line of expectations, it's a Bethesda game afterall. Same can be said for UI, it's a Bethesda game. I had hoped these were things they would really improve like what they did for the combat, but from the look of things this is not the case. As the reviewer also mentions, these are the typical Bethesda quirks Maybe next time they can bring in an expert from another developer to help them with that?

Don't think I've ever had a companion AI I've liked. All those times Lydia stepped in front of me before my hammer finished dropping .... :(

I'll still have to wait and see.

I'm just wondering if Dogmeat is still considered a true companion, because if not, then the Lone Wanderer perk would work well. If true companion, then I guess i'll be throwing points into Inspirational then.

Sounds good to me! The downsides mentioned in the review are things that I pretty much expected. I don't need cutting-edge graphics or the best animation, and glitches/bugs are par for the course in such a game. Hopefully some of the games problems can be fixed in patches and updates. Overall though, this review has me even more excited for the game...

Yeah, happened to me too. And I was one of those people on consoles who did the alchemy exploit to get my weapons to pretty much 1 million damage and my carry weight to a million..... i'd one hit everything............ and 9 times out of 10 I would have to reload my last save because I nailed my companion with a stray arrow, so, I just stopped having companions.... and horses, dragons ate my horses a lot until Shadowmere.....

Heres hoping that nothing like that happens in FO4... and heres hoping to have a mode of transportation other than walking or fast travel. Let us tame the two headed deer!

A couple of thing that will never happen;

  • we being ok with graphics, sure most of us might not care, but it can never be too good for us.
  • AI is smart. There will always be moments with companion AI were you just want too facepalm your keyboard with the way they act.
  • Be absolutely 100% pleased with a game. There will always be bits and pieces that we wish were "this" or "that" or "so". Its our expectations deceiving us.

That said, i actualy found the review very positive, the gripes he had i could live with, and the points he praised sound alot like things i would apreciate.

Im really disapointed with stealth. It seems that Bethesda didnt fix the problems we saw in Skyrim. Here, from PC Gamer review:

Also, the short side quests related to factions - another problem from skyrim - are a let down.

But, overall reviews are good and the game sounds really fun.

Sounds like a fair review and I would say I will probably Share the same opinion.

In a sense, I'm glad that Fallout 4 is very similar to Fallout 3 in looks and features. Too many times a company will take a great game in their series and then radically alter the sequel and it turns out to be complete garbage *cough* Dragon Age*cough*

I loved Fallout 3 so at least I feel confident in k owing I will love this title too. That said, the graphics, animations, AI companions, and stealth mechanics definitely look like they could have been better improved and polished.

After seeing some of the gameplay footage, I don't see what the fuss is about graphics, I mean it looks a hell of a lot better than fallout 3 ever did. Its more vibrant, yeah sure some colors look washed out but still good.

Also, I was wondering something, since it seems you can either wear power armor or not since it doesn't just magically become equipable from your inventory anymore, does power armor give you extra carry weight? I mean youre a large badass in armor now, so you should get extra carry weight.

Also, I've been noticing a "Transfer" option when you loot containers along with a take option... what does this option do?

I'm going to have to disagree with the reviewer based on reading some other reviews and my very limited knowledge of leaks. I've seen elsewhere that the story isn't very good, the writing is still bad, that factions backstories aren't very well written, the dialogue system is bad, etc. Which is completely opposite of what the pros and cons of the Gamespot review say.

Of course I can't be actually sure until I play the game tomorrow. So take what I'm saying with a grain of salt since my knowledge is secondhand while theirs is firsthand.

Edit: I'd be more likely to trust Forbes. They're claiming the story is good, so perhaps it is, but I'm still going to keep expectations low all things considered.

Dragon Age II wasn't a failure because of the radical alterations. It was mainly a failure because the environments were stale and repetitive and the story was lackluster. The combat was leaps and bounds better than Origins', though some whiners preferred the more isometric turn-based approach to actual action.

Yeah for the most part but after trying for my 30th attempt at that forerunner guy you have to shoot in the back, only for all 3 to get downed in under a minute because they lack the ability to move and shoot at the same time, you kinda see them as a little too "simple" minded.

I still can't get the video to load.

However like all reviews, it does not really matter. The only review that matters is mine and mine alone. I will like or not like the game, or aspects of the game, based on my game play, not someone else's.

We wont know if its spot on until we play the game bud. But as far as honesty, the review sounds honest and points out both negatives and positives but based off of what the reviewer said I'd expect a score slightly lower than a 9.

I haven't played the game yet, but from review footage etc I'd say some textures are outdated. However, long gone are the days where I have to have a PC game maxed out to be overly happy with it regardless of gameplay. I'm content with what I've seen and it will in no way effect the way I play or enjoy the game.
