80's gaming crash

Post » Sun Dec 11, 2011 4:11 pm

Hey someone made a reference to this in one of their comments. I wonder if this will happen again, the trend that lead to the 80's crash was also caused by a load of crap, by companies hoping to cash in on video games, flooding the market leading to people just not playing games anymore. Though as I type this I realize the industry has grown and the gaming community is huge so I doubt it, but maybe something similar will happen?

Doubt it, gaming industries to mature and proliferated to be eradicated by a few greedy companies, sure gamers may become disenchanted with content and the industry might erode a little but there will always be indie developers (now that content distribution is superior to the 80's) and the rise of new developers (the gaming industry consists of qualified professionals now that will be forced to reenter the industry or face redundancy). In addition theres alot more competitivity in the industry than back in the 80's, greedy capitalisation isn't as feasible due to higher expectations.

Finally, dont forget there are still legitimate publishers out there, take CD Projekt Red's announcement of free DLC content and their quick response to community problems. Basically its only EA and Activision that are acquiring too much of the industry and abusing developers with their insane profit expectations and capitalisation tactics.

Yae I guess a lot of factors have changed from then to now...and indie developers are in the thousands. It would be nice though if something could cause companies to realize that they should pull up their socks. I love big flashy games with their shiny graphics and over the top action, but I’m starting to feel like a cow that is being misled into a barn just so they can milk me for all I’ve got. The gaming industry rakes in billions, I just wish they would show their appreciation a little more for us gamers.

There are still games that offer good bang for your buck, its just unfortunate that COD and its equivalents occupy such a huge share of the market. With not much competitivity theres little incentive for Activision not to milk it and other companies to follow by example. Sadly this problem is largely caused by gamers, I mean every year almost a million people will transition to a new COD release that is no better than the last and the rest are forced to follow suite if they want servers :(

Yes, they all want to be billion dollar empires like activision blizzard. They seem to forget that there is a world wide recession, and when i think about being hungry or playing a new map, which do you think wins?

We still have Blizzard. In my opinion they are one of the few companies out there that put out some quality stuff and actually back it up. Wether you like their type of games or not its still top notch stuff.
