Gaming Let Downs

Post » Wed Jun 30, 2010 2:03 pm

Killzone was the first one that popped to mind. I mean, there could be worse let downs, but everyone held that game pretty high before release.

Also, I'm not all the way through it, but FFXIII might be a let down. That first 20 hours, while not as bad as everyone makes it out to be (I love story and that's what you get, so nyeh), was kinda tedious.

Age of Empires III was another one for me. It was too different from AoEII and the time period did not interest me in the slightest.

Guild Wars Nightfall and Eye of the North as well were not as good as the original, Factions wasn't either I guess. All of those games just took all the fun from the original. Sure they had some fun classes but factions story was rushed, Nightfall added heroes which removed alot of the multiplayer from the game, and Eye of the North added too much grind. I thought the original was amazing but then went down hill.

Bioshock 2. huge, HUGE let down. I don't know why they had to add multiplayer. :meh:

You don't have to play the multiplayer if you don't want to. You can't claim that it detracted from the single player experience either as the multiplayer was handled by another studio entirely. I wasn't too impressed with the idea of a sequel to Bioshock myself, but I bought it on the cheap a couple of weeks ago and played through it and actually quite enjoyed it. Not as good as the first game, but a solid sequel I think.

Obliv *SMACK* okay, okay. Something else then...

Mass Effect - I heard so many good things about it, and I have no doubt the story is good. But the combat system was just a mess. It was not challenging, it was just frustrating. I quit the game because of that,

turn up any games difficulty enough and it becomes like that. I enjoyed combat on Mass Effect 1 on.. Can't remember the name, but it's the hardest you can go in your first playthrough. The real killer for the ME series is the fact I can only play it once or twice, then get bored. But it's like that for all games with me (campaign's anyways). I also hated in ME1 how you couldn't separate your squad, meaning, one person move left, the other move to the right. So most of the time, I would have them both sit in one place, run up to the enemy, shoot them a little, any Krogans would follow me, and fall straight into my Squad's trap :D

Oh, and Halo 3:ODST was a let down. It should have been an expansion.
Gears Of War 2's multiplayer. The campaign was good, Horde mode was ok, but overall, the multiplayer was generally "Luck" based, and has now become (thanks to the updates), nearly impossible for Gears 1 veterans. Heh, even though I'm not a Gears 1 vet, I'm a Gears 2 before the updates veteran! meaning I <3 to lead my shots through lag.

Woah dude, I hope that was a joke!

It wasn't. Those games let me down in a big way by being a but stripped shadows of their predecessors that just happened to be good games (to me) not only, but in a large part, because of the features that were cut down, replaced with something not even comparable or streamlined to the point where it could barely be even recognized to be a presentation of the old system.

Even if those dislikes are completely insane. :P

We're all a bit insane in our little worlds. :P

There a lot of games here that aren't too bad.

Really though, Mercenaries 2. I would say that whoever thought, "I have an idea, lets improve the graphics, add nukes, and fix 0% of the problems in this game, while removing 90% of the fun and challenge from the first game" should be fired, but Pandemic is dead anyways, so good riddance.

Oh and I'm predicting Max Payne 3 is going to be a horrible let down, all I needed to do was watch the one 30 second trailer, its going to be Modern Warfare 2 with Max dropped right in the middle of it (if you can even call that guy Max Payne any more, seriously)

I've got to agree. I'm a big fan of the Max Payne series, but what's been shown of Max Payne 3 just isn't Max Payne at all. It looks awful.

Dealing with mass effect I found it interesting, but I will agree that it was a bit of a let down in that I didn't feel any different playing a soldier then playing a tech. Only real difference I found is I didn't need a tech in the group to hack a console since I was the tech. Another let down was some of the modifications for ammunition where they said it would do this, this and this when really I saw no difference. Only difference I really saw was with other rounds vs explosive rounds overheating my bleeping gun after 2 shots doing only 1/4 damage to enemies.

The greatest dissapointment so far would be Skate. 3. Really svcky graphics, skate.park editor which lags like you've never seen before, bad character creator with too little options and variations. I really liked Skate. and Skate. 2, so I had high hopes for this game, but eventually it let me down...

Anyone else disappointed with the Megaman X gaming series after X4? Megaman X, X2, and X3 were great with X4 being pretty decent. However I just found that they were just going down hill with X5 through to 8 imho. Probably say X3 was my favorite one with X6 just being sad.

CnC 4.

I'd like to add to that: Every C&C game after the first Red Alert (though, each has been gradually less looked forward to by me).

Halo 3's campaign was terrible. Thankfully, the multiplayer and forge made up for it.

Oblivion

My first encounter with the Elder Scrolls was Morrowind. I loved that game because it teansported me to a new and alien world with wierd buildings, bugs used as busses, and a completely different lore.

Oblivion just seemed like playing another middle ages game. Nothing to wisk me away or that was completely new; not enthralling.

edit: Oh, I just saw NeverWinter Nights 2. That reminded me about NWN 1. I never finished it, I and thought so poorly about it that I never tried NWN2.

Modern Warfare 2- Although my expectations were low, the game turned out to be alot worse than that.

Red Dead Redemption- Fun singleplayer game, multiplayer is awful.

Tom Clancy's End War- Wasn't really let down as much as other games, but the voice commands were awful.

Aliens vs Predator- Fun online game, disappointed because of low number of players and extremely short campaign.

Call of Duty: World at War- Very imbalanced online with a boring campaign.

Far Cry 2- Fun game, although a lack of a fast travel system that didn't transport you to the corners of the map, dumb AI, and bad gun mechanics were a big let down.

RA 2 was fun and RA 3 was acceptable after six months worth of patches. I bought RA3 on release day and infantry pwned EVERYTHING and vehicles svcked. Royally. RA2:YR is still my fave CnC game :)

For me it was Morrowind. Please bear in mind, I love the game now, but when it first came out I hated the character generation system, so I was so disapointd. But after a few hours of game play, Morrowind is one of my all time favorite games. Another let down was Oblivion. Bethesda hyped it up really good, and when I played it, it wasn't Morrowind 2, so it was a really big let down. After a month on not playing it, it's another game I dearly love.

So now I will not expect TES V of anything this way I will not be disapointed when it comes out and then love it.

One of the most disapointing games that I do not play is Civilization III. Again we all loved Civ 2 and this game being soooooooooooooooo hyped, it was a really big let down. I even bought the collectors edition. That was another let down as well.

Masters of Orion 3. It is another big let down but I still play it. It's ok, but not as good as the previous Moo games.

Ya the new one made by Sega really just didn't feel that innovative nor did it improve on things. I liked it, but i'm close to being a diehard fan of the AvP series. One thing that's really angering me is they refuse to release an SDK with which fans of the series could use to help tweak the game to make it even better. Thing that I found awesome at first, but really became lack luster was the trophy kills for the Predator. First time I claimed my trophy I was like "OMGWT*BBQ SWEETNESS" however after the 10th to 12th trophy it's like "yea...another trophy". It is a great idea, but felt like an after second thought piece of eye candy.

C&C: Generals was, in my opinion, the best of the lot after RA. I dunno, I guess with each sequel they went a bit too much towards a scifi stuff for me to get interested, but I guess there just wasn't enough stuff that would renew the formula otherwise.

 I liked Tiberium Wars and RA3 and their expansions, but Zero Hour is also my favorite. I will never play C&C4 :D

As for Oblivion, after playing Morrowind and reading the common complaints of it, i completely understand why Oblivion is the way it is. Few design mishaps, but if Fallout 3 (before Broken Steel) is anything to go by, TESV will kick ass.

No game has really disappointed me, because i have no expectations. I just play the game, and like it or not.

I had a blast with it, but, I dunno. Multiplayer was lots of fun. It wasn't a let down for me and my brother, but I think overall it was.
