Gaming Let Downs

Post » Wed Jun 30, 2010 2:04 pm

Ahh, exactly the topic I needed:

Worms Reloaded. IT svckS SPOTTED FREAKIN' OWL.
I was soooo excited, being an ol' Armageddon fan, but it's a disaster.
It's just a shoddy port from Xbox 360.
The menus are so bad and clunky I wanted to kill myself, and in-game, the view is so zoomed in (which works fine on a TV when sitting in a couch, not on a PC) that I got no sense of scale or direction, and I had no idea where the other worms were.
The zoomed in view also makes the map look pixel-y, which looks weird in comparison with the smooth and hi-res worms.
The animations are horrible. Really bad. They feel robotic and have none of the charm the old worms had.
The A.I. is stupid beyond belief (in my first game, one A.I. worm threw a grenade, walked up to it, stood on it and died).
The "start new game" menu is horrible. There is no direct access to game rules, instead you have to go back to the main menu and into "customization" and whatnot. Well inside the rules setup menu, its so clunky it takes you half an hour to configure an ammo loadout.
You can only have 4 worms per team.
Rope physics are terrible and not at all as bouncy and flexible as the old ones.
Good weapons have been removed, bad ones have been added (though that's not to say that no good weapons have been added, but those are in a minority).
Even when you are playing as a single human participant, you still have a hotseat countdown each time it's your turn, and every time you cancel it, the view twitches and relocates the camera. It seems like a miniscule complaint, but it gets really freaking annoying after a couple of turns since it breaks your concentration.
The weapon selection menu is terrible and clunky in-game.

And so on.
I will never play it again. It's like they took the old worms, applied a layer of shiny crap that bogs it all down though making it seem nicer at a first look, removed some features and removed the charm.

This, so hard. I expected it to be a new version of Worms: Armageddon, but when I tried it out, it had been simplified way too much. Unless the devs pulls off a miracle, I'll stick to Worms: Armageddon.

Exactly. The most recent patch for Armageddon has everything Reloaded has to offer... plus infinity.

I enjoyed StarCraft II but I thought the story was a bit weak.

Spoiler
In the original, Kerrigan defeats General Duke and the entirety of the Dominion forces (my favorite character) and Fenix and his Protoss, destroys the U.E.D. fleet who had held their own against the second Overmind and Protoss fleets, forces Zeratul to kill his own Matriarch, pretty much one of the greatest villains in gaming history. And then in 2 she meets Jimmy Raynor and some funny artifact and she's human again. Such a waste. http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Starcraft and you'll realize how much better the storyline and writing were in the first game. Mengsk was a real person with intense personal conflict, his ambition and thirst for revenge overtaking his disgust for warfare and the Confederacy. In the sequel he's just another tyrant waiting to fall.

Not to say it's a bad game, or even a bad sequel. Just not as good.

With Starcraft II It looks interesting, but what ticks me off is they already have 2 expansions planned for it with possible new units. Feels like they are just really trying to milk their fans to death which seems kind of wrong. Starting to wonder if they'll charge like $40 for the 2 other releases playing them as massive expansions.

As for Oblivion, after playing Morrowind and reading the common complaints of it, i completely understand why Oblivion is the way it is. Few design mishaps, but if Fallout 3 (before Broken Steel) is anything to go by, TESV will kick ass.

I personally predict that Bethesda is going to take the issues that were raised in both Oblivion and Fallout 3 (+ all DLCs) and once again overcompensate trying to fix them in TES V and create more problems.

That probably won't be too far from the truth.

Which is why I'll wait until they release the three games in one package when it'll be at a good price. :)
When I learned that the current release is only about the Terrans' campaign, I preferred to wait before purchasing it. Otherwise I'll end up spending 150$ for the whole 3 games.

Not really milk since they wanted a big campaign from the beginning. I mean almost 30 missions for one race. Then you would have had to squeeze in 60 more for the Protoss and Zerg races. Plus units and upgrades. All on one or two DVD's and charge after that. I'd rather shell out 120 bucks over three years then 120 buck all on one game. Never

Ya I feel the same way when dealing with a game like this.

Still it feels like they are releasing 1/3rd of a game to me which is somewhat disappointing. Was kind of like "...wait wha? they already have expansions planned for it?" when I heard they were doing a 3 part thing. Even though this is a complete game it just feels kind of like they are trying to milk this "ULTIMATE RELEASE HAS COME WE RELEASE STARCRAFT II" thing.

Personally i love Blizzard for doing that. Nowadays it's rare to see such commitment to the singleplayer portion of a game. Especially an RTS game.

Well I knew from last year that they felt the game too small and decided to split the game up into 3 chapters.

Still I kind of feel...jerked by Blizzard I guess like they want as much money as they can. Though this isn't to say i'm not going to play it i'll just wait until they release all 3 chapters in a sort of special GOTY edition that goes for like $50. Was still miffed I went to my local target and found the game cost $59 instead of $49 for PC. Will never pay $60 for a PC game and the only thing that will make me do that is if it's a CE of some type or has special goodies inside.

Diablo 2 was a letdown in some ways, after years of hearing how great it was. It was fun but a grind after a while, hacking and slashing your way through the demons.

Hellgate:London was enjoyable but had some odd elements to it that practically sabotage the game, such as the unlikeable NPCs and the inability to save where you choose.

Baldur's Gate wasn't really worth buying, to me, after playing BG 2 and Throne of Bhaal. It was a letdown years later when I finally got around to buying the original BG, and the original's NPCs weren't as good.

Oblivion for me. I don't know why but straight off the bat I felt so lost and overwhelmed with everything, which was weird cuz I never felt that way about a video game. I'm guna give it another chance as soon as I can but I get why people think its so great.

I think that, like "Morrowind", you have to take the game a step at a time -- walk before you try to run, in effect. I can see how the amount of freedom in a sandbox game could be overwhelming. I hope you can try it again someday.

I paid $99 for it (the CE, which was worth it). The single player aspect alone was worth the standard retail price of $59. SC2 - WoL gives more "bang for the buck" than any other RTS. The reason for splitting it into 3 was legitimate, each race gets a fully flushed out campaign... with all of the assorted niceties that come with that.

StarCraft (1) had what, 10 missions per race? StarCraft 2 is giving 30.

WoL alone gets me :

Single Player -
Full Terran campaign with some of the most beautiful (if not the most beautiful) cut scenes of any game.
Challenge mode (pitted against AI for specific tactical scenarios)
VS AI mode
Multiple unlockables and achievements (if that's your thing)

Multi-Player -
1 vs 1
2 vs 2
3 vs 3
4 vs 4
Free For All
2 vs AI
3 vs AI

If every mission is so different from the next as it was in Wings of Liberty, I'm really looking forward to what Blizz is planning to do. Also, if the Terrans had a Toss mini-campaign, Zerg would get a Terran one and Protoss a Zerg one. Sure hope that comes to pass.

At any rate, I will only purchase the Zerg CE, if it's as well-styled as the Terran one was. Which is probable. And then it will sit next to my boxes of hydralisk head SC1 and Kerrigan's face. ^_^

The map editor + what i've seen capable with it is one reason I really want to get it, but again that $60 price tag kinda makes me back away. Already plopped down $$$ for the CE of FONV, but if I had some spare cash I might think about SCII. It's just that price tag + the focus on 1 race thing that kinda bugs me a bit. Course that's just me and my view about it won't harsh anyone for disagreeing with me.
