Gaming Let Downs

Post » Wed Jun 30, 2010 9:56 am

Modern Warfare 2
Halo 3: ODST
Brütal Legend
Viva Pi?ata: Trouble in Paradise (not terrible, but average compared to the first)
Left 4 Dead 2 (again, a good game, but bad compared to the first)

L4D2 i'm not sure about, but I do agree that after a while it really loses its luster. Mutations brought me back a couple of times and i'll play a little bit however I just find i've got better games to play. That steam 4th of July blow out sale let me get like 10 to 12 games for like $10 to $12 a pop that normally would have cost me $30 to $40 so I saved like 200 to 300.

My biggest gaming letdowns are Metal Gear Solid 2, Hitman 2 and Deus Ex 2. Since then I haven't really had any letdowns.

For me it was Deus Ex 2 and my last pc game purchase Alpha Protocol... crappy controls and some odd things that didn't let me choose the ending.

Oh, and All Points Bulletin let me down tremendously. I admittedly only played the beta but the finished version was, from what I've read, pretty much the same. It failed to live up to it's immense potential. You know an MMO is bad when you don't even want to play the free beta after a while.

I was right there with you. (You know, we played the beta together a few times.) I still believe that the game could become really good, it just needs time. MMOs are some of the only games that get better with age.

Far Cry 2 was a real let down to me. It may sound odd, but one of the things that made me the angriest was the fact that you couldn't go prone. The were so many maps that I wanted to make but couldn't. Unlike in the first Far Cry, which was located on a tropical island, the water was very murky. I couldn't see anything. That pretty much destroyed any chance of maps having any kind of underwater section, not to mention the characters couldn't hold their breath worth a damn. All in all I find Far Cry's map editor to be better, even if there are less options.

The reminds me, in Far Cry weapons were pick-ups. You could choose what guns people used. If you didn't want people sniping then you didn't add any sniper rifles. However, in Far cry 2 people spawn with "kits", ruining what could have been a good map if nobody sniped.

My memory isn't that bad SimpsonFly :P

Luckily my memory is selective enough that when I think of the beta I most just about you, me, Suffca and Gamemaster having fun, or the closest APB allowed to fun. I don't know if APB can improve much though, Realtime Worlds has been in the news recently for laying off a lot of it's staff and going into confirmation, which is like bankruptcy apparently. They said they'll keep supporting the game but I doubt they'll ever do more than simply support it, in their current state at least.

Has there ever been a game that really disappointed you that you waited for so long to play and once you played it you felt let down by it in the end?

Far Cry 2 comes to mind and I kind of wanted to play it because I saw all the ads for it along with the video footage. Friend was kind enough to give it to me as a gift since we do exchanges around X-Mas time. Was definitely let down by how repetitive the game was and how weak the story line was all the way to the end.

Alone in the Dark for the X-Box 360. It was over hyped and had the worst controls I've ever played for a game. I give it a -1 out of 5 (It should have never been made).

Oooh, too many to list, I reckon. Still, no hurt in trying, eh?

There's been Neverwinter Nights, NWN 2 and MoTB, Thief 3, Hitman 3 or 4, Return to Krondor (and how!), X-Com games with subtitle starting with 'After', Heroes 3 expansion with the Flux town, Heroes 5, Red Tide (and how!), Fallout Tactics, Deus Ex, The Guild 2, King's Bounty, Commandos 3, Outcast, Anachronox (five minutes of stability, for crying out loud!), Dragon Age, Baldur's Gate 2 expansion, Jagged Alliance 2 expansion, Final Fantasy 8, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, Messiah, Metal Gear Solid 2 off the top of my skullbox.

Dark Sector. What a bloody mess.

Shhhhhh . . . Dark Sector NEVER happened.

Assassins creed. It was just repetitive, assassinations felt very much the same, not many weapons just a sword, dagger, throwing knives. It wasn't even nearly as good of an assassination game as hitman blood money.

I forgot about Assassin's Creed. What a repetitive mess.

I know a lot of people say this, but it really was just an overpriced expansion to L4D. It should have been DLC. Not only that, but I hated the new zombies and I hate the new characters. I also hated all of the new weapons other than the melee weapons and the three-burst rifle.

Valve seems to think that way too, as their still supporting both games. L4D2 was really just L4D1.5.

An actual game this time:

Legend of Mana.

Gorgeous game and many likable characters (Gilbert, you lovestruck fool), but it really could've benefited from a strong, main storyline. I had only played through the Jumi arc, but was somewhat confused throughout the quest and it was no substitute for a proper adventure that you'd get in other JRPGs. Perhaps the Faerie and Dragon arcs are written better, or are easier to follow, and make up for the game's single, though rather large, flaw.

I did like being able to sit down for only an hour or two and power through a few fun little stories though. A lot of modern RPGs could take note from that. It was still pretty disappointing though. It's never a good feeling to finish a game and think only about how much better it could've been.

Edit- Oh, and Mass Effect 2. The main quest was short and, along with Harbinger, can't even be compared to ME. Plus, you don't just remove the inventory and add ammunition to weapons. Terrible decisions on BioWare's part.

By the same logic, you could say that WarCraft 3 was StarCraft in Azeroth, and generalisations like that are worth garbage.

I seem to be one of the few people in this thread who actually enjoyed the first Assassin's Creed, and wasn't all that disappointed with Far Cry 2. Sure, I have my share of complaints about both of them, but I wasn't disappointed with them. To each their own I guess.

Though I played those way back before Ubisoft sprouted horns with their DRM and their decision to not include physical manuals in their games anymore, becoming the first publisher I ever refused to buy games from. It's a shame too, they make a lot of good games, and the games they publish from other developers are often really good too, but I would just feel dirty buying a game with their logo on it now.

BioShock 2- Don't get me wrong, I actually do think that BioShock 2 is a good game. However, I just feel like something is missing from the single player that made the first BioShock so magical for me. I think it's mostly that the levels weren't very well designed, in my opinion, and I didn't like playing as a Bid Daddy. Multiplayer was also completely unnecessary to include, I think.

Ninja Gaiden II- Same with BioShock, it's good but just doesn't touch the first. They changed the fundamental gameplay too much in that it's more about throwing waves of mindless 'baddies' at you that spam cheapass explosive shuriken attacks than it is about skillfully outmaneuvering small attack waves of more well thought out enemies that Ninja Gaiden Black had. It's also far too linear; it's more of a 'reach the next checkpoint and get a free heal at the save station' type of game rather than giving you a moderate amount of exploration.

Gears of War 2- my God, this game is bad. It's a bit better than it was at release because some patches fixed some of the downright broken issues with the game, but it still doesn't even touch the majesty of the first game. It's a slow paced boring game. Horde is the only saving grace, and that's mostly in part because it inspires games that don't svck to have a similar mode so I can play i there rather than in Gears 2.

Modern Warfare 2- I really like the Spec Ops (minus the Juggernaut missions; those can kiss my ass) and the campaign, but the multiplayer had so much potential that ruined it. Call of Duty 4 was great in that it didn't try to go too far with the cheap tricks you can pull. It's a shame, because Modern Warfare 2 actually did a lot of things right (like lack of grenade spamming and martyrdom) but is completely ruined by:

* The maps svck compared to Call of Duty 4's
* The insane amount of cheating, even on the Xbox version
* Killstreak are so broken and game changing. I'm sorry if having to run inside a building every 30 seconds lest I get blown up by magical [censored] in the sky every time I spawn isn't my idea of fun.
* All people do is camp. Granted, people camped in CoD4, but it's even worse in MW2 because there are even more people doing it because they want their killstreaks. Even in the newly added barebones playlitsts (thank God), people still camp because they're so used to doing it. Plus, the maps just make it too easy to camp with their [censored] maphack heartbeat sensors. Gotta love being forced to pick Ninja just so you don't get maphacked. Yay.
* Absolutely ridiculous classes. WTF is with these Speedy Gonzalez knife-only classes? Stupid. And noob tubing is even noobier now that you can get an infinite supply of them (scavenger) and put on Danger Close at the same time that increases the already cheap splash radius. Ugh.

Resident Evil 5- I liked the game, but it just wasn't Resident Evil. Hell, I even loved Resident Evil 4 because it was actually pretty intense, but the changing of the RE formula was pushed too far with RE5. Co-op? How does this belong in a horror (lol) game? It's not even trying to be scary anymore, it's just another shoot-em-up, albeit a good one.

Army Men: Sarge's War- I imagine a lot of you are wondering why this is even here. Funny story, actually. When I was a little kid, I used to play Sarge's Heroes 1 & 2 all the time and later heard about a new Army Men game and grew ecstatic. I remember calling my local EBGames every day for a couple weeks to see if it came out. I gave up after a while because it never did. :( Then one day, and this is after not playing Sarge's Heroes for years, I just randomly see it in Wal-Mart for $15 and was like 'OMG YES YES YES!" I took it home and nearly vomited. How could this game be such a pile of puke when Sarge's Heroes was so great? I lament and return to a classic reunion with Sarge's Heroes. "Wow.." I thought to myself, "this game svcks, too. How did I like this when I was a kid?"

GAMES THAT DID NOT DISAPPOINT ME (feel this thread needs some optimism):

Oblivion- I had high hopes for this game and still was not let down. Awesome job, Bethesda!

Star Wars Battlefront 2- There's a couple things I liked better about the first, but I think the second is an all-around better game. Yay for sequels that don't svck.

Dead Space- I was really looking forward to this game, but was skeptical about it since EA was developing it. Damn, it turned out to be one of the best horror games I've ever played. I remember thinking of it as a placeholder for Resident Evil 5 only to like it better. Ha ha.

Mass Effect 2- This is one hell of a way to do a sequel. Make everything bad about the first game great while not fixing what ain't broken.

Assassin's Creed 2- Absolutely everything about this game is better than the first. A sequel that manages to do this is so rare I had to mention this game. The only thing I liked better about the first was it was a bit more challenging because you couldn't recover your health instantly thanks to those cheap medicine vials. Oh well, that's just a small nitpick.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2- I remember thinking the first Bad Company was crap, but then I played the Xbox Live demo for the second and was absolutely blown away. Amazing job, DICE.

I seem to be one of the few people in this thread who actually enjoyed the first Assassin's Creed

I liked it, but some of the assassinations were either set up poorly or I lacked the tact/skill to execute them correctly. It probably didn't help that I was interested in achievements at the time, so I did all of what made AC seem so repetitive in the first place. I drew the line at hunting Templars and collecting flags though.

Yeah..now that you mention, they could have taken the plot in a better direction, I think. Oh well, I still think that AC2 is a lot of fun compared to the first, which was still good but was too repetitive.

it was much more fun, but the system for rebuilding monterrigoni only got so far, after that i still had like 75% of the main storyline to go through.. it improved on some of the things that svcked back in the first one, while i still wished we spent more time with desmond and not ezio. it also wouldve helped if they had some HUD while playing as desmond, i almost couldnt tell what i was doing..

Not too many games disappoint me because I can call them as I see them if theyll be a let down or not. The only game that got me was Far Cry 2. Map editing was great, but ehh the rest...

Dungeon Lords
Orcs & Elves, but only because of how incredibly short it was.

I really tend to not buy many games that I don't think I'm going to like, and I usually wait for reviews first so I get an accurate picture of it
