Gaming Let Downs

Post » Tue Jun 29, 2010 8:13 pm

Has there ever been a game that really disappointed you that you waited for so long to play and once you played it you felt let down by it in the end?

Far Cry 2 comes to mind and I kind of wanted to play it because I saw all the ads for it along with the video footage. Friend was kind enough to give it to me as a gift since we do exchanges around X-Mas time. Was definitely let down by how repetitive the game was and how weak the story line was all the way to the end.

Modern Warfare 2. I played it before on a friends system, it wasn't that fun. It's vastly over rated in my opinion.

Didn't happen very often, I tend to keep to the facts. But going from those, GTA4 looked mighty fine - more realism, grittier, yet supposed to have the same wit and charm. It lost some of the more crazy stuff, and then you had to figure in the missions, and stupid companion system. No, I don't want to go bowling or play snooker... Though actually, I'd rather do that, then again go to my agent, get a mission, drive there for an eternity, kill, drive somewhere else for an eternity, kill, end.

Far Cry 2 was pretty bad. I saw screenshots and stuff for it but still expected it to be similar to the original Far Cry. Luckily I got it when a company was going out of business so it didn't really cost me anything.

Neverwinter Nights 2 was another that did not live up to expectations set by the original. I found it so dull I couldn't even finish Chapter 1.

Unreal Tournament 3 is another that failed to meet expectations. Sure it is fun but not as much as certain game modes in Unreal Tournament 2004. Plus it lacks the same amount of variety in maps (though fixed with user made), characters, and game modes.

I am sure I can come up with more but that is my list that was come up with quite quickly.

Modern Warfare 2
Halo 3: ODST
Brütal Legend
Viva Pi?ata: Trouble in Paradise (not terrible, but average compared to the first)
Left 4 Dead 2 (again, a good game, but bad compared to the first)

Halo 3 for me (found Halo 2 to be the strongest game of the series, actually.) Mostly because, well, it doesn't really contribute much to the series as a whole, just a wrap-up of almost all the loose threads from Halo and Halo 2.

Doesn't mean I didn't like it- I just was expecting better for a "End of the story!" game.

Definitely, when i first got my PS3, i bought this game, thinking it was gonna be so awesome..i was literally thinking these thoughts:

"Oh my god, this will be friggin awesome...great multiplayer, 50 hours of gameplay to keep me away from my GBA and FF2.."
"holy crap! these are graphics!"
"..."
"i'd definitely like to play this game sometime soon, not just having a long trip through jeep advertising and bad plotline.."
"whoa whoa whoa...WTF? Malaria???"
"alright..lets kill some folks..."
"dang you need a lot of bullets to kill them..."
"Who the hell are you? wait...thats a terrible accent, and an even worse explanation as to why you're saving me! I'm here to kill you!"
"alright...gotta break some people out of a jail...how did he see me??"
"ill just hide here...and by god! theyre back in a minute? friggin multiplying army!"

and thats where i sold it three days later..

FEAR was also a terrible disapointment for the PS3, very blank environment...and Alma is just plain everywhere, it loses the scare factor of the game...so that means theres only two other factors the devlopers can list that make this game good...advanced AI, and bullet time...

Tiberian Sun was one of the first game I got really hyped about before release, it seemed like PC Gamer had a preview article in just about every issue. In the end it fell short on a lot of the promises.

Fallout 3, I was one of the old Fallout fans actually optimistic about the game up until I saw some gameplay videos and later tried it for myself. I just don't think the Bethesda formula suits the franchise that well (I was optimistic because I believed Bethesda were flexible enough to make it feel more different from Oblivion).

I remember all the ruckus over Donkey Kong Country and how it was the most amazing thing ever, insane review scores all over the place. I didn't own a SNES at the time and first played it a few years later, and found it be a really mediocre platform game.

And most recently Starcraft 2. I think the game itself is a bit too conservative. That doesn't make it a big let down all by itself, I was planning on getting it to just casually play with some friends every now and then. But the multiplayer region lock destroyed my remaining motivation for buying it.

ME: 2
CoD MW: 2
Hearts of Iron 3

Those are the main two off the top of my head, I really don't play many games, I just stick with the online part of my favourites or massive RPGs

Planescape: Torment is probably going to be dissapointing by the time I finally buy it, nothing could live up to the expectations I have for that game.

Halo 3. The series was going down hill with Halo 2, I was hoping that they would return to form with Halo 3 but they didn't, they put all their efforts into the MP and left the story line to wilt on the vine. Seriously, it felt like they tacked on the story as an after thought.

Age of Empires III. To understand why I was so disappointed you have to know why I love and consider Age of Empires II one of my all time favorite games. I remember learning so much from Age of Empires II when I played it. The campaigns all had these wonderful "cutscene" sort of deals at the beginning and end of each mission that was like a short narration of what was going on, to really color and set the tone before you jumped into the actual game. It was masterfully made and voiced, and contained all sorts of actual historical information while making you feel like you were right there.

Then Age of Empires III came. I was pumped for it. How could I not be? I loved AoE2, I really enjoyed AoM, and I didn't need anybody to tell me whether or not to get the game. I returned it to the store within days. Yes. I managed to get Best Buy to take back an opened PC game for store credit it was so bad.

AoE3 shoveled out a trite and cliche, poorly written, fantasy fiction campaign about some made up family, some made up secret cult, and a made up fountain of youth. It didn't contain even a sliver of actual historical basis to any of the campaign missions, and the rest of the game (units, buildings, civilizations) seemed to be a caricature.

It also didn't help that they took away lots of useful features, like unit formations. But that's just nitpicking. :P

STALKER Shadow of chernobyl might be another one for me. Same with both Deus Ex games. I just couldn't get into them at all, yet everyone highly praises them. Good thing they were cheap on Steam when I got them all. I did give STALKER a few good tries but never got more then about 20 minutes in before stopping and not coming back to it. Not sure exactly what it was about these games but even when they were new I justc ouldn't get into them enough to play through.

Thief 3.

Worst voice acting, ever! Between the "Mae West" fence, the guards who talked like 1930s era movie thugs (the "Knuckle Sandwich" line was painfully bad), and the pagans general awfulness, Thief 3 reigned supreme as the worst voice acting in gaming history... until Two Worlds came out, which tied it for first place.

Nintendo Wii. I love the thing, as I have just about every other Nintendo system, but the lack of third-party support is just a shame. It'll be getting a lot of use starting next week with Metroid: Other M, going all the way into early next year, but developers other than Nintendo need to hop to it dammit.

Regenerating health. What the heck happened to the good old health pack? Most FPS these days are glorified Whac-A-Mole games with a pretty, brown paintjob. You pop up to a barrage of fire from unlimited spawning enemies, crouch until your sissy bar is full and then you do it all again. Health packs required actual aim and tact, you run out of packs because you played the game wrong and you died.

Assassins creed. It was just repetitive, assassinations felt very much the same, not many weapons just a sword, dagger, throwing knives. It wasn't even nearly as good of an assassination game as hitman blood money.

Unreal Tournament 3. I generally read up on games before I rent or buy them so I'm never really disappointed, but I guess I didn't read up on UT3 enough because I was completely blindsided by it. I was not prepared for a single player campaign that was, really, just a couple dozen multiplayer game modes, but with AI as the enemies instead of real people. I finished it but man am I glad I rented it. I wouldn't say it was terrible, but... just really disappointing.

Also, Shadowrun. I let myself get convinced by a friend to buy it with him and a few other friends while it was cheap at Gamestop. The theory was that we could all play the multiplayer together. But, again, I didn't read up on the game enough and didn't realize that there was absolutely no single player campaign. All there was was about 6 tutorials that you could do that would teach you the basics of the multiplayer, which was the whole point of the game. I didn't know that. And I also didn't know that the multiplayer pretty much svcked. The game wasn't even good for achievements, as all of the achievements were either impossible or took way too much time to do.

My biggest gaming letdowns are Metal Gear Solid 2, Hitman 2 and Deus Ex 2. Since then I haven't really had any letdowns.
