Gaming Nostalgia

Post » Tue Aug 17, 2010 10:10 pm

Felt this would be a fun thing to try. We all have those games from years ago that were simply the greatest things ever. The games that were so good that for some reason nothing in recent memory has touched them. Problem is, we haven't played said games for the longest time. Well maybe it is time to give them another spin for old times sake. Why not relieve all of those classic memories yet again? I suggest that anyone who would like to participate in this to pull out some of their old systems, maybe pull out their old pc-cd roms and give their old classics another play through. Make a list of favorite games from at least 10 years ago, post them in this thread, and then go play some games. On the off chance that they aren't quite the same experience that you remember post your opinions. If they are just as fun now as they were then, let us know. As for me, my games are listed below

- Road rash series (genesis, n64)
- Hexen (64)
- Wave Race (64)
- Snow Board Kids (64)
- Banjo-Kazooie series (64)
- Harvest moon (64)
- dragon warrior: monsters (gb)
- Original Pokemon series (gb)
- Mystical Ninja: Starring Geomon (64)
- Turok series (64)
- Star Fox (64)
- Super Mario world (snes)
- Zombies ate my neighbors (snes)

There are a few more, but these are the close to my hearts from my younger days, and ones that I know I still have lying around. I excluded the n64 Zelda series seeing as how I still play those on a regular basis and already know I still love them. So yes, if anyone else would like to try this great. Let's have some fun, and hopefully our memories hold up. Sorry for the flood of topics by the way, just realized this is my third active thread on the first page. I will slow down for a while, promise.

I tried playing Baldur's Gate II, again. The game is certainly the same, but I haven't made much progress and really am not too interested, for some reason. So, that's something that I'd say hasn't held up too well. I also tried playing Spyro: Ripto's Revenge, again. It didn't interest me much, but the feeling is the same. I think it's more that, even after all this time, I've still played the games so much that I'm just not interested, anymore.

It's almost a tradition for me that I go back and play some of the old SNES and PSX classics once every couple of years. Games like Super Metroid, Zelda 3, Final Fantasy VI, Castlevania SOTN, Wild Arms... All of those are definitely still very fun and engaging games, even by today's standards. Especially by today's standards.

Games that don't? Breath of Fire comes to mind. I have lots of fond memories of playing through that game but it's really lacking in the gameplay department and the story feels tacked on. More or less a chore to play. I can't really think of many others. A great game is a great game, no matter how old it is.

Now that I have a functioning CD/DVD drive again I think I might go through some of my old PC games and see if there are any gems in there.

Nostalgia's an odd thing: a lot of games were great when I initially played them, but looking at even something as comparatively recent as Morrowind a couple of months ago I really couldn't get back into it; I suspect that anything I played in the '80s and '90s really isn't going to stand the test of time. Some fond memories, but that's probably what they should remain as it was a different era of my life...

If I had to make a choice between my Sega Genesis and modern games, I'd gladly forfeit all games of this decade.

I'm honestly a bit spoiled with the smooth gameplay of newer titles.
The graphics and gameplay mechanics does not bother me at all, all that makes me twitch around is if the game is clunky as [censored].
Luckily most of my beloved old games still hold their ground as awesome.

So my nostalgia for the games hold true.
One thing I find funny is the old games that had that fancy new graphics in gameplay or in CGI cutscenes, then when playing it again in this day and age I go like "Wow, "that" was good graphics?"

I was over at my son's house yesterday for his 29th birthday, and what did he have up the screen?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swords_of_Chaos

I've never played it, but he's played it since he was a teenager. It was a rush of nostalgia just watching him, being familiar with the looks of the colored text lines on the screen. It's a text based BBS game for crying out loud! I guess it's still somewhat popular with a certain exclusive group.

Kinda OT, but I got to play Red Dead Redemption for the first time on his PS3.....I wish it was on PC, because it's practically the only non-Bethesda game I'm even slightly interested in.

Never cared for the way a lot of folks write off past generations as if everyone is seeing the past through rose-tinted glasses. Not only do I have clear memories of what games were like when I was little, but I still play quite a few of 'em and those memories have held up just fine.

Ys III: Wanderers from Ys is the only game that comes to mind that I liked 10+ years ago but wouldn't touch now. Bleh.

My brother being an avid collector of old school games, I usually play my childhood games on a regular basis. Games back then were some much more awesome than games now.

My examples:
Banjo Kazooie N64 > Nuts and Bolts 360
Goldeneye N64 > Goldeneye Wii
Zombies ate my Neighbors SNES > Left 4 Dead 360
The Legend of Zelda NES > Twilight Princes Wii/Gamecube
Indiana Jones' Greatest Adventures SNES > Uncharted 360

Hell Doom is still fun to play. :)

Indeed, just finished the Eternal Doom mod, still as impressive and difficult as it was the first time. Playing Doom every few months keeps my reaction times up ^_^

I used to love Fort Apocalypse on I think it was the Commodore 64, would I play it now, no way whatsoever.

Is anyone as ancient as me, and remember a weird game on the Commodore PET. You were a stick man at the bottom of the screen, and you released a balloon to hit whatever was going past, and if you hit something, the stickman went "BANZAI! MUGYU!"

Oh Commander Keen. How I had to learn MSDOS prompts to play you.

I'd go back and play Roller Coaster Tycoon in a heartbeat. "Oh, I'm sorry poor visitor. You don't like my park? ISLAND OF TORTURE FOR YOU!!! MUWAHAHAHA!!! Oh, I'm sorry. I forgot to finish the roller coaster before opening it. FLY INTO OBLIVION!!! AAAAHAHAHAHAA!!"

If I were to play the same games that I grew up playing, then I'd be playing Pong, Pac Man, Space Invaders, and Donkey Kong. It's not that I think they were bad games, more likely that so many years (more like decades) have passed, that while some may be considered classics now, they just don't stand the test of time for me anymore. Those games were great in their day, and I have fond memories of spending lots of time and quarters (yes I was mainly an arcade gamer) playing those games, but I just can't bring myself to play them again for any length of time.

Maybe you've just overplayed them?

While I think that for anyone who just wants to list some of their childhood favorites or state their feelings about the subject of nostalgia in the form of older games, thats fine. The real meaning behind this thread, for those who want to participate anyway, was to actually put those memories to the test and actually see if the games held up, then posting your experience. It is fine if the thread simply goes the route its taken, but it doesn't seem like anyone really got the concept behind this thread.

Like I state above I don't expect people to just participate and leave it open, but it doesn't seem like anyone really got the concept behind this thread.

I played Baldurs Gate a couple of months ago, and yes, it's still as good, actually better since I understand more of it now.

If I wasn't busy with Risen and Planescape Torment I'd play Deus Ex too.
But I got like 9 games queued so Deus Ex will have to wait.
... Well... Then we have Skyrim and Saints Row 3 which will come out....
Then we have Dead Island....
Guess Deus Ex will be played in late 2012 then.

I still play those older games on a regular basis, and not only have they held the test of time, but they are better than most of the new stuff that comes out... IMO at least.

I love the nostalgia of older games, but it's the simpler ones I tend to enjoy more. The earlier versions of dialouge trees in RPG's for example could be tedious (arg Redguard) but the ones I really love are the old cheesey Apogee games like Cosmo, Monster Bash, Duke Nukem 2, Commander Keen, and those. Awesome old platformers. And I will always have a soft spot in my heart for TES1:Arena.

3 games I still play from the past millennium and I still love playing, in chronological order

1.- Galaga, arcade.
I had the highest score on that thing at the arcade in Escondido, Ca. I'd play for hours on one quarter. Nowadays every time I see it, I just had to drop a quarter.

2.- The Legend Of Zelda: Link's Awakening, GameBoy.
Best Zelda ever. Matter of fact, one of the best video games ever.

3.- System Shock ("no, really?" :) ), PC.
I am referring to the original 1995 release. First game I remember that successfully combined RPG with FPS. Set many of the standards we see in gaming today.

Honorable mention goes to Sins of the Fathers, The Beast Within, Black Dhalia.
