Pc gaming slowly dies....

Post » Sun Feb 08, 2009 1:00 am

RE: George Broussard - What a cop-out. 99% of other first person shooters manage to figure it out and i really don't forsee Duke having special buttons set aside for magic spells so it really doesn't make sense.

Name me one console game that has a controller based weapon limitation and i'll name twenty that don't. If they can't figure it out with 15+ buttons (doesn't include anologue movement) then they're doing it wrong.

This thread seems to have de-railed a little since the article in the OP is talking about first person shooters dying, which doesn't add up when you consider there are more people playing now than ever before. I guess this is on the back of Halo: Reach being released.

I don't see PC gaming being under any threat at all, especially when you look at genres that have typically been extremely strong on PC and terrible on consoles, i.e. RTS and MMO.

Yeah, apologies for the de-rail.

You raise a good point about RTS/MMO something of which i believe consoles have tried in the past (RTS) and i don't think they've been received well. On the other hand, you have monumental games like WoW which was pushing over 10 million subscribers back in 2008 and i believe it was still climbing.
If a game goes to console (and the PC has the care and attention it needs and isn't just a console port) then it just means a wider audience, a bigger community, and better chances for a sequel of even higher quality.
Thats right, but multiplayer is even more important than singleplayer (because you play it for longer time) and going to consoles seems to mean consolise gameplay, which is so very bad/lame thing. I hope it won't happen with Crysis 2, because it could be the best FPS game ever if you keep Crysis 1 gameplay style. Thats why people are pissed about going to consoles.

What Tom said. I too am sick of these "PC gaming is dying" non-sense. Sure, OK, it's not going to be around forever, but it's certainly not dying yet or any time in the near future. That Tsunoda guy is an idiot. Where's his source on this? What stats does he have? Are those stats reliable? More importantly, does he even have any stats? Has he even seen a glimpse of any stats on this?

Don't listen to some random idiots. Anyone who tells you that PC gaming is dead already is just full of ****.

That is all.
Since when is PC Gaming dying?

Somebody might want to see these stats, which are just a SMALL sliver of the community.

http://tinyurl.com/2v46a72 (Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare)

http://tinyurl.com/2wkcbd4 (Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2)

http://tinyurl.com/yc3nsvr (Battlefield: Bad Company 2)

A sliver of the Battlefield: Bad Company 2 competitive community:

http://tinyurl.com/3x2mg8b

And then there are the games that didnt turn out to popular....

http://www.xfire.com/games/crysiswh/Crysis_Warhead/ (tinyurl wouldnt work)

Obviously though, these stats that are just a small sliver of the PC community, clearly show that PC Gaming isnt leaving any time soon.
Which is exactly what I said? -.-

I can BET in 2020 there will be more PC gamers than console gamers... You see, the avg. quality of life and people's incomes are growing, meaning they can afford a PC better. At that moment, they understand that a PC is more useful than a console.

They would sell casual parts for the web-based audience and server-high end parts for the graphics editing/server/high end computing.

The only company out of that list i could see going bankrupt would be Alienware. AMD, Intel, and Nvidia could all adapt easily for the situation.

BTW: PC-game (sales) are still the biggest. If games are released on consoles and PC's the numbers may suggest something else but looking at the total (sale) PC wins by far. I don't know the number anymore, I read that once but I believe that if you would take the total (sale) of all console games (all the consoles together) then still the PC won by far. I put the "sale" between () because it was calculated different. This has to do with the popularity of MMORPG games. I think they look at the number of people playing a game where they pay for at any time. so that not exactly "sales". But people buy a MMORPG once and play it for years while somebody buys a console game and plays it maybe a year or shorter depending on the MP. Taking those thing in account the PC winds by far.

However, The problem with console-games is that as soon as games become available for consoles they need to be suitable for a bigger group. So suddenly you get a more brainless game (apparently the mass likes that) with bad story-lines, nu ‘soul’ and much easier (but a lot of commerce around the game). When was the last time you was "stuck" in a game? The console people don't even know that term because the games from now are so easy that you will not get stuck in them. Some years ago you where talking with a friend about where in the game you was stuck. And where are the ammo packs is so many games? At least Crysis has the suit to explain it but in a lot of other games the player cures miraculously. Why can’t I save when I want? And of course suddenly the feel / handle of the games also becomes pretty terrible.

AMD and Nvidia wouldn't go out of business but they make gpu's for consoles, AKA, the 360 and the ps3 respectively.

It will probably continue that way until companies decide to kick them to the curb, but that will probably not happen for a while.

The last game I got stuck in was Far Cry 2. ;)

And yes, the ammunition in other ganes tend to appear out of nowhere, and its the same issue with Crysis. I don't see my Nanosuit player wearing any vests to hold ammunition, or weapons strapped across his back. Their should be ammunition pouches, grenade pouches, and weapons strapped across the players back.

All Points Bulletin only lasted 3 months before the studio went bankrupt. :(

Also, the microsoft comment was regarding First Person Shooters. In a way he is right, but he is also wrong. PC Gamers dont buy **** games, if you make a quality game on the PC, then many people buy it and play it. A great example of the biggest PC shooter so far this year is Battlefield: Bad Company 2. While it is a console port, it has unmistakeable PC only features like 32 players and DX11...If only DICE was better with patching though. :O
