so...who here works on MERP?

Not me, never got deep enough into TES modding to get involved with any teams (due to busy modding projects on other games).

I wonder if those guys will be working on Skyrim...

Eh, Glor-"killed a frickin' balrog"-findel (cruelly cut from the film version of LotR - if it was the same elf) is more my style. Or maybe Túrin (killed a frickin' dragon); badass, despite how horrifically unlucky he was. Or Bombadil and his merry Thu'um...

But Middle Earth nerdism aside, I agree that having the option to toss fireballs from a staff in one hand, and swing Glamdring a sword in the other, is really cool.

Glorfindel only killed one Balrog (I think) solo, it was with the Golden Legion (or somesuch) he did most of his Balrog Pwning

I must say, killing just 1 balrog and not dying is quite the feat. Most die along with it at best.

And if you absolutly HAD to make a portable object, why not a Guantlet instead? The ring was unbreakable by conventional means, and Isildur only cut off his finger. Make a guantlet out off the stuff and It would have just bounced off. make it look like the rest of your amour and you're set for life.

I'm assuming The One Underpant to rule them all wouldn't work too well?

There can't be that many tales of Balrog-slaying, there were only 7 weren't there?

Would have been ruined once it went to the wash, and wearing dirty underwear will just repel everyone from you. Even your own forces will abandon you!

King Hlaalu Helseth, I'm still fuzzy on the numbers bits when it comes to balrogs. Early in the book, I imagined more than 7 came to Melkor's help when he was having a bad day with a certain spider.

Turin is your man, that guy was proper Dragonborn, especially with Umbra, sorry, I mean the Black Sword.

Perhaps...

but how often do you think the citizens of Mordor bathe, anyway?

It'll be fun to be able to create real wizards this time. Wizards need beards. Especially in Skyrim.
Hopefully, the body will match the age...at least a little bit. Then again, it's great to roam around a frozen wasteland shirtless, showing your 70 years old six-packs and hurling fireballs at dragons. :)

Except for the incist bit, his life full of misery, everywhere he went tended to get burned to the ground at best, and so on.

Either way, the One Undergarment to rule them all will eventually become unusable.

I'm only pointing out he was just 1 step away from becoming a follower of Nurgle.

No, but most of them did not live on Middle Earth, they lived in a higher dimension (i think), but a few got stuck in Middle Earth

@Hellmouth, Glorfindel DID die but he was sent back to life

Well it looks like I need to start rereading again. Elvish names tend to eventually look and sound the same, especially since the whole book is covered with very similarish elvish names

Eh, a Guantlet is better then Underpants. You can fire laser out of Guantlets with power. You COULD possivly with underpants, but if it backfired the result would be painfull. Plus, no matter how powerfull you are, you are still gonna get mocked for having a crocth laser.

When Tolkien first started writing about middle earth, he envisaged thousands of Balrogs, as captains of the Orcs, and near the end of his life he said there were no more than seven, and yet you hear complaints about discrepancies in Elder Scrolls lore.

Yep, but it's still quite a feat for him being "just" an elf (Gandalf really struggled with the one encountered in Moria, and he was a Maia after all). And Glorfindel routed the Witch King and his army at some point, and was the one to make the prophecy concerning his later destruction at the hands of éowyn, IIRC.

He was also glowy, and frightened the ringwraiths... he had some serious varliance going on.

If there were only seven, how many did Feanor defeat? Doesn't The Simarillion say he killed several before Gothmog wounded him?

And also, Sauron was second to Morgoth only in that he once served another. I think he probably could have taken a Vala one-on-one and held his own for some time, if it was a fair fight. But even Morgoth was clumsy at best against more than one Vala. The best he ever did was eff up Arda.
At any rate, he certainly could have crushed Gandalf.

I have read somewhere that Balrogs are Maiar, and they live in a higher realm, like Gandalf, Saruman, Radagast, they came into Middle Earth, so only seven remain in Middle Earth

They were Maiar before Morgoth corrupted them, certainly. I only wonder if they could still exist in a higher realm after becoming Balrogs.
Also, the internet says that in The Lay of the Children of Hurin it's written that they "existed in hundreds". That makes more sense to me, since we don't know how many could still be hiding or locked up in the ruins of Angband, and at least seven were killed in the books, right?
There must be a list of every Balrog killed SOMEWHERE on the internet...

My dad was a Ringwraith in Genesis for several years and would certainly say that Tolkein, the "Liar Scribe", lied about the number of Balrogs to make them seem weaker and less numerous. So who knows.

More like Saruman, probably.

A Balrog is a corrupted Fire Maiar. While Gandalf is a Maiar that is still on the side of the Valar.

Didn't lots of Balrogs help Melkor when he fought Ungoliant? My Middle Earth lore is very rusty though.

Yes, the Balrogs sided with Melkor, they went and hid in Angband after Ungoliant won though
