No Gas on April 15th

Post » Tue Feb 01, 2011 9:22 pm

True, but there's a difference between public rioting and a bunch of Hipsters sitting in Starbucks with daddies trust fund going 'Yeah, that'll show those corporate pigs. We're protesting them on Facebook for like, one whole day man.' -swishes scarf-

Of course, but recent events have shown that social media can be powerful tool too.

Not that it means i'll be joining Facebook anytime soon :P

I'm not sure if this has been said or not but, I know (at least in Maryland) there is one day a year where people aren't suppose to get gas, it supposedly lowers the price by a few cents for the next few days. But I'm not sure if thats just in the State of Maryland or just America or whatever but maybe this even has something to do with it?
But if it is a "stick to the man" kind of thing then their not too bright, the price of gas is high either because they need to be in order for the company to make profit or because they're greedy. Either way, I don't think a face book event is going to do anything.

I think the futility of it all is in the long term then short term.

Sure everyone can and probably will, purposely not get gas that day. And sure, some companies will take notice while sitting in their oil-rig shaped mansions on their thrones of diamonds infused with baby souls.

And hell, apparently back in 1997 this worked and gas dropped a few cents the next day. But with the [censored] goin down in the East don't you think eventually gas will just go back up slowly to compensate, not only for the increase because of the situation over there, but to also compensate for lost money on the 15th?

Yeah, avoid purchasing gas on one specific day to make a stand, because OH MY WHAT WILL WE DO WITH THE SPOILED GAS?

Seriously, want to make a statement? Purchase a hybrid vehicle, ride a bike, take public transportation if possible, plan your route.
Don't purchase bottled water unless your tap water is undrinkable. Use glass or ceramic to refrigerate and microwave, carry cloth grocery bags, puchase locally grown foodstuffs, recycle those two litre bottles and milk cartons.
Plastic is made from petroleum, industrial farming requires large amounts of petroleum for...growing, transporting, fertilizing. If you really want to stick it to oil companies, a lifestyle change is the only way.

Oil has been in the earth's crust for millions of years, it's not going to go bad, If we don't purchase any on one day, it only affects gas station owners for that day, It's not going to affect companies who have already sold it to gas stations.

What I found odd, was that seemingly a decent amount of people who joined the group didn't actually own cars... that is what I gathered from people posting on the group wall.

"Omg, totally gonna cuz I don't have a car lol". or "I support this even though I don't own a car, but just because of the principle of it."

I don't get it, and these were the people who responded to my "questioning of the point" of the group.

Yesterday our gas was up to $4.60/gal at our nearest station. It amazes me that Alaska produces so much oil, pipes it out and still we pay so much more than anywhere else in the USA. Not only that but it takes me a quarter tank of gas to go buy gas.

Lucky for me, I had 500 gal. delivered just before the gas went up so I can just fill up at home and maybe wait out the price surge. Not sure. And another lucky for me is that every Alaskan will profit from it in the way of dividends in a couple of years. :twirl:

I should perhaps adjust that with "or ride a bike." I know people who ride thirty-plus miles per day in gridlock for work commute. They do it in China more than not. I know it isn't everyone's cup o' tea, but it doesn't restrict you to a small community to seek mode of transportation that don't use fossil fuels.

Well in china (at least in the cites) most bikes got replaced by motorcycles and cars and less and less people use bicycles. Bikes work if you live in a small town or if you work in a office in the small town.

Do you have any refineries? If not, that'd be why (the usable fuels would still need to be shipped back).

I will explain this to you... It is a DAY where people that are really dumb enough to think that a DAY of not getting gas is actually going to do something. They aren't actually willing to not buy gas for a week because that would actually complicate their life. A day is comfortable for them, so thats all they are going to do. So basically its a bunch of people who think they are doing something that are only doing it because it won't complicate their life at all.

Just checked. As of this post there are 344,394 people "attending" this event.

With 179,379 not attending and still 2,391,156 "awaiting reply". :P

Its a bunch of garbage. Cause like it has been said already. People will fill up the day before.

If you really want to make an impact with the oil company do something crazy. Like I did.

I shut my oil fired furnace down completely this season. I've been heating my home with coal. The look on the guys face was priceless when he came to fill my tank at the beginning of the season only to realize, my tank was full from the last delivery I got last season. When I was asked who I got my oil from I said I didn't. Then explained to him that burning coal was warmer, lasts longer and is a hell of a lot cheaper than oil. Not to mention cleaner. He had no reply. Just walked away.

My house has been 80+ all winter. My coal stove has been burning strong since I fired it up in early October. 1 match, 1 fire. Its never gone out.

Needless to say, I won't be buying home heating oil ever again. Especially since 1 ton of coal lasts me a month and a half at $290. Last year, I was $2K in oil for the season. It's now March and I'll be shutting down for Spring/Summer in a week or two and I've spent $900 to heat my home with coal.

Who Dares Wins.

So again, you want to hurt the oil company? Stop heating your home with it.
