A frightening thought has plagued my mind. It is ineveitable that all great things must come to an end. What happens when TES series ends? How will it end and when will it end?

Then I just play with the older installment and mod it just for the heck of it. If it end, then it end, but the game remains.

What will it be like though, and when do you think the end will be?

not this again... anyways, the elder scrolls will end, but thats like 50 years in the future. eventuall theres gonna be a ps6 or an xbox 1440 with enough memory for all of tamriel, in which beth will make a fantastic game with every province, and they will continue to patch and add things to the game. when the elder scrolls is gone beth is going to roll over on their backs and wait for the apocalypse.... probably

There's very little chance that The Elder Scrolls will truely end any time in the near future. For whatever reason, should Bethesda stop making TES games, then some other developer will buy the license to continue development on the series.

Only Bethesda can make it right. What if another company changes the series like Bethesda changed Fallout?

Most likely it would occur like any other series ends. They make a new game and either:
A. The company goes bust
B. They make another game that ends up being popular and they switch to a new series
or C. They make a horrific installment that ends up crashing and burning and they retire the series

Very rarely do they "Finish" a story.

I can remember the first year I played Morrowind worrying that Bethesda had made a serious business mistake in making a game I could play for the rest of my life. ;-)

Have you ever played the MGS series? MGS4 signalled the end of everything MGS Solid Snake and Big Boss die, these two icons were the heart of the MGS series, much weeping has been done however the series lives on, a new icon has potential Raiden, the series will live on but will feel differently, TES will never end, it may change, but it won't end.

If we do see a true end (like the end of the main series and no TESA's) then it will probably end with Lorkhan's return. He'll pwn some elves and that loser Akatosh, then achieve CHIM (like he set out to do in the first place), then either reshape reality to his will, or continue on in Tamriel as it is, with him as the sole god.

:biglaugh:
And that's the truth.

TES as a numbered series will probably end with the Godhead waking up and everyone, from mortal all the way up to et'ada and IS-IS NOT realizing they're just fragments of a schizophrenic dream.
And ceasing to exist in that realization.

And it turns out the Godhead is Richard Simmons. And you get to play as him for one "battle" where he makes sure those ladies do their aerobics.

Or it's just some random Joe who wakes up and says, "****, that was one screwed up dream." He goes into his kitchen, where his wife is making breakfast and he askes if "we're having mudcrab for breakfast?" His looks at him like he's lost his wits. "I meant cherrios."

Also, with the CS, entire games can be made using it. Well, not entire games, but darn near close.

people say the apocolypse will come in 2012 --- but no, it will come when the elder scrolls stop being written

but maybe they will just make a comic book series or something... or ill make a cheap knock off of tes called "The Elderer Scrolls" --- or going off my own idea all the fans could make their own game piecing together the lore etc etc

Naturally, the Elder Scrolls series must "end" at some point. Though this probably won't be a definite "This is the end, there will be no more games after it." likely at some point, after the last game wraps up its plot, another game just won't be made, maybe the series won't be popular anymore, maybe Bethesda will go out of business, and no one will pick the series up. Maybe Bethesda will decide that the series has gone on long enough, and it's time to move on to something else. Either way, though, one can simply play other games instead. If it's any more comforting, one can also think of it this way, if the Elder Scrolls series keeps going on indefinitely, at some point, the game will come to a point where Bethesda has run out of ideas. If it comes to that point, it would be better to just let dead horses lie and instead focus turn the focus to franchises that still have potential to do something new without angering the fans, or even start new franchises.

I think Bethesda's acquiring of the Fallout series will really help extend the life of the TES series. Artificially, of course. If Bethesda does the reasonable thing and rotates making a TES game, then a Fallout game, then a TES game, over and over again every couple of years, we probably wouldn't see an end to either series for decades to come.

But once Bethesda finishes up with Tamriel, which they eventually will, they could always make games in the other continents of the elder scrolls world. I don't know if what I just said is taboo or something, because I have a strange feeling it is, but that could help extend the series a lot either way.

And as others have said, as long as there is a construction kit, it will never truly end. The last game in the elder scrolls series, whenever it is made, will likely be a game beyond our wildest gamer imaginations, seeing as we can't imagine what video games will be like decades from now. But if there is a construction kit, the fans can use the huge amount of resources in the game to mod the game for the rest of eternity, if they so choose.
