Gauldur Amulet disappointment

Post » Thu Jun 07, 2012 5:40 am

This has been bothering me for some time now. In skyrim I like to play as a mage so typically all mage related stories intrigues me a great deal. After competing the Forbidden Legend quests several times now I became irritated about how weak the Gauldur Amulet is. Only 30 percent eh? This Amulet is suppose to be the cause of 3 greedy sons to wand up murdering Archmage Gauldur, their father, to obtain the Amulet for themselves. After the Archmage death King Horald ordered a man hunt of battlemages to kill the 3 sons.

So after having to defeat the 3 sons you get the Gauldur Amulet. Which has 30 points increase in Magic/Stamina and health. Isn't that tad bit weak?

No it's not weak. If you like to play as a mage then use the Necromancers Amulet instead.

I was disappointed to.. Also this quest made me angry because this is where i lost Jzargo to the ghosts of the 3 sons.
Also i accidently saved the game and i couldn't go back to the other save at all. So i had to carry on....

The other option was to reload the game when i was level 11
And when during that quest i was level 21
Oh well. Things happen...

But yeah i feel like i struggled all the way for nothing. This amulet is useless and weak... Too weak to me lol. I exected it to be a bit more powerful....

How are 9 level-ups worth of health, magicka, and stamina weak?

Funny how I thought that was a good amulet at some point. It depends when you achieve it and if you've invested on enchanting or not. You can definitely make something better yourself at 100 enchanting, or buy/find better things at higher levels. But at around level 15, it's still powerful.

At first I looked at the 30 points and thought the same thing. But it’s 90 points of useful in one piece of jewelry for characters who need health, magicka, and stamina. Most of my characters are hybrid types who have their stats spread out over all three.

Thirty-percent is hardly weak. I agree, though. It's more of a trophy than anything else. Personally, I added a mod that let's you wear unlimited amulets and rings. Thus, I can wear the Galdur Amulet plus a Talos amulet. I try to limit myself to two amulets and four rings.

I use Artifact Balance Overhaul which fortifies all by 40 and adds +25% one-handed and +25% destruction.

9 level-ups is great early on, but these fights are very tough for low-level players. At later levels, the amulet isn't very worthwhile.

I didn't really care either way, I just chucked it in a drawer and let it sit.

if you do the quests at a low level you really benefit from the amulet.

i cannot consider a 30 point raise in all 3 attributes lame.

It also seems to be invisible. Is there any fix for that?

I got it at level 15 on my most recent character. It was very tough, the final fight had me reload about 4 times and try different strategies. With 3 fortifies on it, it's been simply amazing. (Tip to keep your follower alive: have him wait just inside the final fight chamber, go to the altar and trigger the first fight and then sprint back to your follower so that everything has to come over to you and you will have several seconds of attacking at range on your side.)

It's perfectly reasonable. Niamh has been wearing it 4 a while now. I think its a nicely done story to he honest. If you have companions and you lose then that's really your fault for being careless. If you don't like the amulet then sell it.

If you do this quest really early on in the game, its actually a great thing to have for a mage player if you got straight to the college from the beginning.

I didn't look that way just considering it a + to my warrior who really needed it at that moment. So I was really happy. But yes, you are right: 9 free levels!

There should be some lore telling why it is diminished from its former power.

The amulet itself isn't the problem... it's the challenge level of the quest leading up to getting it. You have to beat 3 pretty hard bosses and then beat their ghosts, too. The reward hardly seems worth the work it took to get there.

I think it's pretty useless. Sure, the buffs are ok, but what warrior needs 30 magicka? And what mage needs 30 stamina? I'd rather have a strong health regen amulet any day.

I think that depends on what you want.
If you're reward-driven in the way you play then maybe you'll want more - (but then you'll always want more?) - if you are of the opinion that the journey is in many ways more important than the destination then I don't see it's a problem. Niamh has been wearing it since she got it, and I think it's a really useful piece of kit and the whole quest line to get it was a lot of "fun" to do, and challenging to.
That's obviously my opinion and I can't speak for your subjective experience...
