Gays/lisbians in the Fallout Universe

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 2:57 am

Are there gays or lisbians in the Fallout universe? I haven't seen anything or read anything while playing Fallout 3 that hinted towards it. Also if they were gays/lisbians how were they treated pre-great war and after?

There is a point in Fallout 2 where you can get married (A shotgun wedding). There is a brother and sister who's father can catch you attemting to get closer to them. Selecting the one of the alternative six results in a wedding (unless you talk your way out of it), selecting the same results in a hostile father.

Other than that, I'm not aware of anything on this train of thought, other than a few prosttutes turning chicks down.

My best guess is that 1950's sensibilities apply - Closeted, steriotypical, and the stuff of gossip. "Normal" is Mum/Mom, Dad, and 2.3 Kids and no deviations exist.

(Note, this is only my opinion of the in game/universe possibilities, and does not represent my real world view)

Developers have confirmed bothmale and female strippers in New Vegas, as well as the option to select a prosttute of either gender regardless of the PCs.

I can't recall, in any Fallout I've played, NPC's regularly bringing up their sixual orientation to my character. Also, doesn't regularly come up in real life. So, who is to say?

The only way you can tell in game is if it comes up. Even then, it is generally inferred and not necessarily true. Even prosttutes could be of a different sixual orientation while still selling their services to whoever is willing to pay. Afterall, prostitution is a job and means to earn money. For the most part, it doesn't seem to be brought up much in Fallout. Doesn't particularly bother me, the same way not knowing every NPC's political views doesn't bother me. In the overall scheme of things, it is relatively insignificant.

Most likely, yes, they are in the Fallout universe, but don't feel it necessary to advertise as such.

It's been awhile since I played a female character in FO2 but I am sure you can still have fun ;) with the ladies at the Cats Paw and other bathhouses..

And francisthemutant has posted that both six will be strippers in New Vegas.

There is also a Male super mutant in Broken Hills that will have six with you no matter what your six is.

As for openly gay, I can't think of any example.

Isn't Flak and Shrapnel gay?
And I think Tulip is bi-sixual.
Then we have Carol and Greta, lisbians.
And we have one of the mob bosses daughter or mother who's bi-sixual as well.
Haven't tried to do a six-oriented character in fallout 1 so I dunno anyone from there.

I think they're just business partners
And I think Tulip is bi-sixual.

I think you mean Buy-sixual.
Then we have Carol and Greta, lisbians.

Its implied, but not definateively said. The Vault suggests it could also be a mother-daughter relationship
And we have one of the mob bosses daughter or mother who's bi-sixual as well.

Mrs Bishop will indeed (Miss Bishop wont) have relations with a Female PC.

Kind of agree with you there I mean why would we know and should we care if there are or aren't gays/lisbians in the Fallout Universe?

Really I don't care and don't want to know, but going into this discussion I would say there probably are since each state probably has like 1 to 2 thousand people at most maybe less. Even with there being that little i'm sure out of the 30k to 60k people left in the US there's probably a few people that have those tendencies. *Saying 30 to 60k cause I really have no idea how many people are truly left alive in the US.*

Because they're hot. ;)
I find two gay people talking romantically to each other and my heart just melts.
And if they are on the naughty side then it's really hot.

From a puerly academic point of view, its an interesting question.

In some ways Fallout holds up a mirror to "Who we are" and "Who we were", and by looking at fallouts society we can occasionaly answer a question or two about ourselves.

Most people don't care, but some people perceive literally everything through the prism of thier sixual orientation and if a game/movie/book/TV Show doesn't have openly gay major characters and plotlines they think it's "homophobic". Check out Forums devoted to Star Trek and the Mass Effect series and you'll see what I mean.....some people are very angry thier male Shepard cannot have six with other men.

In FO3 Flak and Shrapnel were gay and lovers.....they neither hid it or flaunted it, they just lived thier lives. Given the number of people in the CW you actually meet, that was probably 20% of the CW's gay population.

All the examples that I can think off the cuff are up there.
We also have for the lack of a better term a polymorphic / androgenous long term partnership in broken hills between two supermutants.

Is it in the universe yes FO2 showed a more overt shag fest side to appoclyptia than 3 did.
Though if we go into if FO was real then the obvious answer is still yes, for the simple reason same six pairings are evident in all aspects of history and nature.

How often we see it in game really is just up to the devs of a particualar game in the series.
Beth tends to leave six as innuendo and minor passages in texts, Obsidian are placing it out in the open if we believe the hype.
So depending on how the NV sales and reviews go, the FO universe may get alot more colourfull, or just leave it upto the players mind too.

There are no openly gay characters in Fallout. Alot of people that go both ways but no one that has said "I am gay." We can speculate all we want about some characters like Flak and Shrapnel but there's no real proof.

Actually Shrapnel has been confirmed that he is gay, I believe that Lee from Tenpenny tower has also been confirmed.
I dout anyone in the fallout universe cares about peoples sixual orintation, they are to busy trying to survive.

Theres no proof or dialogue to imply F&S, I think thats just the fan fic people really wanting that.

As to Ling, before it someone altered my entry. Anthony Ling is implied to be either Gay or Bisixual, as he talks to Gustavo saying how Gustavo is grouchy and that "You woke up on the wrong side of the bed, I can help you wake up on the RIGHT side of the bed" and to which Gustavo says that he's told Ling before that he isnt interested and it'd be a shame if his gun 'accidentaly' went off in Lings direction. I'm not sure WHY my entry was deleted, but the conversation between the two IS in the game. :/

Well I hope incist isn't involved. If it is, however, it's none of my player character's business.

Well, carol and Greta are a couple, have been for years. They're not daughter and mother, carol says she's happy she found her Greta after the war. And that they've been together for going on 60 years now. That sounds like a typical lisbian relationship. Bet they have a ghoul cat too!

Don't know about Flak and Schrapnel, but they do look and sound like an old bear- leather couple.

I think Fallout is a very cool series in that its not homophobic. There's alot of that in games, so its cool to see people just being people, (or ghouls), without judgment or ignorance. Visibility DOES matter.

Well that seems fairly definitive.

As a note: Obs. Mustang- developer on NV, just posted: "I'll add that I'm very proud of F:NV in that we do have characters that are actually gay."

And by that, they mean "everyone in NV is gay". (okay, maybe not everyone, but there's a whole bunch! Gannon, Veronica, an NCR soldier whose name I can't remember...)

Heh heh... it's good to see, though, that different groups of people are getting represented.

Hell, I remember back in Fallout 1... I couldn't even play a BLACK guy. Sure. I'm quite white... but that doesn't mean I don't wanna make a burly black dude, kit him out in a suit of Combat Armor... and give him a Super Sledge.

Diversity is the life of spice...

... er... whatever.

Indeed. I've got no qualms with Homosixuality being represented in the game itself, even if I never explore that particular aspect of the game world. It's nice that it's there, rather then be ignored.
