Gear for mages?

Post » Mon Nov 23, 2009 9:56 pm

One thing I'm really hoping for(yet doubting will be in the game) is to be able change the aesthetics of spell when creating it.This way the starting fireball look won't be the only one.

That's not going to happen in the game, because spell making is not in Skyrim.

In any case, I'd definitely like to see more variety in clothing suited for "pure" mages, aside from the lack of unarmored, the boringness of the default clothes is another reason why in Oblivion, when I made magic using characters they still tended to combine magic with other skills, at the very least, I'd like for not all robes to look like retextures of the same design. I'd also like to be able to wear clothes under robes, I see no legitimate balance reason not to have that in a game with multiple armor and clothing slots, if anything, not having that is bad for balance as it means using robes is a bad idea, and that it's actually better to wear normal clothes.

The world might hear my *SIGH* when I finally accept that there are no cloaks in Skyrim. As for the OP, it'd be nice to have more clothing (certainly more variety than Oblivion had). It was kind of a bummer that all the robes were the same design. I guess that's why I loved the zealot's robe.

What's most important to me as a mage: is there gear that can directly increase your spell damage?

I'd love to see a damage-buffing stat on gear in Skyrim - in oblivion, archers could have agility on their gear, warriors could have strength, but mages could only increase mana.

Layering.

As long as I can wear stuff under my robes, I'm good. Weird little magical affectations are fine and whatever, but phase one is letting my chest slot have more than one thing in it.

I actually have mixed feelings about that. A lot of times I think I'd rather have my briastplate go over the robe that my character is wearing. Other times, I suppose it might be nice to cover up most of the armor to maintain that mage look.

DDO had a good system with this. Everytime you rest at a rest shrine, the magical item would recharge. And it would recharge (but very very slowly, like 1 use every minute) on its own.

I use an Oblivion mod that sets it so that your equipped enchanted item recharges on its own (very slowly though - it depends on willpower, but even with high willpower, it seems to be something around 10 points a minute), and Ayleid Wells will recharge it fully. That makes it a little easier to use an enchanted weapon without having to do the damage + soul trap + Azura's Star routine.

More broadly, just 'cuz I'm thinking about it now, hopefully this is something that Skyrim will handle well. In Morrowind it was a bit too easy to keep an enchanted item charged and in Oblivion it was a bit too hard (unless you did the soul trap + Azura's Star thing - then it was just tedious). Hopefully Skyrim will be just right....

Technically Oblivion already make it so your spells do more damage when wearing clothing, by penalising your spell casting when wearing armour.

I am neutral about damage boosting mage gear, but I DO want better choices of head gear. I was annoyed that there was so few hood choices in Oblivion, and no hats without using a mod.

I mean, I was desperate enough to make my mage look good, that I actually examined every piece of clothing in plain Oblivion on a Wiki. But all the decent looking clothing were robes and dresses, which take up too many clothing spots and are not good enchanting choices.

I like the idea of dyes, at least that means I can finally have clothing that colour-match properly. It annoyed me that my Avatar's vest is a different shade of black to her hood.

I love being a mage in TES games. You can do everything anyone else can do, and more.

But there seemed to be a shortage of mage gear in OB.

Yes, you could enchant clothing, but so can any other character.

I'd like;

Wands, They'd be the daggers of magical weapons. Faster than a staff, but weaker.

Orbs, Held in the off hand, they significantly increase a spell's/spell school's power.

More clothes/robes. The clothes in OB didn't really have the "adventuring wizard" look. And the robes were mostly just recolors of the mage robe.
Something like this would be great for clothing; http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20051217042459/nwn2/images/9/93/PHB35_PG57_WEB.jpg

Spell tomes. They would add spells that you could only use with the tome equipped. Since you can have a spell in each hand, I'd think they'd offer a powerful spell, with less magicka required.
Whippin' out a spell book an melting faces sounds awesome.

I'd also just be happy with more variety in staves and robes.

TL;DR - More items for mages.

Its unlikely that they'll add much more than they did in OB, but a guy can dream.

Any suggestions, what do you want?

i soo agree with you, even the uriel septims robe didnt look all that different from the mage robes, they need more variety, i think a good way to do this would be to create a kind of layerd dressing system in the menu. this would offer a huge ammount of customization

I want a variation of good-looking robes, of course, but also at least separate footwear and headwear - not just hats, but circlets, diadems, etc. Also, they should fix the illogical situation of Obl, where armor and in particular heavy armor was more enchanteable than robes, when it should have been the other way round. Enchantment is a magical skill and mages should get the most out of it, IMHO. Additionally, maybe characters with no armor should be able to equip more (enchanted) rings at once?

I just hope magic effectiveness isn't affected by armor so much. Only gauntlets should lower your magic effectiveness, that's where the magic is coming from. I mean why would your boots or helmet affect spells coming from your hands. Maybe your armor could block self-cast spells. I know it was for balancing but if you have no gauntlets and your using a spell in one or both hands then it should not affect the spells power.

Or even warriors...a nice fur cloak to stay warm in the cold mountains would be cool

I think that's confirmed in the Gamereactor story a while back?

I'd like some unique battlemage armour - something that a normal warrior can not wear

It should be light and flexible and not cover my whole body as i will use magic to shield myself but the armour is for surprise attacks and seeing as i can't back peddle quickly in Skyrim I want a bit more protection

I'd prefer it to elven in style for a more mystical fashion

No more robes - I have to run up and down mountains and i'm not doing that in something that looks like I should be walking in not running in.

My mage doesn't want a wizard hat she wants a simple circlet that contains soul gems to concentrate her magicka and hold a reserve pool of magicka if necessary.

give me some rings that I can see on my fingers

Like others I'm all for more clothes though i want some leathers - why can't bethesda make ranger mage clothing - I want something hard wearing for outdoors but that is as stylish as an assassin yet screams of battle mage

Having your spell casting NOT be horribly penalized while wearing cloth isn't really the same thing as buffing damage.
The tradeoff should be that cloth is lightweight and usually has magic (damage and mana) buffing stats on it, while leather is a bit heavier but has more protection, while platemail is even slower but has excellent protection. Since mages are usually squishy and need to be mobile, leather or cloth would be the more natural choice.

I think Battlemages are hard to balance due to the defense of a warrior but decent magic abilities. I almost feel it would be hard for them to balance that but if they could then I agree. Maybe a summon mage armor spell or something.

Instead of giving Mages a straight penalty for wearing armor, I'd like to see them receive a bonus for not.

Let's just assume 5 pieces of Armor for right now, to give an easy example

Magic Effectiveness Base 150%

No armor: 150%
Cuirass - 25%
Gauntlets -10%
Cuisses(leg) -10%
Boots -10%
Helmet -5%
Full Armor: 90%

So there is a little bit of a penalty for going full armor, but instead of just harshly punishing the player, it gives incentive to them, to just not use it instead.
