Gear for mages?

Post » Mon Nov 23, 2009 11:48 pm

I love being a mage in TES games. You can do everything anyone else can do, and more.

But there seemed to be a shortage of mage gear in OB.

Yes, you could enchant clothing, but so can any other character.

I'd like;

Wands, They'd be the daggers of magical weapons. Faster than a staff, but weaker.

Orbs, Held in the off hand, they significantly increase a spell's/spell school's power.

More clothes/robes. The clothes in OB didn't really have the "adventuring wizard" look. And the robes were mostly just recolors of the mage robe.
Something like this would be great for clothing; http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20051217042459/nwn2/images/9/93/PHB35_PG57_WEB.jpg

Spell tomes. They would add spells that you could only use with the tome equipped. Since you can have a spell in each hand, I'd think they'd offer a powerful spell, with less magicka required.
Whippin' out a spell book an melting faces sounds awesome.

I'd also just be happy with more variety in staves and robes.

TL;DR - More items for mages.

Its unlikely that they'll add much more than they did in OB, but a guy can dream.

Any suggestions, what do you want?

Basically everything you said.Though I'd like more clothing options specifically.

One thing I'm really hoping for(yet doubting will be in the game) is to be able change the aesthetics of spell when creating it.This way the starting fireball look won't be the only one.

I'd like it if Skyrim had 3 types of armor; Light (Mages), Medium (Thiefs, Archers), and Heavy (Warriors)

So there can actually be an armor set for spellcasters and not "clothes"

I wouldnt want mage "armor", they dont need it, they have magic for defense. Bring back unarmored, but god forbid we actually add back skills.

Self enchanted scrolls need to return.
Soul gems recharge you mana pool, so that's nice.

I wouldn't mind gloves however, to protect yourself against the dangerous magicks (rp reasons). Magicks such as fire, frost, and shock.

Or even warriors...a nice fur cloak to stay warm in the cold mountains would be cool

what would be cool is if there was a perk under light armor (if thats a skill) that increased your magic effectiveness while wearing it
if this isnt one then I will modd it in

I just hope mage robes, or robes in general, look better this time around instead of the plain, bathroom robe you get in OB.

Then again, the robe in the trailer looks quite nice, so that's a good start.

To be honest i liked Oblivion and Morrowinds right to have a heavy armored mage. Although it was hard to use, after training it paid off. You weren't squishy, and you did great damage

A good start indeed. That's the main thing I wanted for the mages in Skyrim to be...instead of 10 robes, if that, in OB with no design. I can't wait to see what else they have.

Staves have always been kind of lacking in variety throughout the Elder Scrolls games. While I do prefer Morrowind's martial weapon approach over Oblivion's "rocket launcher staffs", I see plenty of room for additional types.
  • Battle staffs. These are the typical, two-handed blunt staves featured in earlier Elder Scrolls games. For all intents and purposes they function like polearms, but would perhaps be better off under another skill classification so that magi have less difficulty handling them.
  • Channeling staves. A one-handed staff that can be used as a weapon but is rather ineffective on its own. However, it serves as a magical "amplifier" and one can improve the potency of their spells by casting it through one of these. Alternatively, they could be used to reduce the magicka cost.
  • Enchanted staves. I'm not referring to enchanted in the skill sense, but instead this would be the logical evolution of Oblivion's staff weapons. Similar to the channeling staff described above, these staves would come with a certain spell effect (drain fatigue, for example) that would automatically be applied to whatever spell you cast through it. Would add another way of doing some low-level spell customization for characters who may not be that magically inclined.

Yeah. Good looking robes. Or at the very least, a few more meshes, and preferably not so dumpy looking.

I have no more interest in mage armor than I do in shields with two-handed weapons, and for the exact same reason - that's just one of the trade-offs you have to make. If you insist on wearing armor (and honestly, anyone who couldn't play an unarmored mage in Oblivion.... umm..... wasn't optimally skilled), then you can't cast spells as effectively. If you want to cast spells effectively, man up and cast them - just you and a layer of cloth vs. the world.

Wands.... I guess, but I doubt I'd ever use them. They'd just be extra stuff to carry around. If they didn't have any penalties (like having to be recharged), then they'd unbalance the game - there'd never be any reason to cast a spell any other way. If they did have penalties, I doubt they'd be worth lugging around and equipping, at least in my opinion.

But yeah - more robes, more meshes, more fabrics, more colors, more styles. And more hoods. And gloves. My mages would be happy.

Layering.

As long as I can wear stuff under my robes, I'm good. Weird little magical affectations are fine and whatever, but phase one is letting my chest slot have more than one thing in it.

DDO had a good system with this. Everytime you rest at a rest shrine, the magical item would recharge. And it would recharge (but very very slowly, like 1 use every minute) on its own.

I think they should only recharge a certain number of points when you sleep in a bed, but not recharge on its own.

There would still be a need for soul gems, but I think it would be better.
