GECK crashes upon loading a nif modified by NifSkope?

Post » Mon Sep 20, 2010 2:42 am

Hi everyone,
I downloaded the current version of NifSkope (1.0.22) in order to edit some of the files in dlcanch\architecture\bunkers\walls. Well I unpacked the Anchorage archive and loaded the files into NifSkope.
I then deleted a part of the mesh (to be more precise: The fence on top of each wall of the DLCAnchBnkWall-objects). (I just selected it in the 3D window of NifSkope and deleted the corresponding node) I then saved the file with NifSkope to meshes/zte/architecture. I then duplicated the base objects in the GECK and tried to modify the model path. I selected the file as usual but when GECK tried to load the file it crashed. I just found some reports about GECK crashes with the NifSkope version 1.0.17.

Did I do anything wrong? Must I do more than just deleting the Node containing the Mesh data?

When you delete the wire mesh, and then try to add it to the GECK, you 'must' have seen the errors upon loading the mesh?
The texture set must be stored in the razor wire section, so the wall is now missing its texture set.

At least in the version I tried, this was all true.

I have nifskope v1.5.0.19. And the GECK did not crash. And I have an old version.

Well I can't actually 'see' GECK loading the file, because he crashes instantly on clicking the open button

/edit:
I just want to remark that the nif is still textured in NifSkope, even if I reopen the file...

Yes, it loads in Nifskope just fine.
But loading it in the GECK gives me texture missing warnings and it becomes 'red' in color.

Well I ain't get any warnings. See, I click on the edit button close to the current model file, select my new nif, and then GECK crashes instantly.

I received a interesting tip: Try a pre-1.0.17 version. I'll try that and then report back here

/edit:
I tried 1.0.16, but the file saved by this version are also causing the same crash.

I uploaded this troublesome file now here: http://enkore.de/bnkwallcap01.nif
Maybe you or someone else could try to load it into TES4:CS/GECK?

/edit2:
I now deleted some NiStrips in some other file, loaded it into GECK, and that one just worked. Could it be possible, that NifSkope is incompatible with the file format of the newer NIFs from Fallout Operation: Anchorage?

/edit3:
If I change something in any file from Operation: Anchorage and try to load the result GECK will crash upon loading it. I think it's a reproducable bug...

Did you notice I said I am using version 1.5.0.19? And I am pretty sure this is an old version.
Why are you using v1.0.17?

Upgrade your nifskope and see what happens.

Ok, I just looked at your edited NIF.
It crashes my GECK as well.
You have not deleted the entire NiNode block that is the 'Razorwire05' block.

Thanks for the solution of the problem! :)
I have just one question left: Where do you got your NifSkope from? http://sourceforge.net/projects/niftools/files/nifskope/

/edit:
I AM such an idiot: I didn't used "Remove branch", instead I always "Remove block". Ah sure thing that that couldn't had worked. How could I waste hours of mine and yours time with such an stupid error. Now I am more than just thankful. Again thanks to you! :)

That is where I got my version from. I look again and it now says its v1.0.18
I don't know what I was looking at before.

Yes, you need to remove the entire branch. That is when I got the missing texture errors in the GECK.
