Gems and Gem Dust crash

Post » Wed Apr 06, 2011 3:48 am

Greetings,

Well, I guess it's a never-ending thing after all... just when I thought I had things running nicely, suddenly I'm getting CTDs involved w/ gems and gem dust. What's really weird is that it works fine for some things... I can reduce silver goblets/urns/etc to nuggets. And I can make silver arrowheads. But if I click on a copper nugget, CTD. Now that I think of it though, the silver examples are actually Hunting and Crafting, aren't they? Another weird example: I can grind flawed topaz w/ no trouble, but try to grind a flawless pearl and CTD. This is pretty baffling to me, especially since I've been playing on this build for a couple of days now and had not noticed it. Suddenly I get this odd selective behavior.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? Any clue as to what might be causing it?

Thanks in advance,
veg

*** UPDATE ***
Extremely odd behavior continues. Loaded the game, saved, and then loaded it back again. This time most things ground OK, even items that CTD'd before the save... until I got to a flawed emerald, which caused the CTD. Could this possibly be an OBSE thing? I'm really scratching my head over this one.

Without a load order it's unlikely anyone's going to be able to provide you with any real help. Export your load order from Wrye Bash and paste it in your next post.

You might also want to consider looking at the CTD-causing item entries in TES4View to see which mods affect them, if you know how to use the tool (it's not hard).

You use FCOM, right? The MMM - G&GD plugin is not compatible...fully? You should not use the Diverse Runeskull G&GD plugin either for that reason, as that other plugin is one of its dependencies.

@Vacuity
Thanks for the advice. I do have TES4View, but admittedly it is one of the tools I have used the least and am probably the least familiar with. Still, I should probably get more used to doing stuff like that in order to fix my own problems. Thanks again for the tip... I'll do some homework!

@Tomlong
I am not using MMM - G&GD (I recall reading through the install process that it causes problems). However, I do have the Diverse Runeskull ESP in there... I don't recall seeing any warnings about that one, and Wrye Bash didn't complain when it was in my load order without MMM - G&GD, so it didn't occur to me that it could be a dependency problem. But surely, that one can can go! I'll try taking it out of my load order and see what happens.

Thanks so much for the advice... as always, it is greatly appreciated. If Tomlong's suggestion doesn't work I will post back with my complete load order.

FCOM users are recommended to use the Diverse Runeskulls OOO Loot plugin. That one does not have the MMM G&GD dependency.

Actually, I just looked and the ESP I was thinking of was this one: Mart's Monster Mod - Diverse Runeskulls Loot. If that's the one you were referring too, then yes it's there. But if there is another one called Diverse Runeskull G&GD, it is _not_ in my load order. Hey, speaking of load orders, why don't I go ahead and show you what I've got:

Yup, trade that version you have there out for the Diverse Runeskulls OOO loot version. The reason you should not use the other versions is that OOO (and thereby FCOM) already has its own version of Gems & Dust incorporated.

OK, cool. Found the Diverse Loot ESP and replaced with the Diverse Loot OOO one. Rebuilding the patch now. We'll see what happens!

Well, no luck. I replaced the ESP as mentioned above, ran BOSS, re-built the patch, made a new save, but still the first grindable item I clicked in my inventory caused an instant CTD (copper nugget in this case) . Not good.

So, I guess now I have to try and track down what the problem is. To clarify what I said before, I used TES4View to do a basic cleaning job when I installed FCOM. By "basic", I mean I followed only the recommendations and didn't go out on any limbs just to try something. So I really am a novice with the tool, but I am familiar with it.

I assume I would look for the form ID of one of the items causing trouble, like a copper nugget? And I assume I would do this with my entire load order loaded into TES4View. I'll go through the docs on that and see if I can figure it out, but if anyone can give me any pointers on this I'd really appreciate it. I'm entering that area (again) with my Oblivion install where I'm not necessarily on familiar ground, and I realize that a few little mistakes in the wrong places could hose everything. And I really don't want to go through all of this again... not this soon, anyway!

TIA!

Well, I must say that now I am really confused. I have looked up the formID of the copper nugget (0700AEEF) in TES4View, and looked at what it's referenced by, and everything looks fine. No red, just green and white entries. But on other items that were_not_ causing CTDs (like a silver nugget), I _do_ see red entires for ICON and SCRIPT... yet that one does _not_ cause a CTD. I really don't understand this, or where I should look next. Any help at all would sure be appreciated!

Thanks,
veg

*** EDIT ***
Bad example above: silver nugget does not have red entries. However, diamond does for both ICON and SCRIPT, diamonds do not cause CTDs (yet!)

The OOO script effect fix should either not be loading after the bashed patch, or should not be merged and remain active. The same goes for that other plugin you have loading after the bashed patch. Aside from that, nothing jumps out at me as being wrong with your load order.

Ahhh, OK, I see. Let me pose this one real quick: BOSS puts those two plugins after my bashed patch, yet both are mergeable. Which would be preferable? Change BOSS' recommendation and move them up in the load order, or leave them where BOSS wants them and un-merge them? I realize there probably isn't a standard answer here, so I guess I'd like to know what you would do?

Thanks again, man!

I would say do not merge them because there has to be a good reason for them to load after the bashed patch. Merging them in defeats that purpose. Generally, plugins have to load after the bashed patch if some part of the bashed patch's functionality causes something to get borked. Therefore, merging them in does cannot possibly be helping. I will ask in the BOSS thread about adding "NoMerge" suggestion to those script-effect silencers and whatnot that load after the bashed patch.

Excellent, thank you. I'll make the changes and see where that gets me. If that doesn't take care of it, do you know what I would need do next? I spoke briefly about what I saw in TES4View above (BTW, TES4View and TES4Edit are the same program, are they not? Just different functionalities of the same thing?). I really don't know what to do with what I saw there, especially since the results seemed reversed from what I expected. Hopefully I'm getting ahead of myself and things will be fine now... but just in case they're not, I'm wondering where I should turn next...

Yup. TES4Edit used to be the equivalent of running the command "tes4view.exe -edit" but I am not sure if that is the case anymore. They are still the same program. I suggest posting in the MMM thread about it, as opposed to eating up space here.

Ah, well, I need to go take a break for a bit. Good luck!

Edit: oops...it might be your install order too. I forget you should be using OOO's G&GD. This is too complicated for someone running out the door..

I couldn't agree more... this is complicated, and I'm _not_ on my way out the door! Listen, if you get a chance at some point, could you tell me what you mean by OOO's G&GD? I've been digging through the OOO, MMM, and FCOM archives and can't seem to find anything that quite matches. If I find an answer I'll let you know here.

Thanks again!

Gems & Geomancy (and Gem Dust): http://devnull.sweetdanger.net/OOO/OOO_133_readme.pdf

Thanks! Reading through this though, it sounds like it's all merged into OOO, and so no additional ESPs are needed? I don't know. I have made all the changes we have talked about, and my install order was solidly based on Blade of Mercy's guide, so I don't think I screwed that up. Last attempt yielded the same results: CTD. Actually, my fear now is that I'm making things worse trying to fix it.

I've made a new post on the MMM thread as you suggested. I hope someone has a suggestion. The weekend is almost over and I've spent too much time not playing already!

Thanks again,

Did you PyFFI the OOO meshes perhaps?

No, I kept my hands off OOO, and used only the optimized meshes for 1.33 and 1.34 beta 5 patch. As far as PyFFI goes, I didn't go crazy. I stuck to the recommendations in the guides I read, and only PyFFI'd things that specifically said they should be PyFFI'd, with the exception of a couple of house mods (and even then, I stuck to only the 8 folders recommended in Blade of Mercy's guide).

Sorry, that's more than you asked. Trying to be as thorough as possible to get to the bottom of this.

No, that is helpful. Since, some other users have had the problem earlier, it is likely that those PyFFI-mesh patches are not the problem. I wonder if it has something to do with OBSE, since you have so many script-related issues. However, OOO's G&GD has no dependency on OBSE, whatsoever.

Try my mod which changes the way gem dust works so that you can grind multiple gems at a time. Basically I changed the grinding system for OOO.

I wondered about OBSE too, but it sounds like that's probably not it. FYI, after un-selecting the OOO script import in my bashed patch, spells began working again. Midas' apparatus worked as well, and I was able to create 2 new spells, _and_ test that they worked, animations and all. I did everything but try grinding, which I am willing to take a wait-and-see approach with until I'm certain the rest is stable. Besides, Corepc sounds pretty sure that G&GD just is not going to work w/ OOO/FCOM. That's OK if that's the case... I just wonder what I'd do to avoid accidentally hitting something in my INV... maybe just not carry a M&P around w/ me?

Anyway, I played for a while, but then got another freeze-up in a battle between my character, a mage partner, and two goblins. The freeze occurred right when my partner cast a spell... hmmm.... Just in case, I went out and got the latest nVidia driver. I've had this card for just over a year now, and had not updated the driver since late last summer.

After I did that, I loaded the game back up and went through the little battle again. No freezes this time, and lots of different spells were cast. So, did the WHQL from nVidia fix the freezes? I don't know... I admit they _are_ different from the CTDs I was getting before. Still, I don't know why that would suddenly be a problem, but it's better to eliminate that as a possible cause.

Thanks for the suggestion! If I can get some of these other issues taken care of, I will check it out. Just to be sure, is your mod FCOM-compatible?

It is, and that version is recommended by many FCOM users. I thought Corepc recommended it to you already...
