[Character Creation] Gender

Post » Fri Nov 27, 2015 11:52 am

Will we be able to choose the gender of the married couple in Fallout 4? (ie two men or two women)

Thank you.

Unknown, but nothing says we can as of yet.

Honestly, it's unlikely. Especially since a biological baby is involved.

A potentially LBTQ individual is wondering if they can play as an LGBTQ individual in a game series that has historically allowed them to? What blasphemy! It's an innocent question, man.

Unlikely. Then again it seems like a very small part of the game so why not? The kid could be adopted. Dunno how it would slot in with lore though. It is the 50's (kinda) after all.

It's really a silly question, and I don't remember any FO game where the protags were a married couple at character creation.

Just role play it if need be. As far as we know the spouse is dead anyway so not like it matters.

It's interesting how many threads there are about not being able to be gay, I get it, but to me it's only one thing you can't be due to dominant story lines. I kind of like it because it illustrates something that I have been arguing for some time which is story lines need to be stripped back in these games, even removed entirely. I love fallout 3/skyrim/etc but the story lines hold them back from truly being able to make interesting characters, gayness is only one thing the story stops you from being, but interestingly it has taken "no gay option" for people to realise it.

A couple with a baby is as good a story as any, arguably the most significant possible story, but the bigger issue is we don't want THEIR stories, we want to make our own. Not being able to be gay is only one small facet of the issue, but if it helps highlight the issue, I'm glad.

Technically, only FNV "fully" supported the idea of a gay or lisbian characters. It's been a long time since I played F1 and I never finished F2, but if memory serves me correct the rest gave you the freedom to make up your own story and actions, but they didn't have any dialogue or talents/perks that went out of the way to support it.

Absolutely. It shouldn't be a big issue to add this option to the game and it would mean a lot to many people. It's a matter of identifying oneself with your character. It's a matter of LGBTQ inclusion.

So what if the spouse is dead? It matters. I want to be able to roleplay whatever character I can imagine or I relate to.

If it's doable, why don't do it?

It's a parody of 1950s America. A gay couple would never be allowed to openly exist.

There could be an option that your character was in the closet.

I'm still under the impression that pre-war america didn't allow gay marriages. Or at least it's not socially accepted.

Because people are hyped and will find a way to defend literally any design choice of this game because they're excited. I guarantee you that if they removed SPECIAL and character creation in its entirety there would be people praising it. In fact, back when we thought you couldn't play as a female, people were defending THAT. There's literally nothing that will make these people constructively criticize this game.

This is a good point. At the same time we honestly don't know how gay people were treated in the pre-war era. Clearly interracial couples are A-ok in the Fallout universe, which were not ok in the 50s. Why not gay couples?

The easy solution to this problem would be to have an alternate start to the game if you don't want to play the main storyline where you are just dropped into the post-war world somewhere random at level 1. Most Bethesda games get a mod for this at some point anyway so I wouldnt be surprised if they included this from the start...

There is a biological offspring of the male and female character, that is programmed to be a blend of the two.

That being said, the child (and possibly the spouse) are definitely MQ related.

Do I have to explain why same six couples won't work here?

Its not a personal attack, its not demeaning, it is a means for the creator to tell the story, and apparently it requires a mother and a father. I don't get why people are so hung up on this.

Do you get hung up reading a book when the main protagonist isn't gay? Of course not. Because you want to hear the writers story. So you read it how they wrote it.

No you will probably not. The game demo showed us only a switch between the female and male lead. There was nothing to hint that we will be able to go with two women or two men.

I'm sure the Black Widow, Lady Killer, Cherchez La Femme and Comfirmed Bachelor perks will be in the game early on. From that you can be whatever gender id you wish. And by no later then Janurary there will be mods to change the starting couple to whatever gender mix you want.
