General combat style

How would you like the general combat style to be in TES 5: Skyrim?

The combat was actually one of the few parts of oblivion I didn't mind. It would need quite a few changes, but overall I think it worked pretty well... One thing I'm erally hope the new engine might provide, is a less passive feel to the movement. In both morrowind and oblivion (and the newer fallout games) you feel quite stiff as you move around, would be cool if you were able to maybe make some quick strafes to the side and do some more athletic moves

Meh, I thought Oblivion had a pretty decent combat style.
On the other hand, Beth could probably do a good job by taking a few notes from http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=8273

Well... Dark Messiah looks pretty nice... And MnB′s combat is more made for big fights (think 50-100-200-300 men in the fight, maybe not 300 at the same time but still) so it propably wouldnt fit in with the more 1 vs a few fights we got in TES.
And the game is actually over 50% fighting. They should put some effort in it. So IMO something like Dark Messiah would look nice.

But we have no idea what that is and it's most likely that BGS will build off of Oblivion's combat system because it was a step in the right direction.

Generally Oblivion with dynamic animations and special moves. This would work pretty well for 1st and 3rd person combat.

I don't know what's so special or different about Dark Messiah.

Now that i think of it, It's basically Oblivion combat, except with improved animations and a few other minor differences that make it even better.

I voted other. I'd love some sort of combat system where say for an example, you press X (360) to attack and some sort of reallistic, amazing animation will play in an attack. If you ever played Heavy Rain on the PS3 the sort of animations you had in fights but alot more responsive when all you need to do is press the button and it plays. I'd also like dodging to be included better than oblivions, so if you move the anolog stick in a direction and press the block button you would dodge or roll out of the way. Same cool animation for blocks too, and big, bone breaking visceral combat when you kill an enemy! :)

When your character gets better at combat so do the animations -- sorry for a chunk of text, had to say that :)

I actually felt dark messiahs combat to be really flat in terms of feeling. alot of strikes didn't feel like they had any real impact other than a screentremble effect.. I actually think oblivion did a better job on this.

Not sure what you mean, you could kill an enemy with a few blows and sometimes cut off limbs/head.

I agree, the combat system is one of the few things I prefer from OB over MW. However, I would like if fatigue played a bigger part, and also agility, like in MW. And there was a few things I preffered about the MW spell system - that you could fail spells, for example, and could resist silence and paralyze. However I like that magicka recharges (perhaps a bit slower in skyrim though?) and I love that you can cast spells with your weapon out. I also preffered all the extra spell effects from MW. OB spellcasting feels so much smoother. Another thing that bugged me about both games was that magic projectiles travelled too slow - there were too easy to dodge. I would prefer if they were sped up slightly.

They should play some good action games and take notes. Too many developers use the "It's an rpg!" excuse to deliver sub-par combat. Just because there's some stats and character development thrown in doesn't mean the combat has to be minimalistic or unresponsive.

I hope BGS replaces the ridiculous backflip move with a more standard evasion maneuver.

Anything that doesn't break the 1rst person view is fine by me. And Oblivion with a few improved/altered moves/animations would suffice.

What I'd really hate to see is somehow jumping on rocket heavy armored dudes who bounce off the walls and twirl like whirlwinds and stuff, like you see way too often in JRPG's and Asian action movies. Over-animated, unrealistic and fugly. That would svck imho.

Please for the love of god use Dark Messiah. It's combat is much better than Oblivion's. In Oblivion alls you do is point and swing your sword as fast as you can, in Dark Messiah you can kick enemies off cliffs, impale them on spikes, and every once in a while do a cool special move.

Target spells became mostly useless because enemies kept moving and they were so slow.
So I agree they should be faster.

So, it's Oblivion with special moves. K, let's do it.

Erm...Morrowind style :)

1) I never use the power moves, unless it's by accident
2) I don't have the coordination to move forward, slide my mouse to the right, and click a button all the while trying to stay on target.
3) All of those moves make the game feel more like a video game rather than a cRPG
4) I was perfectly content with MW's style and could accept that even though I "hit" it was really a miss due to the die roll (PnP background)
5) I'm a bow and backstab kind of guy

Ya, I think I'm the only one who still liked MW's style :crochety:

edit: never played Mount and Blade nor Dark Mesiah

I voted for M&B style, but if it was just like Oblivion I wouldn't care at all.

Mix of OB and MW style with some other points as well

-Attacks will be in direction you are facing, as in if you are facing high, it will be a headslash, if low, a legslash. Same for blocking
-You can set it to slash, chop or stab and you could possibly have weaponary subskill.
- You will hit basicallyevery time but the amount you hit will be somewhat randomised depending on your level of that weapon. Your blade(or other weapon skill for whatever you're using, blade is an example) + strength and speed determines your max str and sp, but blade alone determines your chances of critical hits.
-Lower skill also gives chance of staggering (or when using magic, possible innacuracies or spell-casting failure, and when using bows, shaky aim)
-Possibly some special moves that are easy to do but take more fatigue.

I voted option 2. I liked Oblivion's style but mods such as Deadly Reflexes etc. made it perfect. I'd like to see this style of special moves added and mounted combat,
