RP General Discussion- III

Post » Thu May 03, 2012 9:17 pm

Of Princes and Power is a extremely political RP based in a post-empire High Rock where 4 independent realms struggle for power over the entire province. We need some more players for Sharnhelm and everyone is welcome to join up.
Are you forced to be a Breton if you wanted to be a lord...?

No, however the only other races that really might fit in a bit as a lord of a Bretic realm would be the Altmer or Imperials. It would be kind of odd to have a Bosmer or Argonian being the Lord of a Bretic realm in High Rock :P

I knew it was an obvious thing, but I know nothing of Breton lore, but I can do wonders with Altmer... :)

Don't forget the Redguards. Also there are Dunmeri nobility (hell half of the royal family in Daggerfall..). During the cosmopolitan years of the Empire pretty much all nobility married into all other nobility. The only exception probably being the "beast races".

I'll drink to that sentiment. :foodndrink: Unfortunately, I cannot join myself, but I have been following it a bit, and it does look interesting.

If we are advertising RPs here, I suppose I should mention the Gray Bloods Company. We've hit a bit of a speed bump recently, but we're opening up the sign up again for the second portion of the introduction RP. Eventually, we plan on making a guild-like RP series, where we engage in multiple, smaller RPs one after another. That way there's no gradual drop off or loss of interest (both of which can be observed in the prototype we've already tried :P ). We've learned from the mistakes in the first one, however, and I promise as GM I won't let the same thing happen again. This time when I say quick RP, I mean a quick RP. ;)

With that shameless plug out of the way, I'd like to say that a general RP discussion should be a bit more than brainstorming and advertising. Does anyone have any actual thoughts on RPing in general? I know I've got a few things I'd care to talk about, like the tips and tricks to keep an RPing exciting, or how exclusive a GM should be in allowing players to join their RP. :)

Also, I'm not sure having so many RPs in one community at a single time is the best idea. Not to bash the free market of RPing, but a little bit of discussion might be good before anyone starts up another new one. The new RPs usually end up stealing interest and players from the established ones, causing them to falter, and then those new ones in turn suffer from the same problem later. Giving people warning ahead of time might be a good idea, so GMs can get an idea of who they can expect to continue in their own story. Just a thought. ;)

True dat. We do have an awful lot of RPs at the moment. I think oPaP is in for the long-haul at least, and hopefully Valton too.

I'd be facinated to hear people's thoughts on RPs in general. I've probably GMed more RPs than I've joined, but I am still learning new things all the time.

Of course not, my friend. It was a general statement; I did not mean to say that your RP in any way harmed the activity of my own, or anyone elses. No, the first part of Gray Bloods had trouble for different reasons. :P

Princes looks excellent though, I must say. I wish you luck with it; I'll be following closely. ;)

Haha I was just messing around man. :P

And I really wish you had the time to join man. It would be great to have a lot of us guys from the IBT (Current and Former) on there.

The problem with this is that Davian does die... several times, actually. But he keeps making another one first! In fact, I'm considering submitting him to "Of Princes and Power". Possibly as Baron of the Illessan Hills.

My problem with getting into the Grey Blood Company is the fact that so much time is wasted with almost nothing happening. I like how flexible the New Hold's being with its ability to support a larger number of players, and the relatively loose connection to time allowing the RP to go on even if a player falls off the face of the forums. That said, I really do need to go over there, but I keep struggling to find the time and/or idea for what I want to do.

Fingers crossed Shimmermist Mine should be kicking off v soon. I've been in touch with Tom, and we should hear back about it soon. I think the town could do with a bit of adventure now, so some is going to come to us.

Then tell people your concerns and get out. No need to keep people waiting.

We've been trying to keep things moving, but I think that the plot idea itself is the problem. In a novel or with a small group it might've worked better, because the pace would have moved more quickly, but with such a diverse array of players we just don't get the interaction that we need. Which leaves the bulk of people's posts to just moving along through a pre-made plot. The idea just doesn't lend itself well to creativity or discussion, which is preventing many people from coming up with anything to post. It will work well as a backstory, but for an actual RP it's a little weak.

That said, the second portion should be fixing those problems. There will be much more room for character interactions and creativity, since we will be in the Imperial City. The only thing we'll need to be sure of is that everyone has something to do, rather than just wandering around the city. More than anything we need to make sure conversations are started, and people begin interacting; something definitely lacking in the first portion.

Does anyone else that has been in or read the RP have any criticism? I am trying to ensure the same thing does not happen this next time, but in order for that to happen I need to know exactly what went wrong. Not to say it wasn't an enjoyable RP, but it just lacked that certain something.

Haha, Wooly I used to feel the same. Its something you just have to start at, and soon it comes naturally. I try to keep a 1:1 ratio nowadays, for feminism's sake :).

The trick with writing women is to remember they are exactly the same as men, apart from when they are not . Social issues, or situations like motherhood might affect a female character, and make her act or think differently than a man, but that is it. Apart from the ways men only act due to social and physical differences .

Apart from when they're not. Say that to Uthgerd the Unbroken's face and not Online

Actually you are right, of course. A woman growing up on a patriarchal society is more likely to have spent her childhood developing social skills and emotional sensitivity than a boy who spent the whole time playing Knights and Daedra with wooden swords. Of course, if the girl grew up differently and became one of Daggerfall's many female Knights, then maybe she won't be more emotional.

It's not that hard. I actually prefer it. But I will stay away from thing I'd have no idea how to write about: pregnancy, motherhood, female puberty, that time of the month, etc. But the rest is pretty much the same.

Okay everyone: New RP taking place in the Imperial City during the Thalmor invasion. Then it's off to Skyrim for a hell of an adventure. Any type of character accepted, just be sure to stick to the RP unless there is a very good reason to leave. I am sure Darkom can explain it better.

I guess I'll give it a shot. :P

For anyone curious, yes we are starting the second half of Gray Bloods within the next week or so. Sign up begins tomorrow, after we timeskip the first thread.

The RP itself will be, as Werewolf said, in the Imperial City during the Thalmor invasion. We will start off with our main crew entering the city and demanding an audience with the emperor, then explain to him the Aldmeri plans for attack. He'll dismiss us for the day while he plans what to do; meanwhile, we'll be free to roam the streets, visit a tavern, or just have a conversation. This is the period where the majority of new players would join in, being "recruited" by the current members for a way out of the about-to-be-invaded city. After that we'll return to the emperor to hear his plan.

It'll be a loose RP, with a lot of character freedom and interactions. The third installment will pick up the action again before we finally head to Skyrim to found our little guild. :)

It should be fairly short, depending on how much conversation there is. The plan is to start sometime next week and finish before mid-March or so, at which point you can opt out of the third RP, or if you can't sign up just yet you can wait for that one. The idea is, and always has been, a less strict commitment policy, with quicker RPs so people can drop in and out as they need to. So if you're looking for some interesting characters and, later on, some exciting battles, keep an eye out for the sign up. ;)

It sounds interesting, but I really don't want to join more than two RPs. If IB's new one is coming out soon, it gets priority.
