That's what I probably will be doing as looking at the map will take too much time, not to mention that I may find treasure on the Mountain.

I don't see a problem with the 3D map.

I don't really see a problem with the 3D map. It's more a thing I dislike a bit and something I would prefer to have replaced with an old, worn map. Something that you can actually believe that you hold in your hands.

I'm not really sure about anybody else, but for me personally, that would feel more "RPG'ish" and thus more fitting than something similar to google maps...

It's a big part of their shift with the new UI.

I'd have to agree. Maybe it would fit better in a Fallout game, because I could see someone developing a "GPS" type of device (or have it built into a pip boy) that would show you some sort of 3D map, but it really doesn't fit with TES. I was quite happy with the way the map looked in Oblivion and I really don't see why the "paper map" style needed changed, other than to get 'Ooohs and Aaahs' from people who like such things.

- You cannot make notes on the map
Aww :(
I wonder if we can place custom markers. Probably not, but they can't implement every good idea.

- There will also be some friendly dragons you can speak with
My number one worry is dispelled! No one-dimensional "all dragons are evil" situation! Even if 99% of the dragons we meet are enemies this makes me happy.

- The wind is going to have influences on the water so there might be some ?crimps? (dunno if its the right word) on the water due to the wind and there will also be dynamic waves depending on the wind
This sounds interesting. Crimps gets the point across but ripple is the one you're looking for I think. Ripples are like crimps in water. http://www.publicdomainpictures.net/pictures/9000/nahled/rippling-water-2961283233469Whct.jpg

- Lockpicking is a minigame again
Yay!

- They are planning to connect Skyrim with social networks like facebook
As long as it's optional and not like Blizzard's Starcraft II creeping me out by storing and displaying my real life name I don't care. I'll be very disappointed if it's required though. I don't like sharing my real name online.

I didn't respond to the others since I didn't have anything to say. I am so ridiculously hyped for this game! Thanks for the topic!!

This is only a reply to the first post. I need to catch up with the thread.

At some stage, Bethesda has to decide if keeping the map "authentic" is worth making it useless for its intended purpose, which is helping you get to places.

Back in Oblivion as long as I have a horse, I can pretty much go anywhere in a straight line. But if Skyrim is going to have impassible terrain, medieval maps just aren't going to cut it.

I am sure Bethesda can justify the 3D by claiming the map is magical. It pretty much was already magical in Oblivion; it maps in areas into itself too quickly to have been drawn in by hand by the player avatar.

NMD. Pete said it was a translation error. No Facebook.

The "friendly" dragons won't be like "Say my good boy, why don't you sit down and have a nice spot of tea?" They'll have deep intimidating voices, but they won't be trying to kill you.

probably both really, intimidating deep voices but with a very civilized demeanor.

I hope you need some skill to open the lock, yes... but i hope a minigame more Oblivion-style... the one from Fallout was a joke.

I don't see why they wouldn't. Common sense would tell you to look around the actual mountain, instead of on the map, and find a way around, over, or through. The mountains could still be drawn out on the map. And if it's going to be some sort of "magical" map, we better get a damn explanation of why we have a magical map.

I have to disagree, Fallout 3's locpicking was simple unlike Oblivion. If they want to combine both and have you pick the lock multiple times depending on how many locks you have on the door then that's acceptable too.

I really disliked Oblivion's lockpicking mini-game...
Got so tedious after a while that I just spammed the auto-lockpick button instead.

As long as the lockpicking has the same dual nature as before, mini-game for the 'I am in control' types like me, and skill based chance auto attempt for the 'player skill is all' rp'ers, then all well and good.
As for the 3d map, maybe once you have climbed the 7000 steps and looked down on the whole province, it can be rationalised as your memories from that vantage point.

Speaking from experience, looking around an actual mountain to find a passage is no where near easy as when you are that close, you can't actually see much of it. And with sufficient height it might well be impossible to actually see the top of mountains while on ground level.

As for explaining the magical map... TES never does. You just have a self-drawing map, automatically in your possession. I don't think there was ever a story reason for any of them in any TES game.

The skill requirement is the worst part. Just because i'm not skilled at something there should be a magical barrier that physically prevents me from even trying? I don't care if it's a one in a million chance there shouldn't be a magical barrier.

I never thought they were "magical" in any way. I just assumed your character marked them in kind of in the background of everything.

This is a full 3D map. So yeah, it's definitely has to be magical. And yeah, it probably doesn't NEED an explanation, as you could just make it up, but I just don't like it personally. I still feel it doesn't fit all that well.

As for people who would find it too hard to do without "Google maps", I say get over it. I don't see why everything needs to be dumbed down because people don't want to explore, get lost, and be immersed in an open world game.
