Get rid of magic projectiles in Skyrim?

Post » Mon Mar 22, 2010 3:38 am

It would be cool if they have spells that take a while to cast, that can make people combust into flames.

i think this would be a great option for stealth, the enemy wouldent see the giant ball comming at them

i think the downside should be increased magika use
Both great ideas. I'd really just like more variety in the magic in the elder scrolls. Finally, some constructive conversation. Not just people screaming NOOO learn how to aim.

I don't want them removed I vote to have both. More variety in maguc spells can't hurt.

You have an excellent point but my fear is that they will improve or add something that doesn't really need improving or adding (Projectiles) instead of improving or adding something that does need improving or adding (Level scaling e.t.c).

You just need to lead your shots, aim where they're going to be, not where they are. I didn't have any problems using a bow or magic in Oblivion on my X-bawx.

I second this. I loved using bows in Oblivion, and I didn't mind the ranged spells either. If it's giving you so much trouble, make a ranged spell with an area effect.

I find no need for this; the speed of magic projectiles in Oblivion was fine. If you have trouble hitting your targets that is not because you are a console gamer, you just need to... be better. Most enemies move in straight lines either directly toward you or directly away, so the speed of the projectile does not really matter so long as you aim at your target. If you really need a faster moving projectile go buy a bow, but if the issue is in the man not the tool you may wish to invest in an axe.

What about the controls used to aim that tool? On the PC it was easier to hit targets, but like I said I play mostly on a console so I'm not too used to M&K. There is a reason why there is aim tug on consoles and there is a reason why COD is so popular. COD is by far the most precisely controlled shooter on consoles. Devs seem to forget how important control is when porting to consoles and there are too many games ruined by bad control(far cry 2, Crysis 2(beta), GTA4, RBR, Killzone 2 prob 3 too). Oblivion and Fallout have bad controls on consoles and no aim tug and the highest sensitivity isn't high enough. In fallout a lot of the time I had to resort to VATS to kill enemies. I'm not bad at FPSs on consoles (I'd link you to my youtube account, but I think that would be a bad idea). The problem are the controls. I've said that I might not mind the slow movement if the look movement was as smooth as COD's.

I don't think Bethesda will run out of time to add what they need to. If they did, I'd agree that level scaling is far more important then improving magic overall.

I don't think they should get rid of projectiles, but I agree that there should also be hitscan or fudged hitscan spells (like Incinerate in Bioshock, or a decent chain lightning attack). They should probably be more costly, but the main limitation should be a hard cap on the range.

A spell with a minor homing behavior might be the solution to your troubles.

No, but I would like to see a new type of way to cast destruction spells added to the options of touch, or ranged. Some thing like casting a destruction spell on an area that had a continuous affect. or something that has a delayed reaction, like some kind of spell mine that was triggered when an enemy steps on it, that way you can protect your back from any bandits.

Just a question that popped up in my mind while reading this thread about (mostly magic) projectiles. Is it possible to catch an arrow in Oblivion that someone shot at you if you are skilled and/or lucky with your bare hands (picking it up and putting it in your inventory) or by grabbing onto it with telekinesis while the arrow is coming straight towards you within arms lenght?

In Tes V they should make slower magic projectiles more powerful and the faster ones a lil' less menacing. An option which could be altered along with most other SpellCrafting options. This would maybe add and tweak that little extra punch the lazy-eyed magicians with a slow trigger finger needs. Otherwise I think that one needs to aim where the target will be, and not where the target is. (Unless the circumstances are more normal, like if the target is standing still, fleeing directly from you or chasing you like a madman.)

And pretty please with sugar ontop, let us be able to conjur up several creatures at once! One zombie for 60 seconds will not do anyone any good. I would rather have a shambling horde at my command for 20 seconds.

Overall I got to say that I have faith in that whatever they do they will manage to pull it off and please the nerdherd. (Well ofc there are plenty of possible, horrible scenarios, but cut 'em some slack.)
The way they used magic in Oblivion was fine with me, but more variety is always great.

(I like to put words within parantheses) :)

That’s interesting. I’ve never thought about it from a console point of view before.

But since TES is a role playing series and your skills are meant to be based in your stats not your player skills I think that they should use a lock on system.

You have to lock onto a target in your screen before firing, and if you hit or not should be dependent on your skill.

This should go for thrown weapons and bows and arrows as well.

Please, anything but this. While this does make character skill more important it also takes away a lot of the fun playing as a mage/ranger. I'd rather not have the traditional MMO lock-on-target-and-faceroll system in a first person video game. Besides, what if I want to shoot my fireball/arrow at something besides hostile actors?

I never used magic projectiles often in Oblivion. Being a console player (for the most part) it's nearly impossible to hit a moving target with a slow moving projectile. I think if magic projectiles should be replaced with a sort of magic which is like a bullet(I know a bullet is a projectile). When a bullet is shot over a short range it hits near instantly after it is shot. This spell would act similarly where you point at your target, cast, and it instantly hits your target. Of course the enemies will have the same ability so avoiding an incoming magic attack will come impossible(Unless the AI has a percent possibility it will miss). I think this would probably make silence and resistance magic more important. Overall I think it would make the magic system more useful. Do you agree?

P.S. Before any one starts with the ant-console talk. I have played through Oblivion on PC and the projectiles where still hard as balls to use. Oo and bow and arrow is almost useless. I would like crossbows which would act similar to the spell I mentioned above.

Learn to aim, I'm on console and can hit decently. Think of space invaders (hint: hit at where their going)

I never sat there and said, "Hmmm, I can't hit things. These spells should be taken out". You just don't seem to be... well... good at aiming.

Once you reach a level high enough you should be able to lock on to a target for a short amount of time. Thus, allowing you to "towards" your target and the projectiles would follow them just like a heat seeking missle. I said towards your target becouse the idea could be abused and allow people to hide behind cover or run away from the emeny and still hit them, making them too powerful.

I do not feel that the controls were bad in Oblivion, or for any of the other games you mentioned either. I also do not feel that CoD has any more precise controls than the other games, or if the controls have any impact on you not being able to hit enemies because the projectiles are too slow (which is the original point of the topic). I don't mean to be that guy, and I'm not trolling, but I really think this might be a case where saying L2P is warranted. Really, if you can't adjust to the controls of the game that is unfortunate, but asking for a complete overhaul of the casting system is a bit much. Again I am dead serious, but my next piece of advice would be to play the game on a computer rather than a console. You seem to complain a lot without looking for any real solutions, but instead blaming the tools at your disposal for your faults. I know this is harsh, but if you take a step back and look at your posts you might understand our reasons for our "trolling."

I dont really understand the OPs complaint because it's not that hard to hit anything, but I guess from what everyone else is saying you should aim better.

yes it is possible :D quite simple just spamming the activate/pickup key in a fight, catch all sorts of things, and the grab Key can stop arrows as well.

When I play it on consoles, I had no problem hitting targets. I think the magic system itself needs to be changed, but I thought the magic projectiles were fine.

I'm talking about aim controls here. If the controls are a bit input laggy or if the anolog stick seems to only register movements in the X,Y plane and a diagonal in each quadrant, I consider those to be bad look movement controls. The devs are responsible for mapping the look movement, normally controlled by a mouse on PC, to the movement of an anolog stick. In my opinion Beth does a very bad job of that. I have played on the PC. I prefer to play on a console and I would be fine with playing Skyrim on a console if the LOOK controls are good. Are you saying Killzone 2 has control precision on the level of COD? The ability to control where I aim has a direct impact on aiming my projectile to hit an enemy. If the controls are going to be the same in Skyrim it would be easier to hit things if I didn't have to lead at all. I'm not asking for a complete overhaul. This is one change/addition. If you read all my posts you would see I said I voted to have both spell types. The fact that some games seem to control worse than others (to me) is a matter of personal perception. I had a friend that bought an HDTV once who didn't notice the lag it produced, when to me it was glaringly obvious. He even went so far as to test it using Guitar hero's lag tester. It did have significant lag. Control lag does ruin the experience for me sometimes. Although, I liked Far Cry 2 and Killzone 2 enough to finish them and even play a little multiplayer. RDR on the other hand, I thought was very boring, it wasn't really all about the controls with that one. I guess I just don't like westerns. Off topic, back to what you said. Not looking for a solution you say. This whole thread is about a possible solution. Are you sure you didn't inadvertently troll me here. Seriously, this is ridiculous.

That would kill the way magic has established itself over the series, and it would remove the way skill magic took to use. Why don't you use area effect spells, that would remove any need of perfectly timing your shots and just let you have a nice window for inaccuracy. They could use your suggestion and implement it into skill perks, i.e. higher skill level faster your fireball.

The higher your skill in a certain magic the faster the projectile should go. Problem solved.

No. Why does it seem more people want Fallout 3 with magic? I wonder how much of these people started with Arena or just got into it because of Fallout 3 or just like playing with guns and want them in the game as well.

I started with Morrowind on the xbox. Probably, would have played the earlier games if I was born a lot earlier.

That said, magic is very powerful and should require skill to balance it out.
