Depends how much light there is to adjust to. It doesn't make sense for you to be able to see in a cave with no light source.
That's quite true, your eyes adjusting to the darkness doesn't mean you can see when there's no light to see with, it just means you can see better in limited amounts of light. To a certain extent, eyes adjusting to the level of brightness could be implemented, but it shouldn't allow you to see in situations where there is no light to see with at all. What's the point of torches if you can do that?
The human eye adjusts to the dark but it takes about 20 to 45 minutes.
But there still needs to be some amount of light to adjust to, if there's no light at all, you're not going to see anything because you need light to see, that's how sight works, after all. And in any case, even once you're eyes adjust to the darkness, you're not going to be able to see as well as in broad daylight even in turn all your lights off at night levels of darkness, even though if there's a window in your room, some degree of light may still shine in from outside that way.
