I'm getting absolutely sick of this.

Post » Sat Dec 10, 2011 1:01 am

I've put up with it until now, the random crashing to desktop for no reason. But 8 times in ONE HOUR my game has crashed today. I've changed no settings at all, but the game shouldn't crash in the first place! Will this be fixed with the next patch? Because I'm finding it hard to become motivated to even play this game now, because as soon as I get into it, it seems like the game crashes. It's impossible to get immersed, and if it's not crashing which is spoiling my gameplay, it's some other bug that Bethesda haven't fixed properly. I'm struggling to enjoy this game, part of me wants to enjoy it, but I just can't because of all these damn problems. I would expect it if I had bought an illegal torrent copy, but I've paid money for this game, and it doesn't work properly! What's worse is that Bethesda don't seem to even care about these issues! Getting real sick of this.

Sorry to hear your problems bro, I have seen enough of these topics to realize that often the problem is your computer VS skyrim rather than an inherent problem with the game it self. I've had only 2 CTD's in 30hrs of game play so far.

Well that seems strange, because my computer is more than capable of running this game. I have run other games which are just as demanding as Skyrim absolutely flawlessly.

only 1 CTD in over 40hrs and that was because the video card got too hot.

Well that seems strange, because my computer is more than capable of running this game. I have run other games which are just as demanding as Skyrim absolutely flawlessly.

i would make sure you run windows updates, update your video card driver, run a defrag, get and run a good registry cleaner, etc. most likely it's your machine as other people aren't having the same issues. as i said i've only crashed once total and only because of heat issues.

I had this same problem and it turned out to be nvidia drivers. Surprisingly I am now using drivers that are over a year old and I have had no crashes in 6 days. I would recommend rolling back drivers to older versions until you get more stability.

I wish people would stop blaming the game instead of the rig. Your pc may be more than capeable, that doesn't mean it won't crash. If you are crashing and others aren't, it's your rig.

Only ever had a couple of crashes and both were due to alt-tabbing to other windows (for help etc)

windows updates, update your video card driver, run a defrag, get and run a good registry cleaner, etc.

These (along with some additional steps) just might help. It's very important to keep your operating system up to date. Video card drivers are otherwise the first thing to check, but honestly sometimes the most recent drivers are NOT the best (ATI anyone?). Try rolling back to a previous driver release for your card and see if that helps. If not, slap the latest back on. Unless you are using an SSD, make sure you defrag (I would recommend once a week, schedule it sometime in the early-early morning so it won't interfere with use). I've seen defrags work wonders on peoples' machines, depending on how severely it was needed. Another thing you might want to try is run an error check on your physical hard drive. If a drive's health is deteriorating it can lead to some very strange behavior.

Registry cleaners I would be a bit wary of. If you do run a registry cleaner such as CCleaner, make absolutely sure you create a registry backup so you can undo things if your comp decides to lose its mind.

Out of curiosity, what are your system specs? And are your hardware temps getting very high during play?

You need to post your system specs.

I have had one single CTD in close to 100 hours of play....

Theres a whole lot of evil crashing to desktop bugs. One that pisses me off is when equiping companions with magic res gear and hitting them with magic res or certain weapon instantly crashed the game.

Yes, as others have stated, it is almost certainly your specific machine, not the game itself. It doesn't matter that other pieces of software, games or productivity, work okay, but Skyrim has problems on your system. As an example, I had to uninstall Divx on one of my systems because it was causing weird problems. The same system runs everything else fine, including Skyrim.

You can see hundreds of thousands of people playing Skyrim on PC based on Steam's statistics. People have to stop blaming development companies for software that doesn't work on their specific setup when it does work on the majority of systems. Any complex system of any kind will have problems, and these are very complex systems.

I have had a number of crashes myself, in fact just had one like 2 minutes ago. However, I am believe I know the problem in my case. I didn't have any crashes at all prior to disabling the Bethesda logo startup video. And I did that by simply changing the file extension for the video. I suspect that if I restored it the crashes would go away.

I've had one CTD. Running on a Dell Studio laptop with the ATI video card update. Machine is at least 2 years old (dang, I've lost count) and handles the game on medium settings OK.

doesn't have to be a case of not powerful enough
could be compatibility issues with your drivers or something like that

Try http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1285418-new-laa-4gb-launcher/. Did wonders for me once the crashing started 10 hours in. 8 hr straight gaming sessions without a crash.

Hmm, I will try all the defragging etc, and my drivers are up to date. The specs are as follows: AMD Athlon II X4 Processor 3.00 GHz, 4.00 GB Ram, and I'm using an NVIDIA GeForce GTS 450. My computer is well ventilated and clean of dust also. I've never had a problem running anything that is graphically challenging before, even on the highest settings.

I don't want to seem cold-blooded, but... welcome to Bethesda Softworks games.

Morrowind crashed.
Oblivion crashed.
Fallout 3 crashed.
Fallout: New Vegas crashed.
Skyrim crashes.
TES VI will crash.
Fallout 4 will crash.

They make these huge, expansive, incredible games... and sometimes they crash. I'm sure they hate it as much as we do, and they're doing everything they can to stop it, but it happens in every game. There isn't necessarily anything wrong with your computer, although taking steps to ensure that you're up to date with drivers and what have you is always a good idea.

The underlined "this" is a link to something that may eliminate or at least help lessen the frequency of CTDs. Worth a shot.

8Gb DDR 3
ATI HD 6870 1Gb
Windows 7 64 Bit

ATI Driver Catalyst 11.9 (if that helps?)
