Getting chased by multiple dragons

Post » Thu Dec 02, 2010 7:16 pm

In one of the articles I noticed

One of our designers actually put in a random event I encountered, where I ended up being chased by three dragons and I thought "who the hell did this?" I felt like Frodo in Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and was really frightened. So I asked him to remove it.

Why would you remove this? It actually elicited an emotion from you. There should be situations where it is wiser to run the hell away.

I think its because the dragons would either need to be weakened to level it out, or the player would die/be forced to run blindly through the woods.

There's a saying I heard concerning game development... "Any time a player can blame their failures on the game design, the designers failed."

Being chased by multiple dragons is one such instance.

They're dragons, not cliffracers.

Dragons = somewhat rare and awesome fights (purportedly, Skyrim isn't out yet :) )

Cliffracers = bane of any morrowinder's existence which exist solely to kill low-level players with impunity

I want a challenge, something most games lack these days. Hopefully we can tweak this through the console or a modder makes this happen.

Because it is an unfair situation. Three dragons attacking you at once is way too much. There's no chance of survival. Running away from a dragon isn't supposed to be easy. Getting away from one is supposed to be rather difficult. Three is not a reasonable scenario.

So you've killed your three dragons, after looking on UESP to get the "best build" and the best loot drops, and power gaming your way to this awesome character who can kill three of them. What's the game going to throw at you next? One dragon? great. I'm bored now.

Todd was actually told that they are unable to remove that feature - just dial it down a notch is what occured

Doesn't matter, it'll surely be modded in soon after if they don't include it in the vanilla.

Removing multiple dragons chasing you is the same thing as toning it down. Either way, multiple dragons will not chase us.

I think I saw an interview with Todd where he said there canl be two dragons fighting you at once. I could be wrong, does anyone know if this is true?

I started a topic about this recently, but noone replied.

Basically, I think there should be a dragon-specific difficulty slider which effects how aggressive dragons are. Setting the slider to minimum would make the dragons fairly peaceful unless provoked... while setting it to maximum would result in multiple dragons often going for you at once upon sight and being incredibly difficult to kill when your level is low.

I would love that, running for my life from three dragons...that's pretty epic, as long as it's a fairly rare occurrence, I wouldn't want it to happen every single time I came across a dragon.

That's just par for the course. I don't remember any TES game ever throwing the equivalent of three boss enemies at you all at once, so I don't really know why you'd expect them to start now, especially when it's supposed to be a challenge to have a one-on-one fight with a dragon. And typically, nothing stands up to super characters. Even Vivec could go down in about three swings if you built your character up enough. So I'm not sure what you're expecting.

I would get rather frustrated if it was a random event and i have to run for 3 days to lose those damn dragons

I have one problem with this. When did dragons become non-territorial? Are skyrim dragons going to ignore each other? I would think it would be smart to lure a chasing dragon into another dragons territory to get it off your back, they should engage each other. If two dragons are chasing you I would hope they would either start a fight with each other (shouldn't have to end in death, just a who's better match) or you offer one of them an easier meal by cutting down something along the way...if all else fails chug that chameleon potion you have been holding onto and hide out.

From that interview quote, it sounds to me as if three are too many. It also sounds like fighting two at once can happen. I'd rather have it that way than fight three dragons they had to make weaker just so three could be fought. You know what I mean? :)

In the trailer, it looks like fighting one was pretty scary so I know I'll be scared for two.

Definately yes. Reason for this? You're not going to become high-level enough to fight dragons for awhile, it's not like they are going to be the cliffracers of Skyrim.

I didn't suggest you fight 3. If they're some really dangerous encounters, then you should run. Use invisibility spells/potions. Find a nook and sneak away. Get into the nearest cave/ruin. Use divine intervention.(I really hope this returns...) Heroic stupid should not be the mold that they expect all characters to fall into. Yes you should be scared for your life if you see a dragon; these are servants of an aedra that has consistently destroyed the world in the past.

You should have to actually think about whether or not you can handle a fight and act accordingly. One thing I found annoying in Oblivion was I could go into any cave, any area, and be guaranteed to plow through it with little to no challenge, especially at level 1. Unless you were intentionally screwing over your stats/skills, enemies were ridiculously easy or annoying(Barely hurts you but has ridiculous amounts of health).

Never really felt threatened in Fallout 3 either. You have to almost be trying to fail, to lose.

These dragons are not classical ones. They are Alduins agents, very powerful, but still doing what Alduin told

Fighting two at once would be fun but three at once would be hell. Especially considering the fact that if you use any dragon shout I think you have to go through the cool down period before you can use any others.

I think a rare 2 versus 1 fight would be cool though.

I Would like a Special Dungeon that's the Hide-out of Alduin with Alot Dragons in the Last Main Quest & then the Boss is Alduin With the Hardest fight you can ever Imagine

This makes it a Big Challenge

I'd say yes, multiple dragons can chase, but it doesn't seem likely. You don't usually hear about flocks of dragons unless they all of a common purpose and someone is directing them, most likely akatosh will be directing them in this game, but I believe most of your encounters with dragons will be one on one.

I liked how you could do this with Supermutant Behemoths in Fallout 3 but it was normally hard to setup an encounter between them. I wouldn't be suprised if it was possible in Skyrim with dragons.
