Getting frustrated with the game

Post » Fri Sep 19, 2014 3:33 am

Everytime i try to play i always seem to get frustrated and quit. I keep on wanting to me a build somewhat like a paladin one hander heavy armor block and restoration. But everytime i start i am either getting two shoted or i lose interest. Im at level 10 right now with all steel armor and sheild and going into a random dungeon just means me getting killed in two hits. I really dont like doing blacksmithing or enchanting either. Can anyone tell me what im doing wrong or give any beginner tips?

Turn the difficulty down.

Bring followers.

Time your blocks/block bash to counter power attacks.

Invest in block enchantments/resist magic enchantments.

Also, some wise words from the fellow members of the Companions: Don't let them surround you, try to funnel them, let them come to you one at a time.

Two-shotted at level 10? What are you going up against? Ah, spriggans. They do poison damage and I doubt you have any ring/amulet with poison resistance. Pay a visit to the alchemy shops, they should have a poison resist potion or two.

Anyway, to add to what Vaen has already posted, the first 10 (maybe 20) levels are best to be invested in health, regardless of character build. Saves you from a lot of pain.

Avoid spriggans at lower levels, their magic can be deadly. If you need to kill them for a quest though, then see about buying some decent resist magic potions, and block bash their attacks to interrupt them.

Where are you seeing Spriggans at level 4? In that case, I guess it's a matter of just being careful where you wander early in the game.

Along comes an enemy with a high attack power which locks you into a kill cam you could have easily avoided, and shouldn't have happened anyway due to having such a vast amount of health left.

So much for all that health  lol. Story of my life on the console version... In the end I just put whatever I wanted and learned to either stay the hell out of range, or keep my shield up.

Strange, I haven't disabled them on my PC version and I rarely gotten killmoved by anything in the game. But then again, I wasn't letting the character's health go that low.

It's also a fresh start (56hrs save) so, my memories about his early levels are recent

Don't be surprised. You can even find Wispmothers at level 1, if you go to the wrong place.

Almost forgot about that. If I was you, I would put perk points on both two handed & light armor, as they level.

In the end it's down to you, but I always go for damage perks first since the armour rating bonuses from perks do next to nothing unless you have smithed the shi- out of your gear to begin with, or have gear with a high base armour rating. The best defence is a good offence.

Ah I was talking about the console version. PC version is fine since you can disable kill cams ect, but on the console version not a day would go by where I would get kill cam locked despite having above 50% health... quite rage inducing.

The worst one would have to be where I had about 60%+ health, I was in the Knifepoint Ridge mine, and the Orc bandit leader locked me into a brutal warhammer kill cam... traumatizing, especially since I had just pushed the button to block him right as it happened. :swear:

That's what I'm telling you. Enemy killcams are NOT disabled in my game and in 56 hours, I was killcam'd once, maybe twice. The one I remember clearly, was when I did Treva's watch at level 10 (the character is now level 65)

On the other hand, I don't gamble. I always carry ~10 health potions, to get me out of hairy situations.

Hmm. I just started a new character last weekend and played up through level 15 so far without trouble. The character was wearing no armor and using ranged spells and dealt with not one but two spriggens that he encountered at about level 11, without incident. I think my character is using The Lord sign stone that gives

Spoiler
25% magic resistance
so that may have helped with the spriggens.

The issue you may be having is that armor gives very little protection to physical attacks in the beginning (and no protection to magical attacks). An AR of 100, which is pretty high for low level character will only give yuu about a 10% damage reduction. You need an AR of at least 250-300 before you notice much damage reduction, and from there the level of protection goes up pretty quickly with every increase in AR. Here is a link to a http://www.uesp.net/wiki/File:SR-graph-Armor_and_Durability.pngshowing the protection armor gives based on your AR. You can see that for the first couple hundred points of AR, the protection is minor and the curve is pretty flat, but then around 250-300, the curve slopes steeply upwards and protection increases substantially.

So, as you can see, your level 4 character wearing a full suit of heavy armor is not getting a whole lot of protection. The main benefit of wearing heavy armor is increasing the skill so you can eventually get your AR above 300 where you start noticing a significant damage reduction.

The problem with wering heavy armor is that it is heavy, which makes it more difficult to dodge and keep your distance and run from enemies. I find that keeping your distance and using ranged attacks work well against tougher opponents. Also use terrain to your advantage to seperate multiple opponents into smaller numbers so you can take them on one by one.

Learn how to bash to break an opponents attack. A bash will break a ward or an enemy spell or interrupt an attack, allowing you to get in some quick hard hits.

And finally, if you are still having trouble, put all your points into health until you get to the point where you stop having trouble.

Good luck with your game.

In the future, you need to post questions like these to the cheats, hints and spoilers forum, and not general discussion. We can help you there much more easily than we can here since we don't have to worry about posting spoilers for other new players.

At level 4, spriggans are best avoided - they're just too powerful for you. Besides their own attacks,

Spoiler
they can also summon any animals in the area to come to their aid and you can find yourself mobbed by a bunch of bears, wolves and other creatures. When you do fight them, you need to concentrate on putting them down as quickly as you can, since they can quickly regenerate their own health. Having said all that, spriggans are weak to fire, so if you have any weapons or spells that do fire damage, those should be used against them.
