My thoughts from a similar thread, slightly modified:
"Well, even if the Nords are not an exactly equivalent to the Norse, I do believe that Nords are "inspired" by the Norse.
Resultantly, I look to Viking mythology and history to include the various Eddur, studies of archaeology and anthropology to create an historical image. I can then compare that image to life in Skyrim, knowing fully that Nirn is not Earth.
As far as being able to change the cosmetic appearance of one's player character, I know from my inquiries into Viking history, that they were very concerned about their appearance, groomed daily, washed their hands before meals, bathed often, and had saunas, etc.
Also available to them, were combs, razors, tweezers, and ear cleaners. Further, they had methods to "bleach" their hair color, to include beards. Those individuals of modest, or greater means, often had servants attend to them in matters of hygene, and grooming, etc.
With respect to cosmetics, those were available to much of civilization prior to that time historians have labeled the Viking Era, roughly from the late 700's, to about 1066 A.D. Also, note that the Vikings were skilled traders.
With magika, or not, it is not lore breaking to consider that some minor cosmetic changes could indeed occur, and that some sort of in-game shop could be included.
The ability to modify one's character was in FO3, and I would be surprised if something similar was not in Skyrim. It seemed to be a popular feature.
Personally, I am more in favor of being able to change hair style, color, and length, and to be able to modify beards, apply cosmetics and other markings, etc.
I am not in favor of racial or gender changes. For me, that would be lore breaking."
