Getting Her to Play

Post » Mon Jan 31, 2011 1:23 am

Sorry, mate, can I first say, congratulations, you know, well done and everything. Secondly, this woman, who comes from having virtually no gaming experience now wants to game with you in the pursuit of better happiness and fulfillment in you relationship? Mate, she is a keeper. ;)

Definately Mirror's edge, that game is awesome, and yes, you know, lead character is female, plus can freerun/kick butt, and it's not an overly violent, intense game, that is console and pc, plus a LOT of fun.

Maybe some sort of co-op game? *Gasp* Portal 2! Yes... You know, angle the whole puzzle aspect etc. So much fun and hilarity in that game.

amnesia dark descent

 are you on crack? My boyfriend tries to get me to play that and I absolutely hate it every time he tries. I hate it even more when he succeeds.

When I first started gaming (around age 9 if you don't include Putt Putt, the tycoon series and Freddie Fish), I started off with PC so I don't know how much you want to rely on that. I played Dungeon Siege, Starcraft, Quake, Half Life.. but I suppose I was just a weird kid. I can't express enough how much I love Dragon Age nowadays. I think she'd like the experience. Just gotta avoid Zevran and whatnot :L The blood isn't too bad, at least I don't think so.

Sims is a bad idea. You show them that first, and they compare it to every other game you try to show them. "I don't have to shoot people in the Sims" "Why can't I create my own character like in the Sims?" "I liked building a house in the Sims" "Herp derpa derp herp"

Freddi Fish and Putt Putt FTW. Pyjama Sam anybody? And if Dragon Age is appealing, maybe Mass Effect series?

Hmmmmm. How about Braid? It's a relatively simple platformer (...well, until you get to the later levels), but it's incredibly beautiful and has a remarkably deep, complex story. And a kickass soundtrack.
And in the same 'simple but gorgeous' vein, Limbo. It's one of the best games I've played this year, and it's the understated quality that makes it so good. It has a very surreal, dreamlike quality, and the animation reminds me of shadow puppetry.

Braid is one I was thinking of mentioning, too (for the same reasons you stated).

STALKER
metro 2033
amnesia dark descent
mount and blade warband
deus ex human resources will be out by then
minecraft (i just started playing this game and its freaking awesome)
star craft 2

I think STALKER has too many complications and stuff. Keeping track of what you're doing, where you need to be, dodging anomalies.... too much. Maybe when she's got a solid grounding and is fairly confident with FPS's.
M&B occurred to me, but it'll be a while before she's ready for the combat (and combat is 90% of the game). The player is rather fragile early on, due to both low skill and lack of gear.
I gather Penumbra (preceded Amnesia, so I'd go with it first) is is largely just mental work (little need for reflexes, etc.), so it'd be an option, if she's up for a psychological (you get scared, not startled) horror game.
Haven't played/don't know much about the others.

Besides what's already been mentioned here, I'd suggest Pikmin 2 since it is pretty simple to pick up and lacks the first's time limit.

Great game, but I would not recommend it as a first game.

It was my 2nd PS2 game. :) Before that, the only combat console game I had played was Golden Axe on the Sega Genesis (and some of the Disney games, like Lion King and Aladdin). anolog sticks? What are those? Oh, awesome!

Er, but I will concede that it is can be a rather gory game. Of course, after dying 5 times to a Medusa, it's rather satisfying to rip off her head.

EDIT: Actually, Primal was my very first PS2 game.

Little Big Planet is a definitive winner for most new to gaming women, I got my girlfriend into gaming with it. The cuteness + simple gameplay is perfect for people not used to gaming. Now my girlfriend is playing through the KOTOR series. She even quoted star wars to me the other day. The power of Little Big Planet as a starter platform will never erode.

Any cultured gamer should play the classic adventure games  .
For starters, she should play Monkey Island. The remakes of the first two are fairly new, and they don't change anything other than the graphics, and also add terrific voice-acting. Then she should play Grim Fandango, which is pretty much the holy grail of all adventure games. Then, she should play all of the seasons of Sam & Max. All of those games have (relatively) simple puzzles, but if she feels up for it she should play the Myst games. A lot more complicated puzzle-wise, and very serious.

EDIT: And she should play Crimson Skies. Just because that game was awesome.

Agreed. The Sims isn't really a good starter game if you want her to try a lot of genres, especially since most games don't try to fufill whatever niche the Sims crawled into. Try having her play an old Call of Duty or Medal of Honor game. Show her the Sims when she get's addicted to Minecraft.

No no no, you want to start her off with nice games like the Sims and ease her into the masculine stuff, you can't slap her round the face with really boyish games like Halo and Call of Duty, she'll get bored and frustrated at them.

OP, why not get her to play the games you play? That would make the most sense.

Show her a game you like, if she doesn't like it; just reload a previous save in your life and show her a different game instead. Keep doing this until you find a reaction you like from her.

Well, if for some reason her mesh starts showing up as missing it's not the end of the world. Just reinstall the mesh for your GF mod. Or, update to the better bodies version of your GF mod.

I dont think Zevran would be an issue, shows diversity, and if they dislike the character they can get rid of them.

Today quoting star wars, tomorrow kicking lurkers in dead space 2.

Repetative game choice (there is no real change miss black ops, buy MW3 this year in november. Atleast reach added jetpacks, because they make everything better) and sixist/racist community good choice(granted thats XBL in general, but I heared more people in CoD than halo.

I know this thread is around 1 month dead, so I apologize for necro posting.

However, there are two games that I think are missing from these people's lists and they can both be found on the PS2 (with an alternative on the 360)

Katamari Damacy - PS2 (and less so Beautiful Katamari on 360) - This game has simple controls to help her familiarize herself with both anolog sticks and controlling the camera in a 3-d environment, while offering up simple intuitive gameplay in a vibrant and colorful world that is presented with a great sense of humor.

I believe this game offered a 2-player mode, I don't recall 100% though.

Timesplitters 2 - PS2

This game also has a great sense of humor. Fun visuals coupled with an easy to digest sci-fi narrative make this a great "pick up and play" game. The controls are easily accesible to the novice gamer while still offering satisfaction and rewards for the more experienced. You can play through the whole campaign co-operatively, as well as set up various local multiplayer game modes with bots of varying difficulty levels (the easiest of which a novice will be able to find success against). In multiplayer you even get to select what character you play as, with several different male and female characters (some of the female avatars are quite cartoonish in their figure if you get my drift :blush2:) . Not violent in it's presentation, it plays like a saturday morning cartoon, while taking you to various settings in time. There are also a myriad of unlocks that the two of you can work together to achieve (including a couple of monkeys to be used as playable characters!).

(One of our favorite things to do when playing with my little brother, who at the time was maybe 11-12, was to cover him in remote detonated mines (with friendly fire turned off, of course) and send him running into a group of enemies! He found this to be extremely funny.)

Timesplitters 2 can also serve as a launching pad into the vast pool of FPS shooter games, allowing her to gain confidence with an FPS control scheme in a lower tension, more cheerful environment.

I think both of these games will fit your non-violent, co-op experience requests.

* Also I just remembered, when attempting to get my fiancee to play, Lego Harry Potter for 360 was a great title. She is a big fan of Harry Potter, so for her seeing the locations that she easily recognizes, and playing through the game with her favorite characters was great fun. The game is a charming puzzle game with light combat and some platforming elements. Very easy to jump right into, and well suited to both short and marathon gaming sessions.
