Getting Into The Elder Scrolls

How to start playing a TES game:
1) turn on your PC (or XBOX360 in my case)
2) open disc tray
3) insert disc
4) say goodbye to your friends/pets/parents/and anyone else you think may miss you

I don't know how many RPG's you have played so the order of the two games will be dependant upon how patient you are with games. If you can deal with the graphics and combat system, start with Morrowind. If you are more used to playing FPS style action games, then you may want to start with Oblivion and then go to Morrowind. Either way, both are incredibly fun games and will give you years of enjoyment.

No matter which order you choose, prepare for an experience that's different from the video game norm. You don't "beat" the games, you "live" them. Just go about doing whatever you feel that your character would do under the circumstances, and whatever happens, happens. If you want to dive headfirst into the Main Quest, you can, or just ignore it. It'll wait, forever if need be, and there's plenty else to do. Perhaps TOO much to do, and still keep a real life going in the mean time.

As for mods, Morrowind in particular can benefit from a decent graphics replacer or two, plus the patches, but I wouldn't add any gameplay changes until you try the "plain vanilla" experience.

Both are good in their own right, but for slightly different reasons, so it's all about personal taste.

If you play Oblivion, you'll want...

Its hard to say, both games got tons of mods.

I would say the following:
If you a RPG pen and paper, start by morrowind. The concept behind, stats skill and combat won t seems strange to you, the lore and environment is better.

If you more action oriented, even if it is ARPG, then go oblivion, stats and skills mean less, finger action much more, there s less lore and stuff to read (even if reading is always optional).

How to get into TES:
1) Start new forum topic requesting educated opinions on whether to start with Morrowind or Oblivion.
2) Sit back in horror as forum-goers tear themselves apart debating the merits of Morrowind or Oblivion.
3) Decide that the ES fanbase is too volatile and abandon thoughts of playing Morrowind or Oblivion.
:P

I would personally recommend starting with Morrowind. Lots of people will say that Oblivion will be easier to get into, and this is true, but if you start with Oblivion and attempt to go back and play Morrowind, you may find that you are now incapable of appreciating it. Start with Morrowind just to give it a try, and if you can't stand it, then move on to Oblivion.

I would also strongly recommend playing both games without mods the first time around. That way, not only will you be able to appreciate the original game, but you'll then establish what mechanics you like, and what mechanics you would change and why. Mods are awesome, but do at least one vanilla play through.

Ya, I wish i did this, but instead I played Oblivion before Morrowind  , now whenever I play Morrowind it just makes me want to play Oblivion.

You say that as if it's a bad thing.

If you do start with the earlier games, don't be put off Oblivion if you don't like them too much

Not that you shouldn't, but they really are tailored towards different gamers in some ways

Funny, I started with Oblivion and like Morrowind just as much. Whenever I play Morrowind, I barely ever think of Oblivion.
