I'm getting killed too much, how do I get better?

Post » Mon Jan 18, 2016 6:11 am

I'm just getting killed so much I don't want to play anymore. I thought I could play like Skyrim and sneak everywhere. I have optimized my character for it. But it just isn't happening. The game seems to really be supporting a head on battle. I'm not even having any fun sneaking around when I do sneak around. I love sneaking around and stealing everyone's stuff and selling it to blackmarket NPC's......... IT just isn't the same. Am I doing it wrong, I feel like the village idiot right now. How do I play this character better? Or should I just stop and start over, it's only 3 days.......

Here are my stats:

1 strength

5 perception

3 endurance

6 charisma

6 intelligence

10 agility

3 luck

Should I start over, or am I just that bad?

your probably trying to strike out too soon. there are lots of passive ways to lvl in order to increase your health and get perks to boost your weapon skills. You also need to take advantage of weapon and armor modding.

finish a few more hours in your current play-through and get used to it before you restart

Use Vats a lot

Also- the game starts out harder than most Fallout 3 players are used to - but you have to take it slow and grind through and gain some levels. Then it will start to even out before it gets REALLY easy.

My best advice is enjoy the challenge before you start 1 shotting everything in front of you in a couple days lol

Focus on one weapon type and utilize the sneak attack bonuses. Your high AGI will give you plenty of AP in VATS, so bump up your PER for VATS accuracy. Then it's a matter of sneaking around, popping headshots and fading away, saving VATS for when you get caught. Carry a suppressed sniping weapon as your main weapon and something powerful and indiscriminate for close range (eg .44 or shotty).

I'd love to tell you combat is avoidable in FO4, but it just isn't - you can get by for a while, but eventually a combat build will be required.

If your gonna go for a stealth build gun nut perk is gonna be one of your best friends although it takes a bit to get to the level needed the ability to build suppressors for firearms is a must have. also put some points into stealth helps out a lot early on and if your gonna be using firearms primarily 2 to 3 more points into perception is a solid investment

You slow down. Get some levels by building stuff for example. The first few quests are relatively easy. Also, know the level boundaries of the areas. They are somewhat floating, but generally the farther you go away from sanctuary in semi-circles, the tougher enemies gets. The rivers, lakes and bridges are usually good indicators as well, when an area is about to shift in difficulty.

I've uploaded a map, that shows the estimated level "requirement" for a given area, in colour coding. If you don't want location names etc, you can leave the zoom function be, and just look at the colour codings.

ps: I have another map as well, same as the above, but which also shows the various points of interest (magazines, bobbleheads etc.) if interested.

Oh no, I can't take credit for that. It was on a reddit post some time ago, but only for a short period, so I just snatched it up :D

You don't need 10 agility for a successful sneak...woulda lowered that, and put a few more into strength at least to get armorer..also 6 CHA is higher than I would have started..

I made a stealth character that used only combat knife up to level 19, no other weapons were ever used aside of explosives. You need a low weight in your armor, go slowly, get the blitz perk if you are melee, or shooting enemies from a long distance if you are a sniper. Actually I would suggest you to get rid of armor at all, I think the military fatigues are good because they add 2 agility, or the road leathers because they weight only 1. Walk when crouching to avoid getting detected. Whenever you kill someone get as far as you can from the area.

At least I did it that way, and make sure you use crits constantly.

Early in the game it's really easy to accidentally wander into areas where enemies are at a way higher level than you are. I stumbled across Saugus Ironworks really early in the game and totally got my ass handed to me like three times before deciding that I should just leave it be for a while and come back later.

Try leveling up a bit more doing less threatening things. There are some relatively easy side quests that you can access really early in the game to help gain some XP.

I'd love to see how you play, in practice. Either way, "a good offense is a good defense". :) Get Mister Sandman, Ninja and Deacon's relationship maxed. And then get a Silenced weapon, like The Deliverer. Havoc shall Ensue.

Join the Railroad as soon as possible so you get a suppressed pistol, hunting rifle, and ballistic weave. Two suppressed weapons and light armor are a must for sneak characters.

No it is not. Bobbleheads would be indicated by a star, while magazines would be indicated by yellow dots, and holotapes/special items would have blue dots. Look at the sign description in the right bottom corner.

Yes it is. I have it printed out in big format and it is hanging on my wall above my monitor :) Unfortunately, the author of the map haven't left a name on it, so can't give credit where it is due :(

Well, I dragged it off to my computer as well. It will live on, even if the author's name doesn't :)

Can you link the bobblehead etc one also?

I'd blame the low END stat, it determines your max HP and damage resistance.

Increase your END, and maybe take a couple "Lone Wanderer" perkz.

Some good tips above. To round it all out, here are some more:

1) Get each sneak perk as it comes available, till you get sneak 4 at level 23. That point at level 23 is the holy grail to a stealth build. Up till then, you have to 'walk-sneak', which is slow and annoying as hell, and gets you killed easily if you aren't real careful how you do it. Once you get the sneak 4 perk, you can 'run-sneak' without making any noise, so you can move in fast and attack and then hide a lot faster, without being heard and caught.

2) Use military fatigues, or minuteman uniform, as they will give you good stats and let you wear leather arm and leg pieces on top for more stats and whatnot. Get a point or two in the armorer perk, so you can make it shadowed armor- this adds to your stealthiness. Don't wear heavier armor, it makes more noise. Save up your caps and check out all the vendors you meet, some of them have legendary armor pieces that add nice stats in the agility/endurance/perception department. Those pieces can be modded to be shadowed, too.

3) Learn to use the stealth meter at the top of your screen. Keep one eye on it at all times while sneaking around an enemy. If the brackets start moving in towards the word in the center, whether it is 'hidden' or 'caution', then an enemy is starting to become more aware of the danger approaching... stop for a moment, as you are harder to spot when motionless. You'll soon get used to working that meter, sneaking, stopping, moving again, stopping, using cover between you and them, using shadows, etc., in order to get close enough to do what you need to do. And try to only move towards an enemy when they are facing away from you, if possible.

4) Play during game's night. Sneaking in the daylight is a deadman's game, until you have a lot of good gear and perks later on, anyway. I spend 95% of my gametime during the night cycle in the Commonwealth, just for that reason. You are WAY easier for them to spot between 6 am and 6 pm.

5) Adjust your early expectations. Later on, if you build up right, you can sneak up on a legendary deathclaw and steal its lunch money- but before you get to level 23 or so, you'll have to be a lot more patient, careful, and cautious. You won't be able to get up as close before being seen or heard, even if you do everything right. That's just the way it works. But if you do it right, you should hardly be dying at all.

6) Lose the follower! Or make them stay put somewhere safe when you are stealthing up on something. Nothing will give you away quicker than a dang follower.
