Getting knocked down

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 8:49 am

So, in the time-lapse video, the artist is drawing over a screenshot of the hero getting ready to battle some huge, powerful Yeti-like monster.

Now seeing as this game has Mammoths, Yetis, Dragons, etc. I would be HUGELY disappointed if they take a swing at you, and your character does the usual "Ohhhh" and magically slides back a few feet.

No, if that huge Yeti takes a full-force swing at me, I should go crashing into the side of the mountain next to me, or at least get thrown back/to the side or down to the ground, and I, as a player, should FEEL like some powerful monster just took a swing at me. If that thing attacks the PC and he just slides back and says "Ohh", I might throw my controller through my monitor..

It's called a troll, bro.
And yes, that would be cool.

I think this is one of those areas that future games need to focus their advancement. Combat systems have largely stagnated over the past 5 years, with a few additions like collision detection and location-based hit detection, etc. If a game were released in which physical impact translated into the physics of the combat prior to creature death, it would be far and away the best system out there. For instance, if I charge forward with a 90 strength Nord Barbarian using a Warhammer, and smash it into a Goblin, that Goblin should go flying backwards regardless of if the blow kills it or not. The flip side is that if I kill an opponent with an arrow, it shouldn't careen 20 feet backward like a locomotive struck it.

OT, but this got me thinking: Has there ever been a video game that allowed you to get pregnant?

I don't remember any. Even the Uderfrykte (spelling?) Matron would hit me, and my character would just slide back and be unable to do anything until the slide animation was over. It was terribly dissapointing. I want the attack to feel dynamic and painful, maybe some realistic camera shake/tilt, and some forceful and quick movement in the appropriate direction (based on the direction of the attack).

As long as it isn't as extreme as Euphoria where the slightest bump can make someone stumble around for 3-5 seconds before regaining their balance. Bumping into someone should be a bump, and getting sideswiped by a troll should knock you into the air and send you flying 10 feet or so.

Check out the new GI vid, there is a picture of a guy's feet in the air as his body hits the ground.

Good point. Didn't Euphoria power the "Backbreaker" football game?

Alot of the physics in that game are tremendous, however there are definitely visible instances where it is over-exaggerated. But I want to feel like I AM the character I'm playing, so I want appropriate camera movement (such as tilt and shake) and environmental interaction (such as the in Crysis 2 when you go under some falling water and the camera has water run down it realistically) would all do nothing but better the gaming experience and deepen immersion.

Edit: zen1966, that's what made me post this topic. I paused the video right when I saw that and made this topic.

And it could also be skill based, for example a player with high agility and acrobatics gets a chance to land on his feet (like a cat or something) instead of crashing on the floor =D
Someone with high endurance, though not agile enough to land well would recover faster, thus getting back on his feet quicker and stuff.
It's weird, I was just about to make a thread about knock backs hehe.

No need, I was just clarifying.

Yeah I hope they get this right. It would be quite disappointing but titilating at the same time to get rammed off a cliff by a big, hairy elephant.

Read the article on combat from GI, lots of interesting tidbits related to this there.

"If you're not careful on defense you may get knocked around, losing your balance and leaving yourself exposed for a damaging blow that can turn the tide of the battle. Knowing when to block, when to strike, and when to stand your ground is key to prevailing in combat."

Sounds interesting. Regardless of knockback distance, though, I'd love to see the ability to roll to the side and rapidly get up based on your skills and attributes. It's always annoying to see your character slowly climbing to his feet even though he's being actively attacked.

except that that thing with water is probably the most unrealistic effect EVER.
who the hell can keep their eyes open with there's water literally hitting them. what would be more realistic is if the character had trouble seeing because of it, not just water flowing down

but I get you point. camera effects are really a nice thing for immersion

That's random, but if you want to stretch things a bit than sims 2 and 3 did.

If NPCs have perks getting knocked down could be an unpleasant surprise. There was some guy in OB ( Falcar? ) who had the blade skill paralyse move at level one. Give a punishing Knockdown to the odd bandit or two ( you expect it from larger monsters ), and every encounter has you worried it could turn nasty any second, which imho is a feeling this game ought to give.

And Fable 2 and 3, although you never spend any time pregnant.

I like OP's idea, but I think that there should only be a few creatures capable of taking a mid or high level character off their feet. By all means low level low strength low agility characters should get knocked around by trolls and up, but once we get moderate strength I think we should be fairly sturdy (obviously huge enemies like dragons can still knock you down) and high agility should mean that you can land on your feet easily.

Or if you block a really heavy hit from said creature with your shield, your should hurt your arm, like limb damage.

I also think you should be disarmed by big hits, or if you have a low strength and/ or a heavy weapon.

Well in Crysis it makes sense because they have helmets.
