Getting more out of the operative.

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 5:57 pm

I have every op skill and love them all. I have every uni skill. I don't care for any other class, I like the ingenious skills the op brings to the field.

Not having buffs and so on nerfs exp. Comm hacks and firewalls are all well and good but don't add up to much. Remoting a turret doesn't pay crap for exp.

I can be the best killer in the room and still suffer for it. I know why this is and don't much care - but would like experienced ops to put in their two cents on how to get more out of this class. I think it can be done and a thread to discuss it could benefit us all. Thanks.

Disguise is a big one because of how useful it can be for killing as well as the bonus XP - remember to select the Disguise objective on the wheel before actually doing it - those small bonuses add up.

Well-placed Caltrops rake the XP in pretty well. Also, running defense objectives when you don't have something better to do helps A LOT. Just stay in the area and get XP for it.

What body type do you use? I'm Light, so I rely on speed and fluidity to get from objective to objective most of the time. When you're Medium, you can more easily guard an objective, and even better still with Heavies - but you can't move between the better-scoring objectives as efficiently as a Light body does. The best tactics are based not only on your class, but also body type. Keep that in mind as well.

I have to duck away from defense objectives a lot because if I take a few hits, I run out of health, and not dying is often important when you're defending something.

Of course, that leads me to another point - don't be afraid of death - if there's no Medics close, or they're bogged down by enemy fire, just go into the next spawn wave. If there's a Medic, but you're surrounded by enemies, take the wave - even if they've thrown a syringe. If you're only a couple of seconds from succeeding in a defense, but there's an enemy about to disarm your explosive, or whatever it is you're defending, a suicidal rush will often be enough to either gun them down or draw their attention - either way, you finish the objective and the enemy fails. A glorious death in completion of an objective may not actually get you any glory, but it tends to get you that defense XP. Also, it moves you one step closer to the next opportunity to have your own objective to complete.

Cortex bomb FTW. Thanks for the reply, I run light body type. I made another thread on freerunning too.

I didn't know that selecting disguise/etc actually netted me extra exp. That seems a little clunky but if it works why not?

If you're just looking for ways to get more exp, try grabbing a disguise and then just keep marking (have to use aim button) enemies over and over again. I can rack up about 10,000 points as the resistance in Container City on the first objective. Granted, this is against bots but you get the idea.

10,000 xp is savage, but that wouldn't do much for the team. Perhaps I can experiment some more. I mainly use disguise to hack turrets and knife people in the back.

I guess I misunderstood. To make an operative valid you really need to focus on diverting enemy attention and being a recon element for your team. I focus on capping command posts, spotting mines and hacking turrets. Really it seems best to avoid conflict until your team needs help at choke points. My rule of thumb as an operative: If you're not annoying or distracting the enemy from their primary objective, you're probably not doing your job.

Wallhack is does everything for the team. they can kill enemies seen through walls far easier.

My favorite class... oh yes.

I never started out not thinking I'd like the operative but it IS a bunch of fun.

Just remember that until you get silent running you SHOW UP ON ENEMY RADAR WHEN RUNNING! This is very important as it gives you away outwright.

The caltrops to cover your retreat, sticky nades to deny an area (it only goes away when shot or run over, so you can see if anyone has gone the way its placed). With all the info it gives the team and confusion it brings, it is a great class and there needs to be at least 1 good operative working every round. EMP nades are invaluable and 1 good operative working behind enemy lines taking out key players/turrets WILL turn the tide of a battle.

Also get good with slide + knife. It kills faster than butting the guy on the ground, essencially a 1 shot if you can get it right.

to quote another post i made...

I'm consistently making top scores with my operative. Not long ago i got 9000 points in an online campaign match, making top score with out ever switching so its very possible.... Theyre a very aggressive char, and need to be treated as such.

Pro Tips...

Kill the [censored] out of things,

Disguise WHENEVER you reasonably can

Hack turrets. it really svcks for the enemy.

Spot mines whenever you see them

Use disguise effectively, get into enemy camps, behind their line, rush some one and melee, sneak into command posts and steal them... Get it?

use those sticky grenades when you can

CALTROPS!!! FREAKIN USE EM!!! Place them where the enemy will be buzzing around like bees. A good land can net 5-700 xp... At least 100 if you did marginally alright...

Be aggressive when it comes to your objectives. Trust your team and just hack as best you can, but open fire if your in direct danger non the less...

Your objectives are particularly hard. Not only do they take forever, but they can be reversed, slowed, and even undone... Rely on your allies, and pray if your in SP that they actually do their job...

Understand the concept of the operative, what their mission is. They make the enemies lives considerably more difficult. One or two that are actively going in will shread an otherwise cohesive enemy line, and throw it into general disarray. I'd go as far as to say that, in a well setup match with intelligent players, the team with the most effective operatives will likely be the team that wins. Thats how much they effect the tide of battle...

Actually, I've found a way to really boost your character by exploiting the Disguise ability.

Make a Freeplay Private Match for the map Resort, make the teams 1 vs. 1 and on Easy. You will want to be Resistance.

Quickly, blow the first two objectives as Soldier. Once the bot is at its final spot, you should have well over 20 minutes on the timer. Capture the Health Command Post, and hack the terminal to 99%.

The Security's spawn is right above the terminal and he almost always hops down at the same spot. You can kill him, melee to force him to respawn, and use Disguise on his dead body.

Don't forget to actually hack the terminal for the +15% when time is low. I average 17,000 exp per match with very little effort. I need to make a youtube vid of this.

I've noticed that in a few maps there are certain times when getting to a nice vantage point with a light rifle is quite useful for your team. Spotting enemies for your allies and taking a few potshots at low health targets can net you some nice xp and really help your teammates out. Nets about 50 exp per spot.

Another point to make on the objective wheel - you can just point at the objective you want and tap the objective wheel button to quick-select an objective - for consoles, aim for a corpse in line of sight and tap up on the d-pad.
