Getting A New TV

Post » Wed Jan 05, 2011 3:58 am

Well things are tight right now at my house and unfortunately the TV is starting to go on us. We've had this TV for some time and it is a tough little thing even surviving a lightning strike. It's one of the old screen 36" TVs made by JVC, but as mentioned it's getting old. Right now today I tried to get it to turn on and it was making a loud whining sound then took about 30sec to 1min 30 seconds to come on. Have a newer cable box, but still use that Coax Cable hook up.

Should I go with Plasma, LCD, or LED-LCD screens? Also is there anything I should be concerned about when dealing with them? Money wise I can't afford to shell out $1200+ for a new TV, but I don't find $500 to $600 out of the question for a TV that will last 7 to 10 years. (Our current one has lasted about 8 to 11 years on us)

Plasma hasn't really been worth it for a long time now, since they all have a short lifespan despite advances. The upside is that I think they're cheaper because of it.

That said, LED screens are the bee's-knees right now. They look amazing, they're thin, and they use less power. If you want the best, LED is it. I'd say look for 1080p, or at the very least 720p, and stay away from 1080i or 720i if you can manage it.

If you don't want to skip over tried and true older technology, DLP TV's are usually a cheaper option for good quality HDTV's

In my expeience (being the owner of a 56" DLP), those TV's usually cost about as much as an LCD or plasma half it's size.

This is true. We had a gigantic DLP TV when I was in Texas. Problem is after about 4 years it got to looking really dark and took longer and longer to turn on. The thing about DLP is that you need to replace the bulbs every 3+ years to get the best experience.

Thanks for the selection steam I see the one you are talking about and i'm curious if I should go for that one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16889005157. It's slightly bigger and would only cost around $229 which doesn't sound too bad. However I http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16889005144 one because of all of the connectors that it has on it. Would be sweet to get one I could hook my laptop up to through a DVI since my HDMI is messed up. (About a 15" difference and i'm sitting about 9 to 12' away from the TV. Current one as mentioned is a 36" TV

The upside is that I think they're cheaper because of itthey show deeper blacks, and don't have a viewing angle problem like some LCD tvs do, you know like if you wanted to put one in a large room.
