Getting NPC's to ride horses.

Post » Fri Jun 14, 2013 8:47 am

I have a scene where I want an NPC to ride up on a horse, get off, say/do some stuff, then get back on the horse and ride away. Simple enough, right?

Well, I can't get the thing to work. Not even a little bit. The horse and NPC grind up to the stopping point (NPC on foot) trying to run through each other. Then the NPC stands there sliding around up against the horse and eventually calls it good and moves on to the 'do/say stuff'. At the end he simply rubs up against the horse again for like 15 seconds then they both wander off together all awkwardly towards the exit point.

I'm currently using a travel package with the 'Ride Horse if Possible' flag ticked as I was told to simply do that a very long time ago when I asked. (Like... a year ago?) However I will now begin digging into vanilla scenes with horse riding (intro is only one that comes to mind...) and other package procedures to figure it out.

If anyone has ever achieved this and can help me out that would be great. Otherwise I'll post my solution so others can at least see this thread.

The only NPCs I see riding horses regularly are the Nobles. I think there are others, but the Nobles are the only ones I have seen get off the horse. I have seen them get off their horses for a battle a couple of times (against fauna, not me) but never get back on them again. I never stuck around long enough to see if they ever did. Poke around in the Nobles scripts and see what they have.

Okay, I managed to crack open the intro (A lot faster than I thought I would...) and Tullius simply has a travel package with "Ride Horse" checked as well. However, his horse was set up a bit differently. I've tweaked my setup to more closely match his, so we'll see what happens.

Thanks CCNA, if Tullius can't help me (Insert civil war joke here), I'll poke around the Nobles setup. :)

Your post made me chuckle... remind me not to leave my horse alone in Falskaar settlements.

Don't worry, nobody will awkwardly walk up against it. I won't allow it! :P

So I tried this new setup, and the changes worked halfway. The horse now just stays put (As it's set up to do when not ridden) which eliminates the odd glitchyness of them both trying to occupy the same space. However my NPC still refuses to mount the horse. He simply walks through the entire scene.

How do I force him to get on the dang horse? Tullius doesn't appear to have any extra stuff set up, he just mounts the horse and rides it around as long as his package says to "Ride Horse if Possible"...

There's also a wilderness encounter with a hunter who rides a horse that dismounts to engage their prey. Probably worth a look since I'm fairly certain they will remount to continue on after the prey is dead.

Does the NPC own the horse?
