Getting out of Jail

Post » Sun Mar 20, 2011 1:56 pm

I personally would like the tutorial to also evolve around us having to get out by ourselves. They area a number of ways of going about it, and then the tutorial tells you what class you should be.

The way I'd get out: If you have a cloak, keep it on 24/7, if you ever get some sort of meat, hide it and let it rot. Once they think you are dead, they'll take you and either things can happen:

a: you get thrown in the river and go to the next town.
b: you run away because the people carrying you were attacked by a dragon.

Classes are gone. You are what you play.

The tutorial is about teaching you how to play the game. It's not the game itself. It has to show you all the controls, and functions of the game. It's a poorly made tutorial if it only shows you some aspects of it. This is what you are asking for if you want to have a tutorial with multiple scripted paths.

There has to be all the basic controls such as moving, managing inventory, etc. There has to be some combat. There has to be some dialogue.

We already know what the beginning is going to be about. You just pick your race and then

This would be pretty cool. But i think the escapes should be more skill oriented.

Stealth: You fashion a Lockpick and escaped via sneak.
Magic: The wise old prisoner in the next cell teaches you a simple Invisibility or unlock spell
Combat: You knock out a guard and steal his weapon.

I meant the tutorial would recommend what you should do.

It would teach you about all of the different stuff you can do on maybe a day when the guards let you go outside in the back area. (like how there was a back area in the Imperial City's jail.)
Then you would plan on escaping after you are taught basic controls.

I'd like it if you had a 'buddy' that escaped with you from prison (kind of like Jiub or something), and he taught you some stuff on the way. Then, when you finally get out, you go your separate ways and venture off into the land. He could end up being a warrior, a mage, a thief, whatever. I like the idea of thief.
What would then be awesome would be, by coincidence, occasionally bumping into him (maybe you're hoarding the same cave, maybe he's drinking at a lowly pub in the city?) and stuff. Perhaps later on he gets himself jailed again for murdering some innocent woman, and you get to decide whether you'll repay the favour that he did to change your life, or let him rot in his cell forever.
Dunno, I'd just like that one character that I have a bit more of a connection with.

This. This is all that's gonna happen. The reason why Oblivion had such a long tutorial was to tailor your play style to the class/race/birthsign you wanted to offer a taste before you wasted 3 hours out in the world and then realized you couldn't change anything. Now that you only choose racial features, you're gonna pretty much go headfirst into the game more akin to Morrowind.

And this is good - I felt Morrowind had too much crap you had to do before starting, and it was pretty minimal in hindsight. The Seyda Neen C&E office did make for a nice tutorial, though - and gave you some loot to sell while starting out. I felt it was about right - just enough for a better sword, some armor, and a trip to Balmora.

I think that it will give you an intro into the standard controls (movement, melee/ranged/spell combat and npc interaction), and leave you to do what you fancy.

No doubt there will be a chunk of lore as well, introducing the character(s).
