Getting Redguard to Work

Post » Wed Oct 20, 2010 1:40 pm

According to an Elder Scrolls wiki somewhere Redguard should be playable in DOSBox, but it isn't. It keeps giving me an "out of memory" error. I checked on the DOSBox forums and it seems DOSBox isn't capable of playing games over a certain memory requirement, which sadly includes Redguard. So how else can it be played? I know of GliDos, but I'd rather not use VDMSound like it says you must. If that's the only way, though, there's not much I can do. I do have a couple older motherboards lying around with a Voodoo card but I currently don't have a case or a hard drive for them yet. So my WinXP PC is my only option.

Anyone else get Redgaurd to work on a modern system?

I haven't yet, but I also haven't yet given up or exhausted all avenues. I just got Daggerfall running a couple months ago, and every time I have time to play, I can't be bothered to work on Reguard.. *heh heh*

Well I tried it with the SVN version of DOSBox that apparently supports Glide. I actually got Redguard working with the regular DOSBox release by setting the memsize to 63 in the config file. But I can't get Glide mode to work in the SVN DOSBox. It gives me this error:

ERROR!(17) Error initializing graphics mode.Source file information available====================================================Occurred in main.cAt line 1053Object manager information====================================================Error code 2Description Manager not open

I'm getting the exact same error. What does it mean by "manager not open"?

Anyone familiar with ImDisk as used to bypass the invisible quest-related spawns glitch on XP? I'm also using Turbo to slow the CPU and VDMSound, my Dagger/Bat file reads:

DOSDRV
imdisk -a -s 50M -p "/fs:fat32 /q /d" -m e:
imdisk -a -s 50M -p "/fs:fat32 /q /d" -m d:
fall.exe z.cfg
imdisk -d -m e:
imdisk -d -m d

While it loads well enough, it doesn't appear to solve the glitch.
Should I mount the Dagger.Bat as ImDisk virtual disk before playing? To a different letter than those specified in the Bat file?

EEEK Help! :brokencomputer:

And don't say DosBox - my system isn't fast enough <_<

(P.S. I own Daggerfall, btw)

Thanks to anyone who can help!

Probably best to detail your processes - have you tried changing the soundcard through VDMSound setup? Did you extract SAPUCDEX.EXE into the Redguard drectory? (assuming you were following this guide: http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=195)

Will it work on Vista 64-bit?

I'd like bump this question. I have XP 64-bit. I have the DOSbox (0.72), and it runs Daggerfall fine. Will I be able to run Redguard? I've already got a big enough headache trying to get Grim Fandango to run on my computer; will Redguard give me that sort of hassle regarding anti-aliasing, 3d acceleration, and direct draw?
