Make potions, and sell them. It's ridiculously easy. Just join the Mages Guild, and grab all the alchemical ingredients from the local headquarters. Steal or buy the basic equipment. The game isn't like Morrowind; you can't fail at making potions by having too low a skill rating. Keep pumping out potions, and sell them to the guilds. Buy more ingredients from alchemists. Meanwhile, your alchemy skill rises, and you get more money.

In fact, it's far, far too easy. There's next to no challenge to it. Unless you use mods to make the roads perilous, and walk the routes.

Alchemy is very effective. Another good way to make some money fast is to join the Arena and raise in rank quickly.

Do Crayfish cave, just Crayfish vents and soggy bottom, open all the chests, sell magical loot, make potions for three days, return to crayfish cave, rinse, repeat.

On low level I recomend alchemy. From level 23 simply raid bandit caves. A trip to Sercen, which only have one rom and about 7 enemies, can get you 15000+ without having more than 15-16 in mercantile.

Technically, the quickest way would be to exploit some bugs, but I think you're looking for legitimate methods, in which case dungeon diving is probably the best way.

Selling potions and poisons gives you loads of money in no time with minimal effort. Go ingredient hunting out in the wilderness and combine that with a bit of dungeon diving if you run into any on the way. Or you can just buy all of the ingredients from a vendor, make them into potions/poisons and sell those right back to the same person.

It's hard not to be rich in this game past level 25 or so...

Every bandit cave is filled with loot that sells in the Imperial City for thousands of gold.
