Getting Started with OOO

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 3:31 pm

Hi gang! I'm new to OOO, and I'm having some difficulties. Got myself a wood elf, assassin class character as I like sneaking around shooting things, but I'm having real difficulty leveling up as everything is tougher than me! I'm dying all the time! I've come across this site: http://devnull.sweetdanger.net/ooospoilers.html but the list of safe dungeons is expired. Can someone either repost the list or point me in the right direction? Thanks!

You can check http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1088301-beginners-tips-for-ooo for just that. I'd advice against getting like a list of dungeons suitable for low level chars, though, as it just seems a bit boring IMO. Sort of like having signs on the dungeon doors saying which levels they are suitable for. Focus on Bandits and Goblins in the beginning. Try to avoid fighting several enemies at once. Also, it's safer closer to civilization - and more challenging the further away you get. Generally...

thanks a bunch! And yeah, it is a bit dull knowing ahead of time, but then so is dying every five minutes! :brokencomputer: Thanks again!

Coming from vanilla, OOO is quite a shock and as it is unforgiving on lower levels, it can be a bit frustrating taken together. Basically, my advice would be to hang in there. Take it slow in the beginning, stay close to roads, check out dungeons but be prepared to back out rather quickly.

I always start out with Vilverin (the Ayleid Ruin close to the sewer exit) - it is doable except for the last boss section. It's a good test for Lvl 1 builds IMO. Also, take advantage of the deadlier traps - lure enemies into them.

Arkngt has the right of it. Although, I don't find any part of Vilverin challenging. But then, that's with the full FCOM experience of it...

Don't hesitate to retreat, or even full-on run away! At very low levels, especially. The areas around the IC are the best place to start, IMO, because that's more or less the behaviour expected by OOO's creator, if I'm not mistaken. :) Another thing is, you can "use" guards - iow, get them to help with a particularly difficult foe. Again, at very low levels.

More than anything though, you learn by trying. And yes, failing is part of that, at first. I consider this a strong point. YMMV.

Spectrals are very hard for most Lvl 1 builds. Not saying they are impossible, but they should almost certainly be quite challenging for all Lvl 1 builds/chars I can think of.

Hm, Actually, I was just level 2, at the time I did the final bit, last time. Could've helped. Oh, and that's right - was really lucky with picking up some awesome items from some random [evil] human on the run (very lucky too, not to die, at level one!). I think that contributed, quite a bit.

So you're probably right, in general. And, I was only level 1 for some of Vilverin.

edit: Summoning and some basic tactics were useful also!

 You should try it without a magic overhaul mod enabled.
Only my opinion, but these, and/or coupled with a companion mod completely alter the way mod plays. :)

Good point! I'd actually forgotten about that too.

Not sure how much LAME really helped, but then again, it could've. More Magicka, possibly...?

Been a while since I played just straight FCOM. Hm...

edit: I don't use companions though! :) (... trying to claw back a teensy bit of cred here - gimme a break! :P)

Companions, summoning and running away work well. If you are ambitious you can try and find a npc with good armor and lure him/her into a trap. You'd also be surprised how much survivability a purse full of gold can buy. Also alteration magic to increase armor early on can be a life saver.

I sometimes just set the difficulty lower, and adjust it up each level... depends on the character and what order I plan to do stuff in.

OOO has provided me with lots of chances to learn the art of grabbing valuable things and running like crazy. Yesterday my little bosmer thief grabbed the stuff from the Chamber of Reflection in Underpall Cave and ran all the way out, past the boss, past the four spectral reavers, past the respawned spectral warriors, through the forest and onto a safe road. It was scary.

Deadly Reflex helps a bit. Sometimes if I get a sneak shot on a tough guy he will collapse in a fountain of blood. Ambushing is fun too., especially if II manage to decapitate a raider in front of his friends. Map Marker Overhaul is also excellent with this. It's easy to mark dungeons I can't open or can't beat.

This is also made a bit more difficult because I have RL installed and my character has no endurance primary skills. My HP goes up very, very slowly. The whole experience is far more interesting an fun. With OOO it's worth your time to burglarize guild halls and just exploring the wilderness is fun and scary. I die a lot.
