Getting in the mood for Skyrim

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 6:05 pm

I'm just wondering what Movies/TV Shows/Books/CD's(?) people would suggest for that nordic feel. I already watched Eric The Viking not long ago and that did an excellent job of bringing out my inner Nord.

And I leave out video games, because I don't want everyone to spam TES series games.

I was certainly considering Beowulf, as I have yet to watch it.

Eaters of the Dead (the book which they made 13th warrior from)
There's also a ton of music you could listen to, especially viking/folk metal.

Go out in the snow and fight/train for a while!

Beowulf, as mentioned. The A Song of Ice and Fire series by GRR Martin; it's much darker fantasy than any game I've played, but has a definite wintry/northern atmosphere much of the time. Maybe the Dragonlance chronicles for dragon-related adventure stuff. The Children of Húrin is great (even has a dragon in it!), just be prepared for a ridiculously tragic ending.

For films, check out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sz-yLWGaIxM, Conan, or maybe http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-P03NGSP6Y.

That's more general fantasy than Nordic, but they at least have northern or sword & sorcery themes.

I looked into A Song of Fire and Ice. Looks like a TV series is gonna debut in April, so I know what I'll be watching once a week, while I wait for Skyrim.

Beowulf is the best way to go, IMO.

Lord of the Rings. It's based off Norse mythology and has a very epic fantasy feel. Also brilliant movies.
