Getting the scratches out of a Disc.

Post » Thu Aug 19, 2010 3:14 am

I left my Oblivion disc in my living room and my dog knocked it off the table and said "Hey, I'm gonna walk all over this [censored]!" So long story short my copy of Oblivion has scratches like I've never seen! Being a twenty-something living alone I can't go out and afford an expensive disc repair so I would prefer a home solution to this. The only thing I've tried so far is glasses cleaner but that only got rid of the much smaller scratches.

Toothpaste

Though if HeyYou was still here, he'd tell you to put it in the toilet and flush it once or twice

I paid for disc repair, it was all of £3.

Toothpaste

I hear this all the time but I tried it on a scratched blank CD and it ruined the top part of the disc (running it under the tap) it also didn't remove any scratches, it just smelled nice.

The last game i got fixed up was final fantasy 8.

It cost me 8 quid for 4 discs, so 2 quid each.

It's not as expensive as you may think.

I was going to say toothpaste but seems Defron beat me to it. Try it and see what happens.

Then disc repairs would be roughly $5 Canadian then? Hmmm I'd still prefer something that doesn't require me to stop being lazy and leave my comfy house at this ungodly hour.

Anyway I could do that without damaging the top of the disc?

Does the top of the disc not go directly to the important part that shouldn't be damaged?

Well I suppose I have nothing to lose so I guess it's worth a shot, I will post the results when I'm finished.

makes sure the water is very hot to the touch and you let it pour on the bottom of the disc for a min or 2

Toothpaste seems to work excellently for my scratched disks.

I used a combo of both toothpaste and boiling water, it had no visible difference, but I've yet to try it in my computer.

EDIT: I used it in the computer, it still doesn't read.

I know that now, but I was hoping to use it as a last resort.

Toothpaste has worked for me a few times but its also wrecked a few games.

Did you try surgically filling each scratch in with tiny granules of sand?

Wiping it with your shirt. Won't remove the scratch but it still works for me.

I hear that putting toothpaste on discs should fix it but I don't know the logic behind it.
