GFWL or Steam?

Post » Thu Jan 13, 2011 8:19 am

Yes, I can see the little logo at the bottom of the screen saying "Games for Windows Live". However, what I'm wondering is, will there be a Steam release of the product as well? Bulletstorm, for example, released a steam-version and a normal version that came with GFWL.

I certainly hope so, because I won't be buying anything for Games For Windows Live. If it turns out I can't get a PC version that isn't GFWL, I'll get it on PS3 if I have to.

EDIT: I never noticed that before now, but it is just Games for Windows...

I made this mistake awhile ago too. Its just "Games for Windows" not "Games for Windows Live". There is a big difference between the two. I for one am pretty sure there will be a steam release, its illogical not to have one.

Bottom of this forum says "Games for Windows" but if you look at F3 that did use Live, it says GFWL. NV says the same thing this forum does. I think we'll get steam again like with NV.

Ahh, right, true. Guess I assumed that since FO3 was GFWL I assumed it would be the same. Personally though I'm hoping for a Steam release, got most of my other games there and it would just be convenient if it was as well :)

GFWL only. I hate Steam. I don't see the problems people have with GFWL, I never had any trouble with it. It doesn't even change anything?

FO3 was on steam and it had GFWL on it as well. All gfwl does is make sure the game uses certain standards like widescreen and 360 controller support, and make Microsoft a bit extra $$$. Bethesda already sells their games on steam so not releasing Skyrim on steam wouldn't make much sense. Honestly I'm all for both. Been using steam since 04 and gfwl introduces some standards that many pc games still don't meet.

If you go to the Fallout NV section it saws GFW as well. Plus a dev mentioned it would be on steam the same way NV was. So if that sticks until release, it will be.

There is a difference between "Games for Windows" (Which is displayed at the bottom of your screen) and 'Games for Windows -Live". "Games for Windows" is branding by Microsoft which certifies that the game meets certain requirements such as 64 bit compatibility (Though the game itself can be 32 bit), compatibility with the Games Explorer, an "Easy Install Option", and a few other things. 'Games for Windows -Live" is a optional service for games that are certified with "Games for Windows" all Live does is provide a DLC and updating service, friends, messages, achievements, ect.

I have not heard anything about Skyrim having GFWL needed. Just because a game is GFW doesn't mean it wont be released on Steam (Civ for example).

Thanks for clearing that up, man. I don't mind admitting my ignorance concerning the two, I thought that GFW and GFWL were one in the same for the longest time. :P

GFWL sounds good to me. Im tired of having to search online for why my steam is messing up, and then having to download so much nonsense in order to find out.

Steam please. GFWL is the worst online distribution service I have ever used, Steam the best. When they cross it makes me want to tear my face off.

GFWL never felt like working for me. It felt like I had to sign in a million times on Fallout to use my saves.

Don't worry, http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1149651-skrim-preorders/page__view__findpost__p__16814197 awhile ago too. I personally hope that GFWL is depreciated since I have no intention of letting that bloated, sorry excuse for content delivery onto my computer again.

I've been forced to deal with GFWL for GTA 4 and Bulletstorm, and those weren't pleasant experiences.

Bulletstorm. I start the game. Before I can reach the main menu, it tells me that I must register/log in to GFWL. Then, it says that I must update GFWL before I can log in properly. Then it says I need to exit the game for the GFWL update to complete. But I couldn't exit the game, because the GFWL log-in requirement blocked access to the freaking main menu. I had to ctrl+alt+del to exit Bulletstorm and let the GFWL update finish. That's just bad design.

The only thing GFWL is doing for me is increasing the time wasted on installing and starting the game.

If I get Skyrim it'll be from Steam. It would be insane for Bethesda not to offer their new hot game on the largest gaming digital distribution network for the PC.

A few games on Steam use GFWL as well. They can mix them, and that's most likely what will happen.

All though GFWL can be a right pain with online games, seeing as skyrim is offline only (Apart from DLC I guess, but we have mods anyway) so we have nothing to worry about. I dont mind steam as long as its not forced. Im a loyal customer to steam so I probably would like a steam feature, but as I said, not forced, like mafia 2.

Double negative much?

I would gladly take GFWL over steam. Never had any problem with GFWL, its non-intrusive and low system resource usage. Steam on the other hand feels it necessary to use up over 70MB of memory ideling, and I don't even use 90% of its "features".

Steam has its benefits, "Big Brother" is not one of them. I'm all for a steam release, as long as I don't get forced to use it.

I'm sure they will, the question is whether it'll be forced, like it was with Fallout:New Vegas. :sadvaultboy:

Simple disk check, please. Online stuff for offline games is silly.

GFWL: very unlikely IMHO

Steam: a good option for those who want & are able to use it.
Steamworks: Steam without allowing other options (no matter what method of distribution Steam is required) <--- The one I hope Bethesda won't use.

This.

GFWL never even made me sign up for an account, much less actually log on, to play Fallout 3. It just sat there.
