GHF's Morrowind Birthday Bash -- Modding Tourney

Post » Wed May 02, 2012 11:10 pm

You know what could be a cool prize? The fulfillment of a single non-grandiose modders resource request! As someone who has failed hard at modeling and texturing, that'd be pretty perfect. Impractical though I suppose...

Anyway, great idea here. I think I'll be submitting my Imperial Knights Mod when the time comes around.

I was so hoping that GHF would do this again - am confused though by the limitation

Maid in Morrowind will be ready for beta release soon - and I would like to enter that for the companion, clothing, scripting, quests/dialogue categories as this will be my current pinacle of achieving all those things

Are you saying the mod can't be illegible for judging if it is released before the deadline?

Yes, this means that mods that have already been released are not eligible. One of the purposes of the tournament is to showcase new mods and their release will help promote the tournament.

What about "gameplay balance" as a category?
They already said that currently released doesnt count, so that mod doesnt count, otherwise I would enter my wayshrine.

We'd prefer new mods (and modders if they're so inclined), so those mods that have already been released would be ineligible because they could taint the judges' decisions. In the last contest, none of the judges knew who released what, we were only told what the mod was and what it was supposed to do. We didn't find out who submitted what until after the judging was over. We can't do that with a mod that has already been released.

I'm not going to disagree with you since it's your competition - I'm just still confused that if you are looking to judge a mod that you don't know anything about then that modder can't have had a WIP thread going on

Modding to me is one part working on it by myself, one part pushing myself to learn new techniques and hence going to the construction forum for help from more experienced modders, and one part running a WIP thread for feedback or generating some interest. Most of the forum goers either here or on any of the other modding sites normally keep a WIP thread going it's like a sanity blog to show that all the effort you are spending your time has actually got something to show for it.

A category like a quest mod can represent 6 months work or even years versus releasing a texture for clothing or a face which might be done in an hour or less, but it sounds like you are looking for mods to be entered that are created between the date of submission and the deadline not ones that have been in progress for a while?

Or am I just completely missing the point again - which I often do so please forgive me in advance

We just don't want an already released mod, so the judges don't know who the author is until after the judging. That way it doesn't lead to them judging the mod unfairly.

The upshot of it is, if you don't feel you can complete a mod by the time the tournament deadline comes up, don't enter it. Choose another mod, another mod category, or wait for the next tournament. It's not that complicated, really. The judges haven't been picked, we've had no entries yet, it's two months away, and it's for fun and prizes. Please don't make this out to be some gladiatorial life or death competition.

Ahhh, I think I misread the OP...thought it said "you can enter WIPS" not "you can enter current WIPS." College classes kill my ability to have this mod completely finished by the deadline. Thanks for clearing that up.

Those of us still modding Morrowind are all pretty low maintenance now

It's for the love of the game and of challenging yourself rather than huge kudos - though that said in the past 2 years I've seen some breathtaking mods - MGE XE, MCP, MOLEX, Vurt's landscaping all come to mind as reinvigorating my personal game - and I'm still downloading and adding mods

However I do think modders have a certain competitive spirit and competitions do bring our ego's to the fore

I've always enjoyed seeing how Flig supports the community and stirs up interest in modding - I hope he is going to release something this time round as well

A little gladiatorial sparring would add some spice - in the end though it would be just cool to see a bunch more mods released

And while you want the judges to be neutral and not know who submitted what - some of us have pretty distinctive art styles that are easy to pick - everytime I walked into one of Korana's homes I knew exactly who had made that, if I play with one of Emma's or Westly's faces - yep I know their style, ditto phijama's weapons, ditto AS and Plangkye's clothes.

That said it is a good opportunity for some of us to tidy up our hard-drives and let go of some things that might have been made for projects that never quite made it.

I'm always impressed with the effort GHF puts in to supporting modders and modding - I must come by and lurk again sometime

edit: wish I'd stop spelling 'my' as 'by'

I missed that part.

That being said, it saddens me that gameplay is a largely ignored aspect of modern game development, as the chosen categories of this tournament are a good indication of.

Anyone can enter at any time. Just pop over to GHF and say you want to. No contracts! No entrance fees! As for gameplay, BTB, we aren't limited to the categories mentioned, they are still flexible. There isn't yet a category for race mods either, but if someone decides to enter one, the category can be made.

BTW, GHF staff members are not eligible to be judges, nor can we win the grand prize, however, several of us may release mods for judging in the tournament, under the same rules as everyone else. So, those who are looking forward to an entry from Fligg, might just get one. :D

The deadline looms...just about two weeks left. Got your entry ready?

We're getting excited for other upcoming aspects of the Morrowind's birthday celebration. For example, did you know we're also giving away a copy of the GOTY edition? Spread the word....everyone must experience Morrowind!!!!!!

Okay, I've finally got the submission form ready! You can send us your mods here: http://fliggerty.com/phpBB3/tourney.php

Oh, and we've decided to push back the deadline by one week. It is now Monday April 23rd....so that gives us two weeks from today!

Why do you think it would lose in the animation category? Is Antares participating? Because if he is, I guess I could understand your thinking.

It's too bad Morrowind didn't come in 2003, because then I might have a shot at submitting Sunfall for this. Which would mean I would CRUSH ALL OF YOU!! MUAHAHAHAHA!!

But with a deadline of about two weeks from now, I think the the best I could manage at this point is the Ruins of Vivec City sampler. And that's if I REALLY bust my ass, which I don't feel like doing.
