GHF Presents: Census and Excise Office

Great House Fliggerty Census and Excise Office

The General Idea

Imagine a website where you can view detailed stats about someone's Morrowind character, complete with a screenshot gallery. Now imagine that this website updates while you are playing. That's the general idea.

Keep in mind that much of this is a WIP. Most of the intended initial features are functioning. Really we are just in bug-hunting mode right now. We have made some great strides lately, with many thanks to Peachykeen, and all of those who have done a great deal of testing for me!

The Process

So you go to the GHF Census and Excise Office website and register for a new character. You are given a character ID, then you go play Morrowind. The mod setup process will ask you for this character ID, which it will use (obviously) to reference your character's stats online. In the game you will be given a book, "Census Logs," that you use to update certain bits of info about your character. You can set things like your current activity, current mood, etc. When you wish to upload your data to the CnE web site, all you do is save your game and then choose the upload option in the book.

Besides general character information, some of the things that will be uploaded (assuming I can get all of the scripts to harvest the data correctly, this IS still a WIP) are:

  • Current Activity (from user input)
  • Current mood (from user input)
  • Current location
  • Cell name (coords if in "Wilderness")
  • Current weather
  • Is a vampire (and what clan)
  • Is a werewolf
  • # of kills as a werewolf
  • Current companions
  • Currently equipped items
  • Amount of gold in inventory
  • If Fargoth has been killed
  • # of cliffracers killed
  • # of arrows shot
  • # of times a weapon has been "swished"
  • # of hits on targets
  • # of NPCs killed
  • # of creatures killed
  • # of times the console has been opened
  • #of spell cast attempts (for each school)
  • #of spell cast failures (for each school)
  • #of spell cast successes (for each school)

There will also be awards, or "badges" for certain acheivments in the game:

  • Levels: 10, 25, 50, 75, 100, 150, 200
  • Opponents Killed: 10, 25, 50, 75, 100, 150, 200, 250, 500, 1000
  • Creatures Killed: 10, 25, 50, 75, 100, 150, 200, 250, 500, 1000
  • Slaves Freed: 10, 25, 50, 75, 100
  • Reputation: 25, 50, 75, 100, 125, 150
  • Complete Morrowind Main Quest
  • Complete Tribunal Main Quest
  • Complete Bloodmoon Main Quest
  • Leader of Each Vanilla Faction (1 Badge Each)
  • Millionaire
  • Gave Fargoth's Ring Back
  • Killed Vivec
  • Nerevarine

And many more!
Current Status

We are currently undergoing the BETA test. This has been a very informative period of time, a lot of subtle problems have been found and fixed. And we are working on squishing some major bugs. I do not want to give any dates here that we can't keep, but the public unveiling is getting very close!

I want to give a hearty THANK YOU to all of those who have helped test things already! :goodjob:

I still would appreciate more testing, I would like it to continue as progress continues. If you want to join in the testing, you just need to look to Twitter. I have provided links to my "tweeps." ;)

Here's something of a progress list:
  • Repairing possible CTD while in combat.
  • Characters with certain symbols in name are not uploading.
  • Working on moderation functions for the site.

Previous thread:

I want to make a huge THANK YOU to everyone who has been testing, this couldn't have happened at all without the patience and information provided by all of you!

hurray....we are getting close to having a new feature in MW...Global Rankign systems of sorts...or if that's too much, a public showcase for our characters. lol a thought just occurred to me flig, by allowing everyone to see everyone elses modlists, we can essentially find the common mods that can be considered a standard of sorts int heir respective categories. no more tying to guess what everyone considers to be essential when you can see what everyone is using...so maybe no more people constantly asking for what essential mods we need, they ask and we could point them to the CnE and have them look at modlists :P just a ramble or two from a guy who doesn't play much...

Yes, that is absolutely true. And when people need to post their mod list, they can just easily copy+paste from CnE. It does make me thing that I ought to make a stats page that shows what mods are in use, and how many characters are using each one. However, due to the way the mod lists are stored, it will really take a lot of html parsing. So it's not something I will make right away, but I do like the thought.

sounds like an idea, but if it is going to take a while to do that, then perhaps it's just better to pass on that feature and work on the current problems and any that could possibly arise until you feel that it is time to put something like that to use. but at the same time a realization sets in that even though we are coming out with new and great mods and utils, the number of people actually playing this game is dwindling down each passing month. At some point you have to wonder how many people will actually be playing the game for the sake of having fun and not for the point of enhancing it. what's the point of enhancing an old game if there is no one to play it? meh im digressing but I still can't wait for this to be finished, I know for a fact that once the PR is out I will definitely be playign again to try it out. How hard would it be to create a ranking system of sorts, like say hold different rankings for highest level, most quests completed, and monsters/NPCs killed? would that take more time to do than the global modlist?

Which two of your three characters is this happening with? And what data is getting crossed? All of it, or just some specific things?

I forgot about the Argonian char >.>

It's Talia and Rhiana. I updated Talia and she got the data from Rhiana. I'll check what crossed over now.

* Health, Magicka, Fatigue.
* Reputation and Bounty info
* Mood and Activity is the same, but I don't know if they weren't before
* Inventory (all items)
* Current Magic Effects
* Factions and Badges
* Almanac
* Misc Info

So... pretty much everything aside from skills and attributes.

Also, I'm not seeing any Upload link on the main page... ?

Hmm, okay, I'll take a look at it. Thanks.

The upload link has been removed from the main page. It is now available in the character's drop-down menu. It seemed like a more logical place to put it.

Ah, I somehow missed the notice :D

Should I re-upload my save? Or leave it as it is for a while, for you to check things?

Go ahead and reupload. I'm curious to see if it will do it correctly this time.

Uploaded the exact same save (haven't opened Morrowind since I last updated), and the data went up just fine. Also, my lower-level char has a higher rep than my pretty-much-godlike char... wtf? x.x

So are the reputations for both correct? Or were you just commenting on the oddity of your character's actual reputation in the game?

I have no idea why the characters may be getting crossed when uploading. I am hoping that the next version of the uploader will fix that. We are revamping quite a bit of the data storage method, which should be far simpler and more reliable.

I've made a full leader board. So now instead of just seeing the top 5 characters in regards to points earned, you can see how everyone stacks up. The link to it is the "Leader Board" header. I am open to suggestions for improving it.

Yeah, the rep looks right. It's just strange, although it makes sense, since I didn't do many quests on Rhiana, while I did all the Imperial Cult on Talia.

Hmm... why make the Leader Board like that? You can simply add the option to sort by points in the character list.

And on the sidebar, keep the first 5 by points, but perhaps, once it's more popular, make it first 5 by points that were updated in the last month, to keep attention to active characters.

I wanted to keep the leader board separate from the character list. Notice that the points are not listed on the character display page. I don't want the leader board and points to be an integral part of the whole thing, I want people to be able to ignore the whole point aspect altogether if they so choose.

I've made some changes to the posting script. To properly test it, I would like it if everyone who is able would upload their character again. Thanks! :hehe:

I decided to fiddle around with some PHP string parsing functions that I've recently learned about. I've just about got a script together that will parse out and count all of the mods from the modlists. The problem is that it won't show mods for any characters that were uploaded before now. But as they get re-uploaded, it will update. I'll get a page together that displays the mods.

Ok, mods stats are available now. At the bottom of the Census Records box the total number of mods in use for all characters in the database is listed. There is a link to page that will show all of those mods and how many characters are using each one. This will let us get a really good picture of what mods are commonly used. I'm excited to be able to gather this type of information! :goodjob:

Nice :)

Could you add the option to see how many of each race (including how many custom races, perhaps?) are used in the Census page or an off-shoot page, perhaps? It's interesting to know that 10 races are used, for example, but if I'm curious as to how many Khajiit, Dunmer, Nords, etc. there are... it would be nice to see that!

The modlist looks nice indeed.

I updated (tried to) Rhiana this morning, since I had a few free minutes. For some reason, my Argonian got all the data. And I mean all of it, except the images. They use three different IDs.

Can all these problems be caused by the fact that I disable and enable the CNE.esp, but I don't go through the "setting this thing up" dialogue after enabling it just to update? It's worked fine most of the time, but since problems keep popping up, maybe that messes something up.

Yes. I intend to make a more detailed statistics page at some point. It isn't really a priority though. It is something I will make after we released this and have a much larger database.

malko, that is highly likely. The id variable that is used to track the characters is probably getting messed up somewhere. That is really the only thing that could explain it at this point. You are the only person who has reported this problem, and you are the only person as far as I know who has been doing that.

Well, I am also the only one who updates multiple characters :) Once I'm home and if my new Win7 install goes smoothly, I'll go through the setup process with each char and re-update them, and we'll see if that fixes things.

Okay, went through the setup process... Rhiana went up properly from the first try. Talia took two uploads (first upload gave her the data from Rhiana) and the Argonian gives me the "extended data didn't upload properly" error. But at least it's no longer the data from another char.

There's a hole in the case? Just replace it ;)

Anyway, I was on the website just now, and I noticed that the full profile pictures are bigger. Double, at least. Is there a particular reason for this? It stretches the page so that the right colum (Leader Board, etc) can't be seen at 1280x1024 resolution. It's probably fine on a widescreen monitor... but the profile was fine before. Right now the image takes up a lot of space and attention on a page that should be about the attributes and skills :)

The hole apeared from heat and im worried about what the heat might have done to other parts in the system. I find it strange that just the box had a hole in it. Some of my memory may have been lost and i may have to replace the computer depending on how bad the damage is.

I can't download morrowind on the computer im using now because its a freinds 30-year-old laptop and it already had fallout on it. However im still looking through the site itself.
