Ghost in dead money ?

Post » Sat Oct 24, 2009 6:19 pm

Ghouls aren't even possible, either. Fallout uses lots of Science! But not much actual Science.

But yes, this is science-fiction.

Sci Fi is something the is scientifically plausible . Ghouls yes Pixy dust and Ghost no

Sci Fi stands for Science Fiction. Fiction = Not Plausible. Your opinion of fantasy games is your own, not everyone (certainly not on this forum) agrees with you.

Dude, Sci-fi is Science Fiction, that doesn't mean it's possible.

Aliens are not Sci-fi, they are some stupid idea some drunk made up after hallucenating.

I really don't have an opinion on the existence of aliens. Let's say I'll believe it when I see it. Otherwise, aliens go into fantasy in my books.

Ok perhaps we can agree power armor and plasma rifles do not belong in elder scrolls and magic pixy dust and ghost do not belong in FONV ?

Because one half of FO3 was ripped off from FO1/2, and the other half is fantasty left-overs from oblivion.

You did say that the rest was left-overs from Oblivion. No fireballs in FO3.

I'm not to sort of person to get offended at stuff, but if I was going to get offended I'd be more offended at the bad science in Fallout than the magic in Elder Scrolls.
Happily, Fallout doesn't pretend to be scientific, so it's okay. It's just a fantasy using science tropes.

I don't play elder scrolls know why , because I don't believe in magic or ghost or any of that crap .

Neither do i, but i still have no problem playing Oblivion with a fireball throwing cat-human :hehe:

Besides, Fallout's SCIENCE! (=equals unproven hypotheses and just plain misinformation) is pretty close to magic ;)

What he's saying is that Bethesda basically developed Fallout 3 like Oblivion and put ghosts in for the sake of cool. Ghosts don't really fit in the Fallout universe.

Now, Fallout 2 had a ghost, but that was Fallout 2 trying to be funny, and it failed. I think that ghost isn't really considered canon, as it's one of the hundreds of pop-culture references (there was a TON).

Who is to say "Ghost" does fit Fallout? Ghost is a really board word, and in a lot of Sci-Fi settings Ghost is being introduce as something behave like Ghost (like Ghost people) or have physical attribute of Ghost (like Holograms).

Of course, FO3 Dunwich and the "Evil tome" is something belong to Fantasy like Oblivion.

That's just a Lovecraft easter egg, there was a whole village as one in Oblivion :D

Speaking of Ghost People, with their gasmasks and jumping around they remind me of http://soc.stalker-game.com/?page=snork from S.T.A.L.K.E.R. a bit.

The ghost quest in Fallout 2 is no less canon than any other side quest in the game. The non canon elements of Fallout 2 are the random special encounters such as the crashed Star Trek shuttle and the Cafe of Broken Dreams. In addition the Dunwich Building and the Forlorn Hope Graveyard are canon places in Fallout 3 and New Vegas respectively which feature paranormal activity. Ghosts are very much present in Fallout, like it or not.

See, Lovecraft isn't exactly famous for Sci-Fi horror. While contemporary fantasy may have some Sci-Fi element (or vice-versa), Fallout just isn't one of them. The whole Dunwich business would have been a lot more "Fallout" if Bethesda crafted it so, like a pre-war artist sculpted that statue out of radioactive marble, then subsequently turn into a Ghoul and wrote the tome which people confuse with reanimation.

Although I felt there could have been more background about the Ghost people, Chris obviously left it out to keep them all more mysterious to increase the fear factor.

I agree with that. But that's why i have no issues retuning the tome to the old man, as such things do not exist in Fallout :hehe:

I think even Chris Avellone said at one point to not take it seriously, it's a pop-culture reference.

I don't recall him ever saying that; regardless I don't think it really matters at this point since both Fallout 3 and New Vegas also have haunted locations. As long as ghosts are not used in any major capacity I don't see a problem with them in Fallout.

I liked the way they did the hologram ghosts in the casino - Vera Keyes walking around calling out to Sinclair. That was genuinely creepy, until I found the emitters. The whole holo-police thing with them shooting lazers out of their heads really had a Dr. Who vibe.

No ... I don't play elder scrolls because I think magic and spells and ghost are silly non scientific hog wash like faeries and pixy dust and peter pan and Santa and any religion you wanna lump in with the unscientific voodoo Fallout is plausible at least in some scientific form . A spell to make a hobbit 30 ft tall is not .

So these dust storm that Julia go through in Morrowind are Pixy Dust Storms. How annoying it hurt her eyes so much that she covers her eyes so that 'pixy' dust will not get into her eyes.
