[REQ] Ghostgate fence energy barrier modification

Post » Tue May 08, 2012 4:27 am

Hi all,

Looking for someone who can extend the length of the ghostgate fence barrier. In my Mountainous Red Mountain mod I've had to raise the height of the fence, and as a result, in a few places, the barrier is too short.

meshes are x\ex_gg_fence_s_01, 02, 03 and 04.

Don't forget too that these use animated textures, so dunno if that will cause a problem?

I tried doing that too, but the animated part prevented my Blender work from working ingame. There must be some trick to it, but I've yet to figure it out....

Blender handles UVControllers just fine. How much taller do you need them?

Perhaps you could increase the scale of the barriers in the construction set?

Increasing the scale would be bad for two reasons;

1. The ghostgate animation would be stretched bigger on the scaled up parts of the fence which would look ugly
2. The pieces would no longer fit perfectly between the pylons

That looks perfect. Could you also do meshes 2, 3 and 4? Big thanks in advance.

Hmm, just thought, I might hide some "easter eggs" dedicated to all the members here who helped me with my mod (as well as being mentioned in credits!)

erm, sorry chainy, not quite right. Looks like you've stretched the entire model instead of extending the length. So, as a result, the mesh no longer fits the curve of the fence tops.

That's why I posted the first one, so that you could tell me if it was what you wanted before I wasted my time on the other three as you weren't very specific. You said that they are too short, so I doubled the height, the size of the mesh on any axis other than z hasnt been altered. Are you sure that you havent scaled them in the CS? Now you say that you want the length changing. As the breadth and width are both originally shorter than the height, I don't know which other parameter you could be referring to.

OK, so I see in game that the ghostgate has a frame around the top. If you want me to alter the height of the fence without editing the curve at the top, there will be ugly uv stretches, If you want me to change the UVs too, that might cause incompatibility with any texture replacers. The third option is the edit the frame mesh to match the curve. Which do you prefer?

Sorry, I checked the first mesh with NifSkope, and I could see it was longer, but I didn't notice the curve until I replaced them today in game.

are you sure about the UV? I'm no expert with modelling, but it seems the texture is just repeated across the model without any specific UV mapping.
The 4 curves need to stay the same please, just extending across the bottom.

Another option, which might not be feasable due to the animated texture, is a square mesh that I can place in the gaps. If the animation cycle is the same, then it won't be noticable, and will be 1 mesh, instead of 4.

I'll probably just extend the bottom then, but I'll have to do it after work now.

Would you mind testing in game too? Make sure I didn't accidentally mess anything up... then I'll do the other 3. :)

In game it fits perfectly, just one very minor (to me) oddity. The animated texture moves up for a few secs, slows down, stops for about half a sec, then resumes again, and cycles through.

It doesn't bother me, but it might bother other people. I'd say go ahead with the other 3 meshes.

Ok, I'll do the other three. I've come across the issue before with animations that are supposed to cycle seamlessly but it doesn't seem to be consistent, even if I animate another mesh in the same way.

I'll see what I can do anyway.

Also, is it just me or do the two 'walls' that each ghostgate mesh is made up of cycle at the same speed? The mesh seems to indicate that one wall should cycle slower than the other. If I change the speed of one wall, it does produce a much nicer effect.

Check this out: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/43101765/Ex_GG_fence_s_01_test.nif

In addition, if you use a different texture for each 'wall', you should be able to create something much more aesthetically pleasing.

Can you tell me if this mesh fixes the hiccup you were experiencing?

Well now, this is odd. the fix_attempt mesh doesn't animate the texture at all in game, but it does in NifSkope :brokencomputer:

Also, I checked the vanilla meshes, and the two surfaces do animate at different speeds (both in NifSkope and in game)

OK, fixed the fix attempt, minor oversight on my part :P Test again?

Only one of the two textures has the pause on it now, but it's fine to me. If you've got an OCD about making it exactly the same as vanilla, go ahead and try, otherwise, I'm happy with it, and will need the other 3 :D

 I only applied the fix to one of the 'textures', that's why. I don't have OCD about making it vanilla, just about quashing any bugs :P

If this doesn't work, I'm out of ideas. Then I'll just go ahead and do the other three.
