Giant Radscorpion invades Goodsprings! News at 11

So, I had some false starts with the game. I'd play a bit and find a new mod or want to adjust an existing mod and end up starting over. No biggie. Anyway, yesterday, I upgraded my vid card and decided to start again. Half way thru the Sunny tutorial after getting the brock flower from the boneyard... WOMP! giant rad scorpion in the middle of goodsprings. Since I kinda a like doing the no reloads thing I started a fresh game and again WOMP! giant rad scorpion right in the middle of town! I thought, "that's weird." I've seen the occasional rad scorpion in town before on the previous starts... but a Giant Rad scorpion!?!?! Twice in a row!?!? Hmmmm... Lets load up again and see what happens. Guess what, WOMP! giant rad scorpion three games in a row right in the middle of town. Long story short, I'm seeing a giant rad scorpion every time, happens around the time I go for the brock flower at the cemetery. Near as I can tell I get, consistently, on the walk from Goodsprings Source to the cemetery the following spawns. One powder ganger and one young gecko hunter just outside town, and one giant rad scorpion in town. Also, there are signs that a pair of coyotes and two or three small rad scorpions are also spawning in with them every time. Just to see how bad it is, I've started a dozen games with the same WOMP! giant radscorpion in the center of town.

Difficulty is set to normal and hardcoe mode is on. Really, a giant rad scorpion at level one? During a tutorial? Chet had a total of 5 units of AP ammo so I had to rely on crits to wear the thing down. A little metagaming cheese has me climbing a rock in the middle of town and taking pot shots until it's weak enough to kite over to Victor for the kill. This almost makes the game unplayable. I hate meta-gaming and cheese solutions, and a Giant Radscorpion is close to invincible for a level one player. Gee, why not a death claw while were at it.

So am I crazy? Or the victim of an unusual set of coincidences? Really is going on here?

I've had that happen once, it was killed by Divine Intervention ("kill", "disable" :hehe:) but that's unbelievable. You're not using IWS are you?

No IWS. But I do think I messed something up with a mod somewhere. I made some minor edits to a Goodsprings shack mod and a sorter mod. Maybe one of those is the culprit.

If nothing else, I'm pretty good at taking on the buggers. Hit the stinger and claws to blunt its attacks and get the legs to slow it down -- just make sure you're on high ground so you can use VATS to target selectively. I'm not sure if its my imagination or not, but the Giant Radscorpions tail seems to be a bit more vulnerable from the rear. Also, several shots in quick succession seem to do more damage per bullet than widely spaced pot shots.

It sounds like a bug (ha!), IIRC scorpions and other creatures can start spawning in the wrong location and once they start, they don't stop. I'd restart the game.

Hahahaha I'm really sorry my friend, but I just couldn't help laughing when I read this!

And I really can't remember anything like that happening to me right in the middle of town, but I remember you saying that you like to get new mods every once in a while for the game. Maybe one of them messed with the game and now it's just like a default?

Yeah, I removed all mods and went back to my vanilla install backup. I tested and the Giant Rad Scorpie was finally gone. I'm in the middle of re-installing the mods. Hopefully, he doesn't come back, or if he does, the effect is only in Goodsprings. I'd hate to pwned by super spawns all thru the game. Wish me luck.

I remember vividly this happened to me in my very first playthrough - I used poor Easy Pete as a human shield. He died fast, but it gave me time to pump enough bullets into it to kill it.

The difficulty of the encounter was actually exhilarating, it's one of the very few moments in the game that has ever really tested my ability to stay alive.

they can spawn on that road that heads by the watertower, and can sometimes follow or chase after an NPC on the edge of town, then keep moveing into town after other NPCs and critters

I think I've had that problem (360 player here). In my case, the damn things tend to appear on the other side of the cemetery hill. So now I go up the road, kill the barkscorpion that inevitably appears, enter the cemetery, keep low and sneak around the graves to rob them and get the flower, use my pistol to get rid of the bloatflies and sneak out. Man, I didn't know it was possible to hate those armorplated bastards more than I did in FO3 but I do. It is fun to lure them into groups of bad guys though. At the very least it slows the scorpion down, at best the hapless decoys can wound it badly enough for me to finish it off after everyone else is dead.
