Giant Spiders

I′m not a big fan of arachnids myself, but that is the fun of it.

I hate spiders with a burning passion... so there's nothing more sweet than being able to stab them to death numerous times on a game.

I'm just going to have to keep my feet off the floor every time I'm fighting one, 'cause I'll think "What if one's crawling up my leg right now...?"

Yes, Arachnophobia is a great survival technique IRL, since some spiders are poisonous, but there's no reason to fear them in a game and you can help disconnect yourself from a fear of seeing spiders by forcing yourself to experience it.

I've found that after enough games with giant spiders I simply feel uncomfortable when fighting them in-game, and can tolerate them more IRL. Everybody win!

...

Except if they crawl slowly and can go on walls/ceilings and then jump out/down at/on you when you least expect it. Then I'm having 10,000 followers.

Giant spiders and heights... the most thrilling game experience ever. :woot:

I hope they can crawl in the ceilings and on the walls, like in Dark Messiah. :D

Giant spiders are a bit of a stock enemy but if done right they are always welcome in my game.

I really hope they do do that. Keep a change of underpants handy!

I am arachnophobic too, so I hope they won't be too scary.

I didn't have a problem with daedra spiders, they are almost comical and don't look like spiders. It also was okay in the Elsweyr mod for Oblivion that also added tarantulae, they scared me more than other enemies, but I could handle it.

I haven't seen the picture from Skyrim yet, so I hope they aren't too scary.

But even then I'd try to not take them out (that feels like a sin, the more different monsters the better), maybe it'd even help me against my fear.

They're not that bad, I mean the ones in Dark Messiah were a lot worse then, they just looked more real.
They aren't tarantulas either, tarantulas are fatter and hairier. Would have been fun if they had been funnel-web spiders, those are some ugly mofos.

I was so happy playing Morrowind and Oblivion, two RPGs who didn't have giant spiders. Many RPGs have them, and sadly I have arachnophobia. I was having loads of fun with Dark MEssiah, until chapter 5, where all the giant spiders were crawling from the big tunnel, and unfortunately, I couldn't play any longer. I was wondering if I am the only one who has this? I mean, giant spiders aren't a necessity...

I have arachnophobia as well, however I'm lucky enough that spiders in video games don't bother me. Hopefully for you, the giant spiders won't be too common, or you're a pc player and can get them modded out. It would really be unfortunate if you couldn't enjoy this game due to your fear of spiders.

I don't like spiders all that much in real life and the ones in games can be very creepy. I found the creepiest spiders were in Thief. HeXen II had spiders that jumped at you and I hated that but I played it just the same. Spiders in Daikatana were pretty creepy and same with the ones in Dark Messiah. Arx Fatalis had some jumbo, weird looking, bloated spiders too. One thing I really don't like is some little spider in a game that is jumping about that is hard to hit... that can be frustrating. Despite not liking spiders, even in games, I still play if the game has them. It does svck tho for people who are really scared of spiders so much they don't want to play a game. Hopefully somebody will mod out any spiders in Skyrim for the players who really don't want them there. Maybe the giant spider is just a boss or something and you can avoid it totally...

In games I don't mind spiders that much. But every time I see a spider I always imagine their faces.. omg THE FACES! I remember always closing my eyes when watching the part in LotR 3 where Sam was actually touching Shelob's mandibles.. Urgh.. *shudder*

For me the more spiders the better! The spiders in Dark Messiah were much more annoying than creepy. I hope there will be some parts more creepy like the forest in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, with those zillions of spiderlings chasing you and the only option is the get the hell out of there :bolt:
But I hope it won't trouble too much you people that fear them

I have the same problem. Hopefully they will be mostly in one or two areas with a few quests related that I can easily ignore.

Lol I'm glad I'm not the only one! It's probably the only time I'll hope the graphics aren't up to scratch - I can't look at photos or videos of spiders, but animations are usually ok. A bit of advice for IRL: get a cat. Mine eats spiders :)

Unfortunately, my cat doesn't. I may muddle through the spiders, but I'm not looking forward to them. It isn't the realism, but even just the thought of them... even cartoon spiders that don't even really look much like spiders make my skin crawl.

Giant spiders are a welcome sight for me!
Anything to add to the creepy factor! Though Giant Centipedes would be awesome for that too :D

A good friend of mine has this same problem. Though interestingly he can work through it if the spiders are tarantula style, big and fuzzy, but if they're black widow types, with giant abdomen and such, he just can't take it.

The more I think about it, the more apprehensive I am about fighting that huge spider. Depending on how good the animation is, that might be a new height for TES scaryness, arachnophobia or not!

If you see a spider in a dark dungeon and you're scared, then turn off the audio in Skyrim, put on radio or mp3 or something. Then perhaps increase the in-game brightness about 300% to make the dungeon less dark and scary?
Or deal with it and try to get over your fear? :)

Right, turn off the audio so that you can't hear it sneak up on you.

I woulda thought killing them would be theraputic for people with arachnaphobia.

Besides. I don't like zombies (I don't think I'd say I have a phobia exactly, but they freak me the hell out), but I enjoy killing them in games for exactly that reason.

Lol! Can you imagine the sound effects? I bet they're horrible - sod dragons, this could be the biggest, scariest challenge in Skyrim :P
